Beliefs Matter.

I am reading a book from the library I looked up the author Eldon Taylor on Google. I often do that to see what their qualifications are. Eldon Taylor had an impressive list of qualifications that made me want to read his book called “I Believe.”

Books to learn about all beliefs.

Books to learn about all beliefs.

The book is sprinkled with quotes, one from Francis Bacon is fitting, ” It is not what we eat but what we digest that makes us strong; not what we gain but what we save that makes us rich; it is not what we read but what we remember that makes us learn; and not what we profess but what we practice that gives us integrity.

I like this quote.

I like this quote.

Integrity and a whole list of other words are suggested in the book as admirable qualities worth acquiring. The book has thought provoking ideas. His religious philosophy was not clear till I read further.

Different but worth quoting.

Different but worth quoting.

He gives examples of how parents promise their children things, then do not keep their promise if the child is naughty. He goes on to explain, when he makes a promise to his son he always stresses that the promise is subject to his son being good. This clause was understood to be part of all the promises made to his son.

One of many religions.

One of many beleifs.

This made me think, religion requires us to make promises we often cannot keep. We break them when we believe our partner has been naughty or not lived up to our expectations. The biggest percentages of marriages, these days, end in separations and divorce. This brings our attention to not making promises lightly.

Relaxing reading or just relaxed.

I learned a lot from this book to really appreciate it, there were things mentioned I needed to look up on the iPad. I no longer hurry through books, greatly devouring the contents. I savour them like a meal; they do me more good that way. The journey is important, because of what we learn, by the ‘way’.

By the way I like Chinese art.

The way to the top of the mountain, Chinese art.

After reading this book my thoughts were of the ‘Way’ or the ‘Path’. To quote Lao Tzu “The Tao that can be described is not the real Tao.”

Heading in the right direction.

Heading in the right direction.

What is our purpose in life? Is it to do our best to improve towards enlightenment? There are many paths to the summit of the mountain. We cannot be sure we are on the right path till we get there.

They are contented they are there,

My foot in on a wonderful world.

My foot in on a wonderful world.

Tolerance and respect..

On Newtons recommendation I am off to see the sea.

I am not as clever as some may think so writing my blog is a challenge. Everything I write has been picked up from other people. Throughout my working career I took notice of those with the knowhow. Also I learned the value of nonfiction books. In recreational activities every skill that would help me in what I was trying to achieve, I would swat up on. No one can claim to be a self-made man.

As Sir Isaac Newton in 1679 is quoted as saying in a letter to Robert Hooke, “If I have seen further than others it was by standing on the shoulders of giants.” A similar observation was made earlier in 1159 by John of Salisbury in a book, written in Latin translated as. “We are like dwarfs sitting on the shoulders of giants.”

I am so fortunate.

I am so fortunate.

So we have a lot to thank those that showed us the way. Lau Tzu showed me one Way, Buddha showed me another Path. My belief is, whatever religious differences we have, we must practice tolerance and respect for others beliefs. Even if we cannot accept it all, there will be a lot we can agree on.

All major religions preach loving kindness, morality and generosity. If we have faith in a God we should show our faith by keeping his commandments and not take over the divine reins of life and death. If you have faith and trust there is no need to take over this responsibility. Let your God do the driving, you have not got a licence to kill. This would be the right way to promote your religion.

Writing my blog required me to revise my ideas and rethink everything. This gave me a clearer understanding in my own mind. Owing to practically no schooling the English language was another learning curve. A blog is a lot more difficult than a job report. Even then I always had a dictionary on hand.

There is an incident that demonstrates this. At a meeting one of the engineers criticised my spelling. I immediately replied “I will scribble my report in future then the spelling will be less of a problem.” His writing was as difficult to decipher as a doctor’s prescription.

My blog helps me improve in more ways than one. Everything I decide to do is a benefit to me. If reading my blog inspires others to follow what I have found beneficial, that is a bonus.

On rush if it rains before I get home, it is not cold.

No rush if it rains before I get home, it is not cold.

That prompts another quote, from Little John Salisbury.”One who comprehends truth is wise. One who loves truth is good. One who orders his life by truth is happy”.

Selfies are in fashion.

Selfies are in fashion.

Buddhism reminds us of a universal truth “Everything is subject to change.” Aware of that truth will help you improve your happiness. As you will accept change and not cling to passing things.

A gift from our garden, a Walking Iris grows easy from a cutting.

There is a lot I still have to pick up, while wandering along the vast ocean seashore. That is a more enjoyable pass-time than blogging. The sun is shining the surf is rolling in I am on my bike to enjoy these gifts of nature , have a nice day see you later.

Defining Love.

Nan Tien Temple statues, Photos and buddhist sayings added by Jack.

Nan Tien Temple statues, Photos and Buddhist sayings added by Jack.

What precisely is love? As a parent it is to cherish, hold dear and protect. As a child it is attachment and need that grows into feelings of affection. Then feelings of longing for and desiring things begins, children know how to love without reservation. Some never grow out of these wanting ways. Their love matures into innocent romantic love, maturing into deep emotions of sexual attraction and intense desire. These feelings are reptilian impulses that need conscious thought to control them. Without mutual understanding and caring fondness it is not love, but lust. Lasting love endures with trust, unselfishly caring and sharing all life’s experiences, the joys and sorrows, helping in every way to promote a priceless friendship.

I love this saying.

I love this saying.

As time passes it is a universal truth that all things change, love is no exception. Like all things without care and attention love will fade and die. Lovelorn and lonely, like in tennis a score of zero is love; you lose because you did not put enough into the game. All games have rules. In the game of love the rules are warmth and kind attention at all times for love to grow and flourish. If you want love you must be a loving person, if you want respect you must be respectable. It is true ‘as you sow so you reap.’ it has been said in many ways by many renowned sages. It is the basic idea of karma in life, your deeds, both good and bad, will automatically rebound in a like manner.

Two joys songs and birds.

Two joys songs and birds.

Love can be described as a great fondness, this could have inherent problems.  We want or desire what we are fond of so, as I mentioned, desires need to be controlled. That romantic puppy love, the embracing, cuddling kissing can lead to problems for the young uninformed. They are not bad; they are ignorant of the gravity and all the ramifications they are in need of understanding. Wanting is not only a problem with sexual desires, many cravings need controlling. All things in excess are harmful. Moderation and balance are needed. To love food and eat in excess of the body’s needs brings health problems. Balance the calories eaten to the calories burning in exercise done.  Wanting more than we need is greed. Ironically love is linked to wanting and greed. Actually it is excessive wanting and greed that brings bad karma.

No judging or adding too.

No judging or adding too.

These are down to earth thoughts on love. I will leave the worship, adoration and devotional love to the believers in a benevolent God to explain. I love the world the way it is. I do not love the way our wanting is changing the world faster than nature intended. Love has both wondrous aspects and adverse features. The word love is stretched beyond its limits we need to qualify all the different forms of love. Then use mindfulness, moderation, balance and understand all the aspects of love. Love is intrinsic to our human needs, we need love to exist. We need to consider love in all our dealings. Most of all we need to understand love, if not we will be deeply hurt. If hurt by love it will be because of lack of understand.

Reflect on this.

Reflect on this.

Love is freedom, needing and possessing is not love this is pain and suffering. Love is being sensitive to all we encounter in life. Life is a love song to enjoy without wanting, clinging or attachment. Let the music play and enjoy the entire performance not only your favorite guitar rift. Nature gives her free gifts out of love for all that appreciate. Nature makes no judgments on who deserves, people either appreciate and enjoy or ignore and miss natures example of love. The sun shines warmth on all of life without favor as the rain falls on both the needy parched earth and the ocean. When one picks up a broken bottle off the beach, it is not known who may be saved from pain. There is no reward other than the joy of knowing someone may benefit. This is a simple act of human love.
