Clifford’s Credo is easy to understand but not many people apply it in life. Quote, “It is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence.” In other words all beliefs should be based on logic and reason. William Kingdon Clifford also coined the phrase “Mind stuff” the simple elements of which consciousness is composed. Also the phrase “Tribal Self” relating to upholding the tribe’s welfare and this gives the tribe an advantage, these principles promote the groups survival. Natural selection will in the long run preserve those tribes. The “survival of the fittest” when discussing Darwin’s theory is of then quoted and the advantages in cooperation and altruistic behavior are disregarded.

Hamilton’s rule is actually a formula that specifies the conditions under which reproductive altruism evolves; r x B > C. This states that aid-giving behavior can evolve when the indirect benefits of helping relatives compensate the aid giver for any personal loss in reproduction incurred by helping. In 2010 experiments carried out supported this theory. altruistic behavior is often seen in birds I have seen birds act as if injured to lead me away from their nest. A lone Sulphur Crested Cockatoo can be seen high in a tree ready to give warning to the flock having a picnic on the farmer’s crop. Without getting into abstract mathematics if we are observant we can see examples of altruistic actions in all species.

Pascal’s Wager is a bit like having your cake and eating it too. It proposes that humans bet with their lives on the existence or non-existence of God and the sensible thing is to believe in God as there is little to lose if wrong, but the non believer pays a hell of a price if he is mistaken. Blaise Pascle was also a mathematician and obviously a calculating one. He was no doubt referring to the Christian God; Pascle lived 1623 to 1662 about the time of the Thirty Year War, initially between the Protestant and Catholic states battling it out. The Inquisition, arguments and many bloody wars are the result of disputes over this God.

Nature vast and beautiful. W.A.

There are three religions that believe in this same God, but cannot agree on the details. Judaism has the Hebrew Bible; Christians have an added New Testament with Jesus playing the lead role. Islam’s sacred book is the Quran. I have heard it being recited, it sounds beautiful, but I could not understand a word of it. Except I do know Allah is the Muslim name for God and Muhammad is their prophet. When these three religions get their act together and can agree and live in peace. I may consider Pascal’s Wager till then I will abide with Clifford’s Credo and except Hamilton’s Rule.

There are many other philosophical hypotheses, to pursue and consider. The Daia Theory that organisms interact with their inorganic surroundings on Earth to form a self-regulating, complex system that contributes to maintaining the conditions for life on the Earth. This theory was developed in the nineteen seventies by microbiologists. The name Gaia was coined by James Lovelock or Lynn Margulis, who developed this idea. The London Geographical Society in 2006 awarded Lovelock a medal for his work in Earth systems science and geology.

Gaia was the goddess of earth in ancient Greek religion. We now say Greek mythology and some say all gods are mythical beings as they do not comply with Clifford’s Credo. Many people will not listen to educated people who have studied paleontology, geology, mathematics and science.

Santa Claus will be delivering toys to the well-behaved children this year. Adults know the truth about Santa this will not affect their conduct. They no longer need threats and promise to behave in an ethical way. The mentally ill need understanding and the ignorant need education ancient myths have been tested over a long time and clearly do not work.

Scientific minds have brought about all the modern technology that has made our life easier. Consider science as a savior, science has not caused the problems we face in the world today. They are caused by ignorance, greed and hate, wake up, war is our ignorance fueled by arrogance, hate and greed. War is our greatest environmental hazard, empathy is the antidote.  By empathy I mean the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Do not blame others, science or gods, the buck stops with you, in the sense of you as the demanding ego.

What a wondrous world science has given us to explore. Do not neglect this wonderful opportunity to learn. Why does man invariably abuse the incredible gifts from both nature and science? The answer to this billion dollar question is ignorance, ego, greed and hate. Education and empathy are the best weapons in life’s battle to survive.

Fear Courage Balance.

Praying mantis hitches a ride.

  Praying mantis hitches a ride.

Fear is a necessary emotion to protect us from danger. Courage allows us to overcome fear. Balance is the skill needed to act sensibly neither cowardly nor reckless. Balance is needed in every aspect of life. When things are in balance they are in perfect harmony. Nature keeps the whole universe in equilibrium. I respect nature as some people respect their god. Nature will restore the unbalance man has created in the world. Some men fear God and have no respect for nature this is reckless ignorance not courage.

The good life.

The good life.

Abrahamic religions use the fear of God to enforce laws. Fear is often used by politicians to sway public opinion. Advertising uses many methods to sell products fear is one of their tactics. Is your house so dirty it is threatening to ruin your health? Insects must be killed and the ads show how to do it. Fear needs to be balanced with caution and common-sense. What kills insects surely is not good for our health. As for germs a healthy person’s immune system can cope with most germs. Bacteria is like cholesterol there are two kinds one kind is good for you the other blocks up your circulatory system. Less than one percent of bacteria are harmful some that live in your body are essential for your health. Cleanliness is very important but advertising has some people frightened of a bit mother earth.

Kimchee Seoul street market.

I grew up with nothing more than water from a well to drink and a bar of plain soap was used to wash with. There were only basic natural things to remedy coughs, cuts and all the usual ailments.  No flush toilets when I was a boy only what we called a dunny. We did not use chemicals unless there was a real problem. We had no air-conditioning we opened a window and had fresh air; it killed germs and toughened me up. I have survived eighty-one years and never been unduly afraid of a bit of dirt. I do not expect doctors to look after my health, it is my responsibility. I try to live a clean and balanced life without all the pills and disinfectants I do not need chemical germ and insect killers to protect me.

All we needed.

All we needed.

We tend to leave it up to bureaucrats to protect us, consequently there are too many laws supposedly to protect the public. Health regulations have gone to extremes. I have eaten food prepared and cooked at food stalls in the streets of other countries and have suffered no ill effects. Seeing the fresh food cooked one can decide if it is fit to eat. In a restaurant, even though health department requirements have been met, one still has to trust the management. These laws cut down competition from the small man and favour the big food chain operators. We have lost control over our own welfare because of imaginary fears.

Safety regulations have a place but they have now taken a lot of the skill, challenge and team effort out of construction work. In general work today is looked upon as making money to buy luxuries. People used to ask “What is your game?” when they wanted to know how you made a living, now it is “What is your job?” Sport has become a job. TV time and sponsoring by big business has taken the fun out of the game. We need some courage to take control and get balance back in our life.

Breakfast fresh vegetable omelette.

I do not fear the Muslims, the Christians or the Hindus. The Islamic Jihad does not scare me as I am no threat to their religion. There may be one religious fanatic in thousands. Should we fear all the others? You have more chance of being killed by a car. Do you hate cars because of this? I do not agree with many religions or their ideas but I find wisdom in some and I do respect the ethics of the sincere followers. I try to live by the five precepts that all major religions incorporate.  There are good people everywhere there are no evil people only the ignorant or sick. We should try to teach the ignorant and show compassion and care for the sick. The incurable cases need special care.  Courage balanced with understanding instead fear is needed.

Picnic lunch with friends.

The white haired boy having a picnic lunch with friends.

We should be weighing up and concentrating on real dangers. Nature is trying to balance everything and man is only trying to balance the budget. Do not trust your health and welfare to doctors, chemists, bureaucrats or big business. Do not believe all the advertising, think for yourself and take responsibility for your own welfare. Do not let fear, greed or ignorance control you. According to Shakespeare, “Cowards die many times before their deaths, the valiant die but once”. Often rephrased as, a coward dies a thousand deaths a hero dies but once. Cowards or heroes death is inevitable so cherish all life and leave something for the next generation. All Mother Nature’s gifts are free and mans incestuous desires are unforgivable. Man’s greed is   reckless unbalancing the ecology there is nothing brave or courageous in raping mother earth.

A Balancing menagerie.

Beetle mainia.

Beetle mania.

The light outside the toilets attract the Black Beetles, they fly too close, crash into it and fall to the ground stunned. The Green-tree Frogs sit waiting for the beetles. As soon as the beetle recovers and moves the frog sees the movement. In an instant the beetle disappears, the end of the frog’s tongue is the end of the beetle.

I witnessed this with the frogs, beetles and Green Tree Snakes in action at Bunderbreg Qld. .

Australia Christmas beetle.

Australia Christmas beetle.

Snakes are plentiful, in the garden by the toilet, they feed on the frogs. This is nature’s way of keeping things in balance. The snakes eat the frogs, the frogs eat the beetles, and the beetles eat the garden. We need this balance as deprived of plants we would perish.

It is not easy being green.

It is not easy being green.

Everything is interdependent if one creature dies out this has an effect on the whole chain of balance. This is only one simple example of nature’s way of keeping things in balance. There are complex connections only a botanist or scientist studying the food chains in nature would be aware of.

The Green Tree Frog often seen in Queensland.

The Green Tree Frog .

Man has created many problems by interfering with natures balance. Rabbits, foxes, cats, Prickly-pear, Cane Toads even Honey Bees and many more invasive pests have been introduced into Australia.

Often in toilet bowls.

Often in Queensland toilet bowls.

Everything has been tried to eradicate rabbits, a virus causing Myxomatosis, a very inhumane way of killing them, had some success, the longest fence in the world, 1,833 km,1,139 miles, has been built to contain them, rabbits are still a pest.

He does not look wild.

He does not look wild.

Prickly pear invaded 40,000 square km of farm land till a moth was imported from South America its lava ate the Prickly pear. This is claimed to be a success in biological pest control. Drugs cure illness but have side effects and there are side effects from biological cures also.

Carpet Snake actually a python and this one is not real.

Carpet Snake actually a python and this one is not real.

The introduction of the Cane toad brought in to get rid of a beetle that was a problem to the sugar cane industry. It has spread from Queensland to Western Australia it is estimated it migrates at the rate of 140 km per year. Its poison kills any animal that eats it and it competes with native wild life for food. This has causing a decline in the numbers of native creatures.

The Honey Bee.

The Honey Bee.

How could a Honey bee affect our environment?  Many native flowers can only be pollinated by native bees and insects. The flowers are shaped to allow only special insects to spread their pollen to other flowers. Honey bees are not capable of spreading and fertilizing these flowers. The Honey bees swarm and inhabit hollows in trees, depriving the native species of a home.

Another colourful beetle I saw in west Australia.

Another colourful beetle I saw in west Australia.

Natures balance is far more complex than most people realize. In physics there is no action without a reaction. In nature there is no action without repercussions. These are laws man must heed or suffer the consequences. Nature is infinite, man is mortal we either live in harmony with nature or continue to fight her and it is obvious to anyone, that is not blinded by greed, who will win.

The Koala is in danger because of auburn sprawl.

The Koala is in danger because of auburn sprawl.

Man is like the beetle eating up natures green garden, but man destroys any controlling force. Our population explosion is like a cancer on our island planet. The laws of nature cannot be altered without adverse side effects. If natures balance is disturbed in any way nature in its infinite time will restore the balance.

While these fellows are multiplying like crazy.

While both these species are multiplying like crazy.

Do not support wasteful ways and buy only what you need, recycle things. Live peacefully, war is wasteful and investing your money in armaments of destruction is as suicidal as smoking. Nature cannot be destroyed; it changes form, as water freezes or turns to steam. The climate heating up will not destroy any thing it will only alter things. Beatles, frogs and snakes, along with man will change, breaking down into compost for other lower forms of life to feed on. One way or another everything must change. It is mans unavoidable fate so let us do our best to prolong this wonderful life as long as possible.  Man has no answer other than going with the flow of nature to the best of his ability. We cannot fight to put it right, we can only do our own individual best.

An empty case.

An empty case.

 Steps to restore the environment.

Rest is found in the greens of nature.

This post was prompted because so many people are deeply concerned about the impact our materialistic system is having on the environment and our quality of life.

Worry is futile.

Worries and fears will not help and violent action will aggravate the problem. Putting our hands together praying may still our fear but the problem will remain. Although a practical spiritual approach is needed.

Friends with Buddha.

Understanding the Taoist ideas of wu-wei, (the action of non action) and to be in balance with nature, would be of some help. The Buddha’s understanding of the nature of reality found in the Four Noble Truths and practicing the steps he prescribed in The Eight Fold Path could be the answer. If we were to follow this philosophy the problems of the modern world could be turned around. With this understanding and practice I believe there would be a vast improvement in your happiness and the world in general.

Fathers choice a Christian child.

There is no need to change your religious beliefs, understanding the Four Noble Truths and by following the Eight Fold Path would enhance your existing beliefs not change them.

Sacred places are tranqual havens.

Mother natures problem child.

The problem child does not want to go to bed, stays up late watching television. What the child watches is mostly violence or negative nonsense interrupted by the advertising of useless extravagant things we cannot afford. The violence instills fear because of fear the child is driven to school. Two cars are then needed in the family. Father has no time to wait for busses to get to work. Busses are so infrequent, no-one uses them except old people and they get a concession on their fare, no wonder public transport is failing to give good service. The children need to be taken to sport, and other activities by car, they cannot ride their bikes because the roads are crowded with dangerous drivers, hurrying to keep up with the modern pace of the human race.

A nice toy for the boy.

The cost of all the labour-saving devices, we are enticed to buy by the advertising industry has made it necessary to go to a gym to exercise. We could get our exercise in many other ways but there is not time for messing around at the beach surfing or wandering in the mountains. We have to keep earning those dollars to pay for all our time-saving and fashionable, ego building, items advertising lured us into buying.

Natural and free is the way to be.

The garden is paved there is no time to play in a garden. A chlorinated swimming pool replaces the lawn, with a few sculptured garden gnomes and sometimes a concrete Buddha meditating. The birds, bees and interesting creatures have no reason to visit, this sterile unnatural place. Mother Nature’s delinquent children have no time to enjoy her free gifts. They are too busy greedily acquiring more things to hoard and clutter up their life.

Economical and practical.

This is not my problem I am not wasting my time worrying about the environment. Nature is infinite it cannot be destroyed; man will ultimately destroy himself with his ignorance. In nature nothing is lost it only changes, as matter in a compost heap breaks down to become nutrients for new life.

We need to take care, of natures beauty.

A truce is needed in all mans wars and a united effort is needed to restore our alliance with nature.

Altogether beautiful.

I am only concerned in fixing my own faults and how much I am abusing nature’s free gifts. I have little influence on the world; I only have influence on myself. Advertising is selling it but I am resisting the temptation to buy and throw out something just because it is faded or out of fashion. Do not buy unless you have a genuine need. Nature is a lasting free gift, other costly things are impermanent and time is an irreplaceable resource, once spent it can never be regained, you cannot relive yesterday. Our life is made of un-renewable time.

Good outlook, heigh position.

The big question.

Philosophers ask the big questions, here are some small questions and ironic answers.

Great job.

Why are we working long hours? The answer is to pay for time and labor saving devices. Why do I need a car to go to the gym? Because we get no exercise driving a car. Cycling or walking in the open air with the world unfolding at an enjoyable pace is worth considering.

Skys the limit.

Why do we need a car that travels faster than the legal speed limit? Same reason people smoke. We need to slow down and look at the flowers you do not see much at fifty km/hr through a smoke haze.

No gym fees low cost transport, no smoke.

Why do we buy expensive equipment and not read the manual on how to use all the available features? Because we do not need all the features we have paid for.

Why do we discard things that are still useful and serviceable? The reason often is because they are not the latest fashion.

We have it all.

Why do we waste our time on material things we do not need? Because we do not value our time that is an irreplaceable commodity.

We may think he has it all.

Why do we want everything? Because we are lacking something.

Why do people argue with us? It is because we are disagreeable. Why are we too short of time to relax? Because we are too busy making money.

On reflection this one has it all.

Why do we worry because most of the things we worry about never happen?

Why do we try to convert others to our beliefs? Because we will not consider changing our beliefs.

Why do some people want for nothing? It is because they are contented with having what they need and real needs are not extravagence.

Which one is the best?

It is a poor man that needs to greedily hoard material things in an effort to be happy. Modern technology can never surpass, in any field of mans costly endeavors, natures gifts. Nature’s wonderful gifts are free to those that respect and appreciate what she offers.

I think I’ll go by train.

This entire futile struggle needs to be questioned and a more leisurely approach, in balance with the flow of nature, is required.

Bikes are best.
