Waves like Queen 'We will rock you.'

Waves ”We will rock you.’ like Queen.

Mindful.

Some can handle the waves.

Notice some can handle these waves.

Aware, alert, focused and attentive all similar words but the word mindful fits what I am writing about. To be mindful of our thoughts and emotions and the effect they have on our wellbeing. We need to understanding how a sensory perception or a subliminal perception triggers a thought in our mind and gives rise to waves of emotion. with this understanding we pause before these waves break.

Stay safe ride the waves to the beach.

Stay safe ride the waves to the beach.

A thought has no power of its own, till the person experiencing that thought grants it the power. Discernment is needed before we act on a thought and the emotion it gave rise to. Mindful of these thoughts and emotions, pause and realize the feeling being experienced. Unmindful of strong emotional waves breaking in our mind, we are like a ship in heavy seas off a rocky shore. Aware of these emotions in our mind we have the power to steer clear of the hazards that can wreck our life.

These wawes can be handled.

These waves can be handled.

Aware that a wide range of thoughts and emotion can be prompted by our daily encounters. We are mindful of what is harmful and beneficial sensory input. What we surround ourselves with will reflect our thoughts, in a positive or negative way. Life today is full of distractions to be wary of, negative media reports and entertainment and unethical people create negative emotion. Such as impatience, anger, jealousy, hate, and other unhelpful emotional states to enter our mind. If mindful we pause and correct these negative thoughts. To be conscious of impatience and realize it is unproductive and if unmindful develops into anger. If anger is not controlled, like a fire it burns the one closest to it. Why do we upset ourselves in this way?

A fire out of control.

A fire out of control.

In heavy traffic impatience and anger often get out of control. Curtsy and consideration are The antidote. If someone lacks courtesy, anger is not the answer. Consideration is the answer. Perhaps the driver is under life threatening pressure, probably not, but to assume so is to lower our tension. Life is not always to our liking. We must be cooperative and obliging, going with life’s flow. Thoughts give rise to emotions, watchful of these thoughts and arising emotions gives us more control over events in our life.

Stopped by Bushfire.

Stopped by Bushfire.

Aware, alert and focused is not all, we need mindful as well. Aware and alert can avoid an accident but if we are not mindful of our thoughts and emotions we could react in a foolish way. By honking the horn in anger, alarming other drivers unnecessarily, or stick our arm out the window to make a rude gesture at the offending driver, thoughtless of passing vehicles. Unmindful we have lost our composure and our focus on what we are doing.  Letting the outside sensory perceptions run our mind unconsciously is to be out of control. Mindfulness is the first step in taking control of our life.

Meditation helps one understand how thoughts can disturb us. In breathing meditation when we are concentrating on the breath we should not be upset by invasive thoughts, this is how we learn to let thoughts come and go while staying focused on what we are doing. We become mindful of what is important to us in the now and, unflustered, can return to our practice. This is the way to become tranquil and undisturbed by the unimportant.

reflect on a peaceul mind.

Reflect on a peaceful mind.

Where do these invasive thoughts come from? If they are prompted by a noise directly experienced that is obvious. Some time they are a mystery. In our quiet secluded well-chosen meditation sanctuary, a gentle breeze touches us softly bringing the fragrance of frangipani. Concentrating on our breath we are only subliminally aware of the breeze and the scent but a thought from the past comes into our mind. We have a lifetime of memories waiting to be aroused. Mindful of pleasant or unpleasant thoughts we stay focused not distracted in this way we learn self-control.

The frangipani sent Pauline the thought in prompted.

The frangipani scent prompted the thought of Pauline.

Impatience, anger, hate and thoughts of revenge are not going to help anyone. Instead we can feel sorry for the drivers with problems. They will have  accidents hurting their self or someone else. Actions always have consequences and thoughts come before actions. Those wild, angry, hateful thoughts and actions will one day hatch into monsters that will bite the one who gave them birth. No need to be the judge and executioner that is a thankless task.  Kind and caring thoughts and actions will enhance our life. Meditate or sit quietly and think about being aware of emotional states as they arise in the mind.  Emotional states shape our life. To be mindful and have control of our emotions will bring peace into our life.

The cake a work of joy a pleasure to share.

The cake a work of joy a pleasure to share.

A piece of cake, so easy.

This Christmas tree was like a burning bush.

This Christmas tree was like a burning bush.

It is time to bake a Christmas cake to celebrate Jesus Christ’s birthday. I am pleased that it is not traditional to decorate it with candles, two thousand and fourteen candles would create a fire hazard. As I do not believe in the supernatural I would only put thirty or thirty-three, the date of his crucifixion, still that would be enough to create problems in blowing them out. That would be a minor feat for Jesus and divided by three, The Father the son and the Holy Ghost that is only eleven candles to extinguish.

Santas walking on water.

Santas walking on water.

I am going to respect tradition, no candles, only cake, compassion and kindness. This is what Jesus promoted, not putting on a big show to sell candles. Christmas is a good opportunity to share some of our cake with others. Luke 6:31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. This is true Christmas spirit, not the kind that is bottled and sold. Once the cork is pulled the dangerous intoxicating spirit escapes from the bottle and can turn Christmas into a time of grief. In other words don’t drink and drive or lose your senses and act stupid.

The presintation is inportant.

The presentation is important.

Jesus did not object to a slice of bread and glass of wine. To some Christian denominations this represents Jesus’ flesh and blood. I do not understand or see any value in many Christian observances, rites and rituals. But I do like and respect the sincere loving believers that do kindness where it is needed. I trust these people because they up hold the values Christ advocated. These are same principle other people of different beliefs practice.

The wise follow the star.

The wise follow the star.

Jesus was one role-model to emulate as a path to morality there are other paths to the same destination. Let us not squabble over who we are following. Try to see the good in people and do to them as you would like them to do to you. This quote in some form is in every religion. It is known as the Golden Rule, the rule of reciprocity. It features in Confucianism 551 – 479 BC, also in Hindu and Buddhism. All this is ancient history; let us not get too excited about who did this and who said that, that would spoil the joy of Christmas day.

To the four story heigh top.

To the four-story high top.

Do not get all fired up, hot and excited, that is probably why there are no candles on a Christmas cake. The candles may have been omitted to remind us not to turn this special birth day into a party but keep it a tasteful occasion to spread peace and kindness. To put behind us the petty upsets and use this as a time to show forgiveness. Christmas can be a time for all to show respect.A great opportunity to renew old friendships that have been neglected in the hustle and bustle of modern life. We have an excuse to send a card and get back in touch. Christmas can be a wonderful time for everyone.

You do not need to stress out worrying about buying expensive gifts as commerce encouraged us to do. Our loved ones just want our loving kindness. We cannot smile and be full of love if we are stressed about finance. That is why I am cooking a Christmas cake One of life’s joys is sharing a slice of cake with friends. I can afford a little more than just a cake and it will give me pleasure to do so. As Jesus would agree it is better to give than receive. Real joy is in giving kindness and love it is not measured in dollars.

A closer look.

A closer look.

I remember my childhood Christmases not the material gifts but those wonderful Christmas dinners. Sharing food cooked with love by my mother. The Christmas pudding had silver three penny pieces in it. We had to eat carefully and the whole family enjoyed sharing the fun. If I missed getting a coin, Mum would say “here have another small slice” and her magic ensured I got a coin. A trick my Dad played was to slip a half-crown, like fifty cents today, disregarding the effects of inflation, into his pudding and pretended to almost choke retrieving it. It did not fool anyone but did create a laugh still echoing today. I played this game with my sons and the laughter was worth more than the money.

Christmas is a pleasure to the eye.

Christmas is a pleasure to the eye.

As well as a cake I am going to cook a pudding and get some old silver coins and ply the old joke with my five grand children. Christmas lunch with the family and especially the young children is a special time for love to flourish. Those that cannot be there we visit when we can and keep them informed through modern technology. I am thankful for Christmas and what it means compassion and peace on earth.

A step in the right direction.

A step in the right direction.

Visit to Santa.

“What would you like for Christmas?”

“Bring me what Jesus wanted.”

“What was that?”

“Peace on Earth.”

“Be reasonable that is not what I am here for, there is no profit in peace.”

“It does not cost the Earth.”

“You are a problem child; ask for something expensive that will help the economy.”

“I would like good-will to everyone.”

“Look kid, stop being difficult, you must have seen something you want advertised on TV.”

“I have all I need; there are people in the world that need the necessities of life.”

“If you don’t want anything, why are you taking up my time?”

“Respect for my Grandfather he is going senile, like second childhood, he believes in Santa Clause, I  believe in God, Jesus and the holy spirit but not in Santa Clause.”

“You are not a child, but you are still not an adult.”

“Why not?”

“Because you still believe in myths, so don’t waste my time.”

St Maries Cathedral Sydney.

St Mary’s Cathedral Sydney.

I made up this story between a shopping complex Santa and a sincere Christian upholding the true values of Christmas. I do not believe any myths, the point of my story is we do not have to believe to have respect. Nor should we disregard the positive things found in other people’s beliefs. The peace and compassion Jesus taught is the same ethical values Jews and Muslims revere. Hindus and Buddhists also promote love and kindness. The conversation shows how the kindness of giving at Christmas has been over commercialized. Read carefully and you will note kindness does not cost the earth, but buying unnecessary luxuries does cost the environment. Giving to those in need will promote peace on earth and reduce hate.

We must grow up, in the past ignorance, fear, hatred and greed have caused conflict and wars. Calling other people’s beliefs myths is not nice, we have a right to our opinion but we must be reciprocal. If we cannot accept some ones opinion we should still respect their feelings. Wars have been caused because of dogmatic people who ironically disregard their own moral values and kill. Greedy people exploit the situation promoting distrust, fear and hate giving religion a bad name. Religion was invented to promote law and order and it has caused chaos.

Christmas is a holy day for Christians, for others it is just a holiday and is a wonderful concept if we are sensible and show respect. If we are foolish Christmas can be a disaster. Please be mindful of your action, balance your behavior. Too much Christmas spirit could be your undoing. Be thoughtful in your giving, it need not be expensive, it is the thought you put into picking an appropriate present that counts. We should remember it is not our birthday, so we should not expect gifts. The joy is in giving and the importance of a gift is to expect nothing in return, otherwise it is a deal, a transaction and business as usual.

Being respectful for others promotes goodwill, if we show respect we will be respected. We do not need to accept everything if it conflicts with our view. Still we can use what is beneficial wherever it is found and accept the gift graciously. Christmas is a holiday I look on as a Christian gift of kindness, opening our hearts to everyone. The best of the Christmas spirit should be practiced on everyone’s birthday. Then there would be peace on earth. Imagine how wonderful it would be if we emulated those admirable qualities attributed to Jesus.

There are things prevalent at Christmas not advantageous to our wellbeing but these negative practices are not only exhibited at Christmas. Over indulgence, wild extravagance and stupidity, no need to rave on, all these cravings are spoiling our wonderful world. In Australia whatever you hold as sacred virtues can be practiced at Christmas, as we are a multicultural country. The mistakes of the past are many, hopefully they can be laid to rest and as a democracy we can be tolerant, for regardless of one’s ideology we are all from the same source, we are one, we all bleed the same colour.

Twilight, between the night and sunrise.

Twilight, between the night and sunrise.

Ocean of Joy.

A sole surfes.

A sole surfer.

The earth orbits around the sun. The knight dresses in golden armor, refreshed after a vacation in the land of oblivion. Beta waves with amplitudes of varying frequency signal consciousness this is a better way to be, to feel, to think, and to act.

Oh what a beautiful morning.

Oh what a beautiful morning.

The big swell, light offshore wind, the surf is up. I am up and the conditions are ideal for being with nature. My bare feet touch the wet sand, I earth-out, bearing my board to face the challenging waves. The battle starts the turbulent white-water has to be overcome, to reach the trysting place, where the engagement takes place. This is the challenging moment where man and nature connect, to go with the flow,in the now. Wu wei, this is the breaking, or the making moment of ecstasy, living in the now, with the force of nature.

Early birds of a feather.

Early birds of a feather.

People fight life wanting, grasping, and hording not understanding all material things are impermanent and everything transient. Like the passing wave, we can only go, with the flow of nature. The time is now, the wave will not wait, life is now do not waste it. The most important thing is what you are doing now; the most important person is the one that is with you now. Travel light laiden down with pockets full of coins the surfer would drown. Some possessions we use, the ones we do not use are a burden needing protection and maintenance. To the needy and the greedy flaunting wealth causes envy, jealousy, and hate. Enjoying nature’s free gifts, sharing our gifts is in tune with nature way.

Just another day in Paradise.

Just another day in Paradise.

Beginning your day in the twilight you will catch the sun’s brilliant display. This is the photographers ‘Golden Hour’ at sunrise and the brief time of long shadows and warm glowing colour or sometimes misty affects, a challenge to capture and keep to share with others. Any activity that inspires you to rise early full of enthusiasm will enhance your life. I have always been an up with the birds sort of person. I enjoyed my work, there was no drudgery in doing what I liked, building dams, power stations, bridges, pipelines and roads. An occupation should be chosen that does service, rather than harm. That was my pleasure in getting my nourishment working not purely for money.

Self sculpture, Jack and hot little board.

Self sculpture, Jack and hot little board.

As a youth I got an adrenalin buzz riding the crane hook or feeding my ego up in the purlins. Today safety regulations have taken the excitement and the expertise out of rigging and construction work. A young man has to get his excitement from less practical activities. Does the way you ‘earn a crust’ bring you joy and satisfaction? Do you work for ‘big bickies’ to buy status symbols and luxuries beyond what you need? I am not averse to earning large sums of money as long as it is earned in an ethical way and spent on unselfish things.

A boy at heart.

A boy at heart.

At the end of the day what have we achieved, can we sleep with an untroubled mind? A joyous day full of good activity aids a restful night. Enjoy today in a pleasant way for it will pass. Leave no more than foot prints in your travels and take only pictures. Have respect for age, Mother Earth is extremely old. Some say about 5 billion years others only 6,ooo years, let us not get diverted, extremely old we can all agree on. We must be mindful of the beta wave frequency and amplitude.

Take a walk in natures garden hear her music the rustle of the leaves caressed by the gentle breeze aware of her breath of life. Breath in the life-giving air, exhale the negative waste. You can focus on your breath; you can count on this to calm an agitated mind. Your emotions becoming tranquil, you can now see the beauty everywhere. Conversely an angry person cannot taste the food in his mouth. This is meditation on the breath, concentrate on the breath of life and you will appreciate what a wondrous world we live in. this is to love life and all creation.

Not wasting time on fighting over who has found the truth. The truth is elusive and is also subject to change. The irony is the only thing that does not alter is the fact that ‘everything is subject to change.’ I will be generous and say to the waiter accept the change.

The words of Uncle sham.

What is for dinner?

What is for dinner?

Uncle Sam never lies; instead he invented a fertilizer and spread it all over the world garden and production flourished. USA, Us of A, us of Australia, have changed the English language, calling this type of fertilizer advertising. As in the conversation Humpty Dumpty had with Alice in. “Through the Looking Glass” by Lewis Carrolls. “When I say a word,” Humpty said in a rather scornful tone, “It means just what I choose it to mean – neither more nor less.” “The question is“said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many things.”

Pauline questions Humpty Dumpty.

Pauline questions Humpty Dumpty.

The slaughter–house was demolished and in its place the abattoir was established. The meat industry still was not happy with sales. Meat processing plant was the phrase adopted, cut short, with a sharp knife, to processing plant. Flesh covered in hair has no resemblance to meat wrapped in plastic. The rainforests in Brazil are becoming grass lands for vast cattle-stations. Livestock use up more than a quarter of the earth’s surface and contribute to polluting precious water systems.

What is for lunch.

What is for lunch.

Ronald McDonald decided to dress up as a clown and put play grounds in his fast food outlets. If we can get the kids in mum and dad will follow. Advertising invades almost every area of our garden. Our only escape is a date with Mother Nature, to meditate and gain control of our thoughts. How much fertilizer can be put on the garden before it destroys our source of nourishment, killing our garden paradise, banishing us once more from Eden? Too much of a good thing is growth without attention to sustainability. There is a difference between useful necessities and luxuries or useless trinkets. We horde and want too much and share too little.

How about that?

How about that?

TV is a habit, especially if you have been on the tread mill all day trying to keep up with the Joneses. Leaving no time to quietly meditate or think is this really a good way to live? The Joneses are not content with all their toys advertising keeps showing them a new and better version they must have. This is dynamic lifter (The trade name for chicken manure) and is being tipped in our lounge rooms via the TV. TV is the secret weapon for the effluent that is spread to the affluent. Politicians keep you in a job so you will keep them in a job. The buy-buy materialistic economy is unsustainable.

I don't want to be The Red Rooster.

I don’t want to be The Red Rooster.

Too exhausted to cook a wholesome meal, take the family to Ronald’s or to Colonel Saunders if you prefer eating dead chicken. There is no cleanup after, just dump all the superfluous packaging in the rubbish bin, if you can muster up the energy. Then home to sit back and watch TV commercials, interrupted by a frivolous show that some viewers value more than the ads. No need to think, the canned-laughter and applause from the studio audience will let you know how to react; they are shown sign boards so they know when to laugh. This is an example of the vicious tread mill where the rodents train for the rat race.

Scrap metal collector.

Scrap metal collector.

The endless growth of materialistic economics combined with the imbalanced distribution to regions where life’s needs are lacking, has caused the increase of global temperatures and hostility between people. Freedom-fighters, guerrilla armies or are they terrorists it depends on whose side you are on. Today let us not call a spade a spade that would be ruled out-of-order. Social justice must prevail. Spade and Sambo are derogatory terms for Afro-American.

Can Barak Obama clean up the mess or is he going to be blamed for the chaos left in the wake of the Bush administration.  Someone is always the fall guy. I would like to see Uncle Sambo out-wit the tiger as in the cartoon link. Those old cartoons full of racial slurs were considered harmless fun by white people. As a child I could not see how harmful and hurtful they were.

All car parts of a days work.

All car parts of a days work.

It is a war of words it takes our mind off the real issues. Words have become weapons of mass deception. Uncle Sam needs you to fight for truth and justice and the American way. Play it again Sam, you cannot have it both ways, it is either truth and justice or the American way. Ironically many Americans would agree, they have lost faith in their political system. Intent on promoting the American way in the world and neglecting the flood banks in New Orleans. Where mother Nature put on a little demonstration of her power.

Just a wave from Nature.

Just a wave from Nature.

Australia is indebted to America, in that it saved us from the Japanese invasion. Supplying us with armaments at a reasonable cost, then when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor they actually entered the war to save Australia. The war took a decided turn when Uncle Sam arrived with the cavalry. In typical Hollywood fashion they were heroes to the rescue, no vengeful motives. Japan was on her last legs when America dropped atomic bombs on two cities that ended the war days, perhaps weeks, quicker than it would have. I am not going to say it was wrong to drop those bombs or the methane bombs on Vietnam or any of the other conflicts Sam has entered into in the name of truth and justice. I do know the armaments industry is big business also the construction industry. Well-off nations are always ready to help rebuild demolished cities and they are conversely expert in demolishing them.

Think food for thought, food for all.

Think food for thought, food for all.

We are all involved in the biggest battle in history. Can America help in the fight Mother Nature has declared on the human race? I do not think we will win without the super powers contributing. The best thing we can do is surrender our materialistic way of life. Giving what is surplus to our needs to those who are ravenous for life’s necessities. Saying the words clean air, food and shelter, will not help one deprived of these necessities. You may give to charities but how much cream is skimmed off your milk of kindness.

All he needs to be happy.

All he needs to be happy.

A cliché is an overused phrase, but often true. Charity begins at home, another is if you want to change the world start with yourself. Try to live an exemplary life, I say try, as I try to follow the Buddha’s wise philosophy and I find it is very easy to step off the path he taught. With all my harsh criticism of Uncle Sam I am no doubt straying, hurting some people’s feelings. But it is the intention more than the action that governs the merit of an action. My intention is not to be hurtful they are ideas to assist people with good intentions, stop and think how can I best help the suffering in the world today. Without violently protesting or getting distressed. It is impossible to win a fight with Mother Nature, we must cooperate. Some of my ideas I hope may be a step on the path to understanding.

An old favourite.

No worries so simple.

Glass House Mountains.

Glass House Mountains.

We grow attached to things that are close to us. Not close like a pair of undies, not that kind of snuggly close. More the being together of a warm wooly jumper on a bleak winter day, the something or someone who shared the wins and the losses and kept you smiling when it was all up hill. Through the sun shine and storms, time takes its toll, the shine and sparkle diminishes but the fondness grows for the tried and true the familiar and reliable.

Softened by Nature.

Softened by Nature.

I am pleased with the fad that made faded, frayed and tattered jeans and other garments fashionable. Stressed furniture with artificial crackling and peeling paint showing the under layers became the in-thing. Now I can take pride in my old weathered and worn comfortable things that I find appealing, without feeling inferior to the upwardly mobile fashion conscious crowd. Not that it worries me what people think now that I have my ego subdued and under control.

Nature's art.

Nature’s art.

At twenty I worried about these things, at forty I lost interest in what they thought, at sixty I realized no one was even noticing me, at eighty I am pleased if people smile at the way I dress so I wear what is functional and comfortable.

Nature are is every where.

Nature’s art is everywhere.

Our friends will excuse our idiosyncrasies and we should not grieve over unjust criticism. Most of the things I worried about never happened. So is worrying a way to prevent misfortune happening?  I stopped worrying a long time ago and the answer is worrying does not help in any way.

Their passing is beautiful.

Their passing is beautiful.

I genuinely like things that Mother Nature has aged, mellowed and softened. Perhaps it is because it reminds us that all things are impermanent and wanting this to be otherwise can only bring sorrow.

Castles are gone the old dog remains.

Castles are gone the old dog remains.

The child builds castles of sand the tide comes in, the child cries, that is one of the first lessons nothing lasts. Childhood passes also, have we learned we cannot cling to impermanent things. The flower blooms, fades and dies, the brilliant sunset fades into the dark night.

Past Reflections.

Past Reflections.

Nature’s lessons teach us not to cling and hoard but to freely share. The truth may well be, though I am well past my use by date, I still feel useful and am pleased I have not been discarded as worthless. I live in the now, sharing the good before it passes into infinity.

A beautiful fraim of a picture.

A beautiful frame for a picture.

There needs to be balance as one can get too fond of old things. I worked with a bloke; he was built like a brick chicken coop, but gentle as washing up liquid. One day to attract his attention I pulled on his shirt and a button popped off under the strain. The passive, massive man turned on me like a wounded buffalo, eyes flashing like hazard lights on a road train. He took off his shirt and tossed it on the floor shouting “You have wrecked my shirt!” “Sorry mate, I did not mean to, it’s an old shirt.” I should not have said it was old. “I’ve had that shirt since I was an apprentice, I only wear it on special occasions now.” He raved on about the places he wore that shirt, wakes and weddings, sporting events and music festivals. It took a lot of diplomatic bull dung to calm him down. Actually I did not say a word. I let him call me names that indicated I was far from dexterous and my mother let her heart rule her head. I used this opportunity to practice my exercise on staying calm under pressure. The fire burned down the pot went off the boil, he turned and left.

Dramatic departure.

Dramatic departure.

Next day I saw him and gave him back his shirt washed, ironed and with a new golden button in place of the lost one. I explained how sorry I was and returned his repaired shirt. He smiled and said he regretted losing his temper over an old shirt. “No worries the new button can remind you nothing lasts forever.” I said. He put out his hand in a gesture of friendship. I shook his hand and the rest of me stopped shaking. I felt so relieved and happy, over the moon as they say. I felt like laughing, so jokingly said “You were lucky I did not lose my temper too or you would have been in trouble.”  “Yes, I would have been up on a man slaughter charge.” He replied. We both cracked up laughing. It is so simple just do the right thing and you have no worries.

Finding peace.

Kookaburras pay a visit.

kookaburra pay a visit.

The white dove, symbol of peace, will not land on a grasping hand. Everyone is chasing after the blue bird of happiness. Hunting the elusive blue bird of happiness, we realize if you succeed in capturing it you cannot imprisoned it. The happiness soon diminishes and dies and you are off on safari again. Happiness needs to be let free for everyone’s pleasure. There is not much rest for a person obsessed with desire always wanting pleasure and happiness. Pleasures are fleeting the only joy is in being free and sharing.

Corellas stand in for white doves

Corellas stand in for white doves

To have the pure white dove alight on your open hand is a truly worthwhile goal in life. The line between these metaphors and actual reality merges. An open hand like an open heart brings peace and contentment. Relaxed, calm and tranquil not wanting to possess offering a welcoming open helpful hand. I have found birds and most creatures sense danger and recognize kindness. With time and patience we can create peace around us. To quote Confucius “One step is the beginning of a thousand mile journey”. Opening our hand and our hearts brings us one step closer to a world of peace.

Blue Wren for happiness.

Blue Wren for happiness.

The blue bird sings for our happiness and we should recognize the power of a song. I am occasionally over taken by a negative frame of mind. To be mindful of our thoughts is the first step in the process of correcting unhelpful thoughts. The way to peace and contentment is to control unsavory thoughts that arise in our mind. For a quick short-term fix I use music. To cure the blues, I may get Fleetwood Mac to give Doctor Brown a call, he is that loving man if Doctor Brown doesn’t cure you, nobody can do you no good. With Credence Clearwater Revival and Jeremiah the bullfrog it is joy to the world all the boys and girls, joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea, joy to you and me.

A bird on the head is worth two in the bush.

A bird on the head is worth two in the bush.

I call some songs mood music depending on the mood I want to encourage. I may want recovery music if I am fatigued or get-up-and–go music if I am lethargic. I have music that inspires me. According to Doctor Brown with music you don’t need any prescriptions you don’t have to pay no bills. You can choose the music that presses your buttons, we all have different tastes. Music can temporarily alleviate minor upsets. For prolonged peace and contentment it takes meditation practice. This is the aim of meditation to calm and gain control of the mind. Thoughts can invade our minds arising from conscious sensory input and also subliminal causes. Thoughts precede actions repeated actions, become habits that form our character. Understanding basic things that govern our life are often overlooked in the frantic hunt for, the passing blue bird, the fleeting pleasure of possessing.

Love at first sight.

Love at first sight.

A long time ago a million years it seems. The best things in life were free. But no one appreciated a sky that was always blue. And no one congratulated a moon that was always new. So it was planned that they would vanish now and then. And we must pay before we get them back again. That’s what storms were made for and you should not be afraid for, that is the beginning of an old song that helps me appreciate what a wonderful world it is. Although it is not always as we would like it to be. But every time it rains it rains pennies from heaven. Since the days of pennies, it seems a million years now with the flood of inflation; it is now a deluge of dollars.

The sky is not always blue, not only because of rain clouds but because of carbon emissions into the atmosphere. The best things in life are becoming polluted. Air the number one free necessity in life, cleansing fresh free water and wholesome vegetables to sustain life are no longer free. Is it in natures plan or God’s plan that we must pay before we get them back again? Is that what the extreme weather is made for, should we be afraid for, this being the end to our carefree sing along?

I lend my friends a hand.

I lend my friends a hand.

There is a true blue bird of happiness. Life is sweet tender and complete when you find this blue bird of happiness. You will find perfect peace of mind when you find the blue bird of happiness. When he sings to you though you are deep in blue you will see a ray of light come shining through. Yes somewhere over the rainbow blue birds fly, so why can’t you and I.

Three of many Australian flags.

Three of many Australian flags.

Gods Own Country, Man owns nothing.

It is said first in best dressed.

It is said first in best dressed.

Dorothea Mackellar wrote the poem, My Country, while in England pining for Australia. I like this poem although I realize Australia is not my country. I do not own it I was only fortunate enough to be born here. Australia is my home no matter where I roam, I still call Australia home. We are one but we are many from all the lands on earth we come. This I really am in tune with. No one really owns anything it is all on loan. To quote, Shakespeare, All the world’s a stage and all men and women merely players on it. They have their entries and their exits. Realizing all things are passing and we are also impermanent we become less grasping and possessive.

Here's mud in your eye, Is a toast.

Here’s mud in your eye, Is a toast.

We are often blind to obvious facts. The indigenous people inhabited Australia when adventurous sea-farers claimed to have discovered a new land. Waving their flag they patriotically planted it in the earth declaring this land is ours. The hardy pioneer settlers followed clearing the land, fencing and bringing in their cattle. Polluting the aboriginal water holes and fencing their hunting grounds. My, brave adventurous pioneers, forefathers suffered the droughts and flooding rains. I admire their tenacity but in hindsight recognize their ignorance.

They called it home.

They called it home.

Jews, Christians and Muslims are still fighting over their promised lands. When will we learn possessing, hording and clinging will never bring peace? This is not in accordance with what their God advocates. I imagine all this could be blowin in the wind, if we stopped wanting, clinging and possessing. Took a deep breath of the free life-giving, air and meditated on what is truly ours to own. It is all impermanent, passing we can cling to nothing for very long.

A hard life no TV.

A hard life no TV.

It is not your country Dorothea, come back home to warmth and love. This world is home to the family of man our island home in the infinite cosmos. Everything in this world is interdependent sharing is necessity. Possessing is not a necessary requirement to enjoying something. The person that hoards riches invites crime and envy. Property comes with liabilities of storing, protecting and maintaining. When we give a kind word or a smile we see how it enhances our life. Then we can progress, giving more substantial aid to those in need.

Four horned off road transport.

Four horned off-road transport.

There is no room for pining if we are concerned in helping the less fortunate. We will not be blind to the obvious that we share this world and must consider others needs and different ways of life. Those flag waving patriotic overzealous empire builders, drew lines on maps cutting up countries and plundering the wealth, with no consideration of the original inhabitants. With disregard to others feelings they invaded lands, enforcing their language, religion and way of life on the natives. Much of the conflict in the world today is a legacy of those empire builders.

They all call Australia home.

They all call Australia home.

We need to stop being dogmatic in our beliefs and try to understand others beliefs. Misunderstanding and ignorance must be over come if we are to have peace on earth. There are no bad people they are sick or ignorant. Education is necessary to counter lack of knowledge and for people who are sick from lack of life’s necessities we need to share all we can. This is the only way to live in harmony with our fellow-man.

The reaction to force is opposing force. Wars create vengeance in the defeated and grief to the victorious as a war is never won without casualties. Man is a tear drop in an ocean of sorrow. Life is fleeting, and the sorrow is, it is too late when the bubble bursts to repentant. It is satisfying to give while you live and die in peace with no regrets. Our path through life is like a speeding bullet quickly reaching the target and the target is death. We own nothing we leave it all behind. Do not make waves as you sail through life. You cannot remain clean stirring up mud. To have no regrets leave clear water in your wake.

What is left at end of the day.

What is left at end of the day.

When waving the flag in god’s own country realise it is not yours.

This flag has a lot of history, written by the victors.

Lucky Jack.

The Captain and Cabin Boy.

The Captain and Cabin Boy.

I have often been called Happy Jack or Lucky Jack. I wonder is it because I am happy that I am lucky or am I lucky because I am happy and smile a lot? People ask, “Why are you always smiling?” “It is vanity the wrinkles are rearranged and I look better.” I joke. In fact I am advertising a good emotional state. People know I am friendly it is a win-win situation that promotes good.

Not this young, this is my grandson, but similar smile.

Not this young, this is my grandson, but similar smile.

I hitchhiked most of my way around the world in the sixties. I was young the world was mine; mankind was at the peak of extravagance, before thoughts of conservation, I had not realized there was a limit to the world’s resources. Success in thumbing a ride relies on your appearance, clean and tidy, not too big a bag and most important a smile. Choose an easy and safe place for your lift to pull-up and it is a good idea to display a sign showing where you going to.

Happy jack smiles run in the family.

When the lifts are scarce and the sky is clouding over it is easy to forget to smile and instead get a worried look on your face. The driver has to make a snap decision and cannot decide what the desperate grim look means so does not take the risk. I learned a smile is the same in any language it says “I am happy, at ease and friendly.” People are attracted and respond positively to a smile.

Smiles are like boomerangs they return.

Smiles are like boomerangs they return.

I feel sorry for people who look for sympathy airing their troubles with a dismal gloomy face. Many people burdening others with their hard luck stories. What they do not realize is they are keeping their troubles alive, magnifying them and turning friends away. I feel admiration and compassion for a person that smiles when plagued by misfortune.

Smiles are beautiful in any language.

Smiles are beautiful in any language.

The way to improve your chances, not only in getting a free ride, is a sincere smile. By caring, being helpful and being friendly your chances of making new friends increases and it starts with a smile. When you increase your circle of friends you increase your good fortune. The more friends you have the more chance you have of hearing about opportunities that can benefit you. It is called networking in business circles in religious groups it would be fellowship and in all walks of life it is commonsense. Smiling, being helpful and friendly promotes happiness and luck.

Smiles love and peace a bit of reggae.

An example, Pauline and I went to at a music venue we got there early. Sat at a table in a good position all available tables were soon taken. There were no empty tables but some unoccupied seats. Two seats were available at our table. Four people came in looking for a place. I smiled and said “There is room at this table you just need two more chairs.” After introductions we became friends, Terry belonged to a ukulele club and invited me along next time they met. I was looking for a ukulele club but none were advertised in the area. I went along and made more friends willing to pass on their knowledge. I am really lucky and the nicer I am to other people the luckier I get.

Be happy smile don't worry.

Be happy smile don’t worry.

The music was lively blues guitar; everyone was rocking or tapping their feet to the music. I let the music take me out on to the dance floor and did a solo uninhibited dance. I am not worried if people think I am a crazy old bloke or high on loco-weed. Musicians play better if they have an appreciative audience. I am the detonator that set others off dancing, it only takes one and others lose their self-consciousness. I do not need any stimulants other than the music, two beers is my limit. As for marijuana, one must be careful as it is sometimes mixed with other substances. You are pushing your luck if you try drugs to make you feel good. All that is needed is music a smile and good attitude.

Music, and loving smiles it is family trait.

Music, and loving smiles it is family trait.

Music is a good way to psyche you into a good mood. On a treadmill in a gym is a good cardiovascular exercise but dancing is also a great workout. I am no longer young and fit but I now realize the world is not mine to exploit. Simple pleasures are the best the higher you go the further you can fall. Sharing a meal with friends is one of the most enjoyable things you can do. Smile and be kind to others, if you are lucky the meal you share will not be your last.

Smiles make us one loving family.

A peck on the cheek.

A peck on the cheek.

Contentment.

All you need is love.

All you need is love.

Contentment is to have what you need and want no more. To want more than you need is greedy. A greedy person is never satisfied desiring. If that desire is satisfied the pleasure is fleeting, the happiness passes the wanting continues. A new desire becomes the goal thinking it will lead to happiness. A mirage like the end of the rainbow can never be reached.

Rainbows end.

Rainbows end.

Contentment is a balance like when Yin and Yang are in perfect balance, neither too much or too little. In time all things pass it is a fact of life all is impermanent. Understanding this reality brings equanimity. Wanting is no longer a driving force sharing becomes the priority. Sharing is the antidote to greed. Sharing creates friends and friends in turn share their surplus. So sharing ensures you against hunger, needing and wanting.

Picture of contentment, when the bull is themed.

Contentment is the balance between deprivation and excess. Without life-sustaining necessities all living things wither and die. The world is a garden of life caring for this world garden is our reason for existence. Not to appreciate and care for our garden we could starve ourselves out of existence. There is life-sustaining necessities we should be contented with. Greedily wanting taking more than we require will only bring sorrow. A fruitful way of life entails effort, an idle life focused on self brings discontentment.

This is the idea of contentment.

This is the idea of contentment

want for nothing is to be satisfied with enough. To know when you have enough is wisdom. Ignorance, always wanting, is the stupidity of the unenlightened. There is a way to find enlightenment a path to follow that leads to contentment and wisdom. It can be followed in conjunction with other ethical beliefs without any difficulty. These steps are a self-imposed set of rules that guide one to self-improvement. No one can walk this path for you. Others may point the way but self effort must be practiced in everyday living to bring peace and contentment.

Jogyesa Temole Seoul.

There are eight basic rules to follow on this path to ethical self-improvement and it is a lifelong journey. One must always be aware of the many pitfalls and diversions along the path. False trails are a part of life’s path. It is human to lose our way. No need to fret over misguided steps. Return to the true path that leads in the direction of peace and contentment. Contentment is the closest man can come to lasting happiness. Pleasures are fleeting; happiness is like snowflakes on the river, to quote Robbie Burns, Or like bubbles on the river, as in  Worlds on worlds are rolling ever.Shelly’s poem, contentment lives within you.

One needs to be aware of their thoughts, speech and actions, concentrating, mindful at all times, of their state of mind and attitude. This is not an easy formula to follow but the amount of effort will directly govern the benefits received. You may have a method you prefer to this. Though I have studied many other philosophies, beliefs and paths and found helpful ideas. I have found this a clear blueprint outlining the steps to follow that, has enhanced the quality of my life, with peace, satisfaction and contentment.

Somewhere over the rainbow.

Somewhere over the rainbow.

Flowers bring colure to our life birds bring a song. By sharing our gifts we cannot go wrong.

I would like to share this philosophy. Caring and sharing is philanthropy.

Giving brings joy it is a win-win situation. Sharing good fortune is a pleasant sensation.

Wanting, cling and hoarding too is not the decent thing to do.

Be contented with enough, give to those doing it tough.

Bring contentment free from strife. With loving thoughts fill your life.

The birds defy gravity singing for you and me.

Give your gifts as freely as a birds and you will fly these are my words.

Rainbows end.
