It is all out there.

It is all out there.

Give me a Wave.

Go for it.

Go for it.

To navigate through the World Wide Web, is called ‘surfing the web’ or spending time on the Internet. Cyberspace is like a vast ocean. So surfing the net is an appropriate metaphor. Surfing the ocean waves is physically good for you and surfing the Webb is a good mental exercise. Surfing the web is mentally surfing invisible waves.

Go for it in the library on the computer or real ocean waves.

To learn I read mostly nonfiction. Educational, do it yourself type books I struggled with what I called ‘heavy books’ they were like trying to read a foreign language. I found a dictionary helpful but the going was a tedious slog.

We start small.

We start small.

One of my favourite subjects is happiness.

Have some fun and grow.

Have some fun and grow.

Every book I saw pertaining to happiness I would read, this took me into the motivational and psychology shelves of the library.

going for it.

going for it.

Because I had travelled in Thailand and seen the effect Buddhism had on Thai people. They are educated in Buddhism and are honest, friendly, happy people. That got me interested in South Eastern Asian philosophy. Then I branched into Greek philosophy. I had made an assumption about Greek philosophy because of their mythical supernatural gods and I had seen the fresco by Raphael of the ‘School of Athens’ when visiting the Vatican. This gave me a wrong idea seeing the Greek philosophers displayed in the Papal Palace where the Pope lives. Here is a link that is worth visiting if you are into art or philosophy or have an inquiring mind. https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/renaissance-reformation/high-ren-florence-rome/high-renaissance1/v/raphael-school-of-athens

getting into it.

getting into it.

One of the best happiness books was The Happiness Hypothesis, By Jonathan Haidt.

 To make you smile.

To make you smile.

Hypothesis I did not know what kind of herbal concoction it was, whether you smoked it or injected ¬†it. ūüėú Yes I was ignorant and when I surf the net I realise I am still not smart.

The monkey mind up to mischief.

The monkey mind up to mischief.

Since then I have learned a few things, I discovered Greek philosophers.

A great big wonderful world.

A great big wonderful world. Oakura NZ.

Their ideas, in most cases different to what I had assumed. Epicurus had a lot in common with Siddhartha Gautama, the original Buddha.

They are going for it every where there waves. Burleigh Qld.

They are going for it wherever there are waves. Burleigh Qld.

Now I Google a word I am unfamiliar with or can’t even pronounce, often one word leads to another and I get carried away on a wave, one link leading to another. Then I am really surfing, I come back to the book later.

This is it.

This is it.

Like surfing the ocean waves you are in the now, going with the flow. No paddling out through the white waves it is too easy, a pleasure for old surfers.

Don't worry about the horizon just enjoy the surfing.

My son Jason 1982, don’t worry about the horizon just enjoy surfing.

Weeding the Garden.

Pauline at work.

Pauline at work.

Every problem is an opportunity for growth. Life is a problem if we think what is taught in the school room is all we need to know. Learning should extend beyond the classroom. We must think for our self and look for facts to substantiate what we are told. We need more than blind faith in others.

Jack plaing in the garden.

Jack playing in the garden.

Weeds grow and flourish with no assistance from the gardener. In the garden of our mind weeds can thrive if we are not aware and constantly weeding out the unwanted negative thoughts.

Zen Garden ,note the tree shadow on the rock.

Zen Garden ,note the tree shadow on the rock.

Plant instead seeds of love, hope, peace and contentment. They will grow and produce medicine that will cure hate and despair and calming the stress in our life. Grow strong by planting good wholesome seeds.

Focus your mind on good and feed good thoughts into your mind as everything you experience influences your mind either positively or negatively.

Distance yourself from the toxic poison, that is too plentiful, in the modern world.

Weeds are always trying to invade.

Weeds are always trying to invade.

In technical terms all the sensory perception you come in contact with affect the neural activity in your brain. Repeated experiences leave lasting changes in the brain. You could say repeated thoughts and actions form habits that can be beneficial or detrimental, depending on what you come in contact with.

Zigzagging bright contrast.

Zigzagging bright contrast.

To find happiness, peace and contentment you need to plant good seeds in the garden of your mind and repeatedly weed out weeds that are overrunning and destroying your beautiful, peaceful garden.

A feast for the eyes.

A feast for the eyes.

The underlying cause of all life’s wonders and woes, man has created or destroyed, all the joy or pain can be traced to what man has planted in his brain, the garden of his mind.

A joy to behold.

A joy to behold.

Over centuries of history man has planted mostly weeds in the garden of his mind. The seeds of ignorance, fear, greed and hate flourished. Ignorance created gods, fear created submission to shaman, witch doctors and priests that claimed they could communicate with a god or the gods. Greed, hate and ignorance flourished under these conditions till the renaissance.

A star for perfection.

A star for perfection.

These mistakes must be put behind us. We should think for ourselves not blindly believing comments from witch doctors, spin doctors, or media rubbish.

Nourishment from the garden.

Nourishment from the garden.

A point I made in my post ‘Elvis Lives’ shows one way to calculate the truth. Occam’s Razor is another problem solving principal that can be explained this way, ‘assume that the most straight forward or simplest explanation is the most likely to be the truth.’ I believe looking at people’s past history and their motives for making a statement helps make a correct decision on the value of their words.

The love of a garden...

The love of a garden…

Try to avoid most of the unsavoury, think and act positive. One suggestion is watch the news but not every time the same dreadful news is repeated. My wish is by keeping actively weeding you garden you harvest an abundance of nutrious vegetables, fruit and the flowers bloom in splendour.

is a garden of love.

Am I a Buddhist?

Pauline in action.

Pauline’s post about Watt Buddharangsee, meaning Move or Change Places Temple, prompted me to think,¬†All schools of Buddhism have the basic logical (Dharma) teachings of The Buddha. The Four Noble Truths and The Eightfold Path.

This photo shows the wheel with eight spokes.

This shrine shows the wheel with eight spokes.

The countries of South East Asia that have adopted Buddhism have incorporated their own cultures and customs in it. This resulted in many different varieties of Buddhism.

Still the fundamental teachings are the same. To abstain from all kinds of evil, promote all that is beneficial and purify the mind.

Stupa out side.

To understand all things are impermanent and subject to change, abstain from all kinds of evil and personally develop ethical behaviour, as outlined in the Buddha’s basic teaching. Consequently there have been no major conflicts between different Buddhist religious¬†groups.

Pauline put this photo in her post.

The three major Abrahamic religions conversely are in aggressive conflict for domination. Regardless of the fact that their God, the one they claim to be almighty, condemns killing.

Why is this abandoned little church?

Why is this little church abandoned?

Perhaps Lau Tzu had it right when he said “The Tao that can be named is not the true Tao.” (The Tao is the inexplicable force that keeps the whole cosmos in equilibrium.) Another aspect of Taoism is yin and yang, when yin and yang are in balance it is believed to be perfect harmony. This is described as Wu Wei meaning¬†in flow with nature.

The trees were an ideal setting for the Stupa.

I am not a Taoist, Buddhist, Hindu and defiantly not one of the many factions of the Abrahamic dogmas, Jews, Christians or Muslims with their multitude of denomination all arguing for dominance.

The trees looked good from all angles.

I believe they all have the same good basic ethics but much of the good is lost in the belief in the supernatural, other myths and wishful thinking.

Book Inn..

Book Inn..

Slow down don’t slow up.

Lately I have been absorbed reading instead of writing. The books I have been reading have made me realise how little I know. And yet I am far more knowledgeable than I used to be, at least I now know how to enjoy life.

What else is it for?

What else is it for?

Knowing the unsatisfactory changing nature of life. I do not cling to things and am contented rather than happy. My lifelong goal is self improvement, acquiring knowledge rather than possessions.

I gave my copy away I went to the library revise.

I went to the library to read it again I gave my copy away.

I would describe this as contentment rather than happiness. Learning to appreciation the good in my life.

 To make you smile.

To make you smile.

Ignorance is the cause of unhappiness. To enjoy life one must be disciplined in doing what is necessary to stay healthy in both body and mind. The one thing we should not be ignorant of is nothing lasts. Everything has a use by date.

You may not buy this one it is a gift.

You may not buy this one it is a gift, complements of Buddhist society Malaysia.

We can prolong the life of things by maintaining them properly, then they will serve us well. To care for things we need the knowledge to know how. Over the years I have learned a few life skills.

It is no secret any more.

It is no secret any more.

I try to pass them on, but you can find better qualified writers than me. You just need to be very selective in sorting out whose opinion to follow. Is it fact or fiction, is it rubbish I am feeding my mind on? Both body and mind need wholesome nourishment to stay healthy.

I am pleased how I am doing, keeping fit and inspiring others. They made me ‘member of the month’ at the¬†Burleigh, World Gym. I was requested to write this comment. I now am fitted out in really smart gym cloths all part of the honour.

The matador, no bull.

The matador, no bull.

“Who is the old bloke sweating on the x trainer?”world gym

“That is Jack he used to be a construction worker, a rigger to be precise.”

Great game for a young bloke to earn a crust. Plenty of exercise climbing up on the steel purlins, riding the crane hook. Man those were the days before the safety regulations took all the buzz out of it.

The problem is if you do a good job they promote you. Most of the fun goes out of it and it can get stressful.

Tim wants to be like me, when he has been 83 years at the gym.

Tim wants to be like me, when he has been 83 years at the gym.

The way around that is go to a gym and get rid of the stress. Get the endorphin circulating, it is better than chocolate. Oh! You see eye candy everywhere in a gym, a treat for every taste, the blokes and the girls. The great people that you become friends with in a gym like World Gym, Burleigh, is another incentive to workout.

Note the caption on the wall.

I am 83 but when I am mixing in with all these positive, fit people I can forget I am past my use by date. Three score and ten I never put too much faith in ancient writing and doctors are ok in an emergency but do not leave it up to them to keep you fit. You are better of at the gym.

A few windows at Surfers Paradise.

A few windows at Surfers Paradise.

I am an insignificant speck of dust on one of the many windows of this world. A world that is only a dust mite, orbiting in a ray of sunlight, compared to our galaxy of billions of stars. I am a short sounding noise made to attract attention, only a beep in cosmic time.

Droplets of moisture show up the suns rays the same as dost mites.

Droplets of moisture show up the suns rays the same as do dust mites.

Not realising our place in the big picture. We want to be the star attraction, taking a major role on the stage of life. We are taught our lines and how to play our part. This education fits us for our part in life’s socioeconomic drama.

Some never learn.

Some never learn.

Education teaches us what to think, not how to think. Learning from experience, gives us more than telling the time by the clock on the wall, the sun is a clock and compass. It can give us direction and tell us when to rise and retire. The sun shows the way to see the big picture in all its natural warmth and wonder.

Pandanus silhouette.

Why not enjoy this wondrous world. There is no need to buy a chronometer to get synchronised to compete in the nine to five race of the humans or measure the fleeting moments left in our life.

What are you hurrying to, is the destination paradise? If that is what you have been indoctrinated to believe. It may comfort you to think you can depart this world, with its greed, hate and religious arguments, to an existence of eternal boredom. As they say, “ignorance is bliss.”

Montage of Religions.

When religion was invented no one was aware of the electromagnetic spectrum, which includes, in order of increasing frequency and decreasing wavelength: radio waves, microwaves, inferred radiation, visible light, ultraviolet radiation, x-ray and gamma rays. Yet they say “I’ve seen the light.” These kind people that have ‚Äúseen the light‚ÄĚ may want to share this light with you. These evangelists are good people not evil they are doing what they think right. Like people water sometimes gets polluted but if the impurities are removed the water is pure. Trouble starts when others try to remove, what they¬†think are impurities in people of a different belief or put out their ‘lights.”

Physics is the general analysis of nature, conducted to understand how the universe works. Philosophy comes from the Greek word, (Philia) meaning “to love” or “befriend” and (Sophia) meaning “wisdom”. Socrates used the word philosophy to mean a search for wisdom. It has a much wider meaning today. It now includes the theory of everything and has specialised branches. As no one can know it all, except a “know all”.

Who is responsible for this Native Australian Hibiscus.

Who is responsible for this Native Australian Hibiscus.

There is only one “know all” and we have been arguing on who that “know all” is through our history.

Ocean water after desalination is pure fresh, sweet water.

Ocean water after desalination is pure fresh, sweet water.

Who’s argument are we going to accept. Science has given us all the technology we have today. People in their ignorance often abuse the technology, do not condemn science for that. Religion has given us nothing but arguments. A believer, in a religion is not evil, it is their dogmatic beliefs that create evil. Ocean water is drinkable if the salt is removed.

What a wonderful world.

What a wonderful world.

When we talk of God first we must define which God. Discussing religion, find out what religion and what branch, school or denomination. There are so many it is no wonder they argue among themselves.

Who's side was God on?

Who’s side was God on?

Jews, Christians and Muslims, have the same God but they fight. Even with in their own many breakaway groups they fight.

“May the sun shine, all day long, everything go right, nothing wrong.

May those you love bring love back to you, and may all the wishes you wish come true.”

Split by two Christian denominations the Irish are a disgrace killing each other, though their god commands, “Thou shall not kill.”

Thought you would like to see a contented man.

Thought you would like to see a contented man.

What would I know, I would wait to be attacked, then run away, rather than fight. Fighting would be my last resource. Most animals only fight if they are attacked, or their home invaded and kill for food to survive. I have faith that people are not borne sinful or bad. They become corrupted by greed and hate. I feel safe in believing people are like any other animal. Give them respect.

Wake up call.

Wisdom mixed with folklore.

Wisdom mixed with folklore.

The wisdom of the sages
has been passed down through the ages.
Still we do not know,
Love is the way to go.

Rainbows must have been a real puzzle.

Rainbows must have been a real puzzle.

Man could not explain,
the sunshine and the rain.
Only Gods could know,
so they were made to show.

I would rather marching girls.

I would rather marching girls.

The perplexing mystery of all creation,
Was solved by gods from every nation.
Then the arguments began,
who had the correct plan.

Is this the right foot.

Is this the right foot.

To keep control it would seem,
One God must be made supreme.
His foot prints in the sands of time,
still appear to many as sublime.

An awesome example of nature.

An awesome example of nature.

Mother Nature still exists,
though patriarchal Gods persist.
The puzzle still remains today,
Can science now show the way?

A digital camera, computer and Photoshop technology.

A digital camera, computer and Photoshop technology.

Or will technology be used to fight,
to see who’s God is in the right.
All the good we have today
Could just be thrown away.

Do not waste the free gifts of Mother Nature.

Do not waste the free gifts of Mother Nature.

Appreciation, love and trust,
in today’s world is a must.
Ignorance, greed, fear and hate,
Mother Nature will not tolerate.

You can copy my photo, the real thing cannot be replaced.

You can copy my photo, the real thing cannot be replaced.

Mother Nature is eternally sublime.
Man is mortal and will pass on in time.
A grain of sand or the starry sky,
it will not matter as time passes by.

How many grains of sand or stars in the sky.

How many grains of sand or stars in the sky.

All the blood sweat and tears,
all our stupid arguments and fears.
Why waste our time on pie in the sky?
When it is only a few years before we die.

Another example of Mother Natures, sun rise, sun set are constant reminders.

Another example of Mother Natures, sun rise, sun set are constant reminders.

Do not cry, we never die, we only change.
Atoms do not perish they only rearrange.
We may turn into dust mites floating on the morning breeze,
or into song birds singing in the tall green trees.

In a tree or warbling on my windowsill.

Caring and sharing in peace and calm.

Ever changing.

Ever changing.

Passing not clinging.

Ripples.

Ripples.

Change is a law of nature. Everything changes with time. Everything alters in some way; impermanence is the nature of things. Realising nothing is permanent everything is passing, in a state of transition. Understanding this is the beginning of enlightenment. The Buddhist calls true enlightenment nirvana, a stillness of mind free of desire, aversion and delusion. The main cause of suffering is desire to possess something that is not permanent in its intrinsic nature. Realising this fact frees one from the burden of attachment.

This link to The Enthusiastic Buddhist explains further.

Demonstration of walking on water.

Demonstration of walking on water.

Everything is passing change is the very nature of life, grasping and clinging to things is the cause of much of our suffering. Fresh, new, pristine, is the fleeting pleasure that cannot be maintained, weathering, damage and disappointment follow. Everything changes, ages, dies and decays; this is nature’s interconnected cycle. Man is no exception, the fact we are all part of this cosmic soup. Interconnected with all in life we are part of the whole and at one with life. Knowing this we stop being small minded realising we are an infinitesimal part of the whole environment.

Flowers changing to fruit.

Flowers changing to fruit.

Impermanence does not diminish our enjoyment of life, it enhances it.  We appreciate the present experience, enjoying the now. The fleeting present now is not wasted regretting the past or hurrying to an unknown future.  Being aware of these facts and accepting them as part of life makes one realise the futility of grasping and clinging. We become more caring and sharing and the real good news is that hard-times change too.

Like new and the old.

Like new and the old.

One thing we are reluctant to apply the fact of impermanence to, is our own life. We want to be an exception to the natural law because we are attached to this form of existence. Attached to people and things we love. All the things we falsely think of as ‚Äėmine‚Äô, in reality we own nothing. All will slip through our fingers like the sand in an hourglass, consumed by time. Me, my and mine are an illusion so deeply ingrained in our mind we have invented myths and blindly ignore the truth of impermanence.

It is more fun not clinging.

It is more fun not clinging.

Why are people that believe in life after death still afraid to take a chance and explore life? Clinging to life inhibits people from experiencing many joys in life. Caution is wise but fear is one of life’s poisons.  Do not be afraid, most people are honest, kind and helpful, if trusted and respected. Like wild creatures, if not threatened, they will not harm you. Most feared things are no more dangerous than a picnic lunch.

Used well and well used.

Used well and well used.

Being aware and understanding calms our fears.  Being aware of how our own emotions and actions effect a situation. Understanding grasping and clinging is foolish, caring and sharing is wise, a win win situation.  Change is inevitable all we can do is change our ways to fit in with nature’s law of change. Change our attitude if necessary as what we give is what we get. So give life your best and life will be reciprocal.

Every day appreciate the passing beauty.

Every day appreciate the passing beauty.
