Want a good tip for the human race.

Want a good tip for the human race.

 Is My Writing Useless Rubbish?

You will not get better than this.

You will not get better tip than this.

Why make a new New Year Resolution? What was wrong with the old one? Didn’t last years work?

Entering to the Tip Shop, Hobart Tasmania.

Entering the Tip Shop, Hobart Tasmania. Note the gate made from scrap.

I suggest there was nothing wrong with it. The fault lay with you. The old one was still ok you just decided you wanted a new one.

It is history now.

It is history now.

This is happening too often these days. If your neighbour gets a new one you want one too.

They look trendy bags.

They look trendy bags.

This goes further than New Year resolutions that we did not persevere with to make work. We give up too easy, making no effort to fix anything faulty.  We used to make them work. Now we have given up, it is too easy to get a new one.

Art and crafts made from discarded items.

Art and crafts made from discarded items.

What Has Gone Wrong?

Better Art than some modern art.

Better Art than some modern art.

Not only with broken resolutions it is the whole commercial system. We have become a throwaway society. If it does not work do not try and fix it, toss it out. If our neighbour has one, we want one too, whether it is necessary or just because it is the flavour of the month, fashions in thing. “I can’t wear that, it is last year’s colour.”  “It will still protect you from the weather, but send it to the opp shop ( an opportunity shop that gives the profits to charity) some person will need it that has no big ego.”

Wow about this.

Wow about this.

It is not always just the ego that motivates this behaviour. It is peer pressure and constant advertising. Also not your fault entirely because things are made cheaply these days, but not to last. How can you fix it if you need special tools, or they are sealed and have to be broken into to get at worn or faulty parts? With the materials, technology and know-how we have today most machines could be manufactured to last our life time.

More Rubbish someone wants.

More Rubbish someone wants.

The problem is what would happen to all the people working in advertising and production jobs. It would affect every one’s job, no one would be safe. Politicians would have a major disaster on their hands to fix the economy. Only a major world war could get things up and percolating. There is something radically wrong with the capitalist system. How can we protect the ecosystem, the complex biological network of organisms and their environment? The big multinational businesses are designed to make a profit and the men who are running them are out of a job if the company is not paying a dividend.

This is like something out of Star Wars.

This is like something out of Star Wars.

I don’t think it will directly come to a world war. We like our status symbols, T shirts with the brand name vividly shown on them. I remember back when a firm gave you an item of clothing if it had them advertised on it. Now celebrities are given them and paid to wear them and all the sheep follow.

what is this

what is this

I will not make a New Year’s resolution the old ones have serve me well.

If I don’t need it, I will not buy it.

Be careful of how much processed food I eat. Balanced food intake with how much exercise I do.

Try to stay on my unitarian ethical path to improve my understanding of this wondrous world.

Elvis Lives.

Elvis The King and another Elvis.

The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll Lives.

Pauline checks them out.

Pauline checks them out.

The Elvis songs are still popular and the Rock ‘an’ Roll music will live forever. Where did the term Rock ‘an’ Roll originate, I don’t think it had anything to do with ships on the ocean. It was more rocking and rolling around in bed.

Elvis with those gyrating hips would suggest that too.

This is a tribute to the King.

This is a tribute to the King.

That is probably why parents got up tight about Rock ‘n’ Roll in the 50s. The young innocently accepted it without question as good fun.

Who has been to a dive in movie?

Who has been to a drive in movie?

The roots of rock an roll originated from rhythm and blues.  Bill Haley and The Comets, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis made it popular in the 50s. The movie Blackboard Jungle used Bill Haley’s Rock Around the Clock than Rock ‘n’ Roll got established. When Chuck Berry got in on the act with his brand of Rock ‘n’ Roll sky was the limit.

Elvis was the most spectacular of them all he was acknowledged as

The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Some say he never died in 1977 and I agree. I saw Elvis in Las Vegas and after the show he signed Pauline’s souvenir photo of him, that was in 1991. I have also seen him  at the Coolangatta’s  Winter Sun Festival, 2008.

Their not going to let Rock 'N' Roll die'

Unfortunately he lives only in his songs and his impersonators. Some impersonators are good like the one in Las Vegas others leave a lot to be desired.

To assess if someone can rise from the dead we should ask our self. How many people have we seen arise from being dead. Then count how many times we have been lied to or been misinformed.  We can then decide to believe which ever we have experienced the most of.

The T shirts worn once then kept as a memory.

The T shirts worn once then kept as a memory.

Sometimes we believe because that is what we would like. The human mind prefers to accept what is palatable. Life after death is a nice thought but you are never going the see the real Elvis Presley alive.

When I asked, “Do you believe in god.”

she said “No there is only a devil. If there was a god bad things would not happen.”

“You don’t believe the stories in the bible?”

“Not all the stories.”

“Why not?”

“Because it was written by men for men they made God a man. There is no missus God.”
“So what do you believe?”

“I believe greed is a sin, if there was not greed everyone would have enough and be happy.”

“Is greed the cause of all the problems in the world?”

“Ignorance, fear and greed are the causes of all evil, all good things are the result of kindness.”

“You sound like a Buddhist.”

“Religion causes arguments. Let’s change the subject, or we will finish up fighting, let’s make love not war.”

Comferdentually.

Not from the mouths of these babes,

By love she meant adult play, it was uninhibited physical passionate engagement.
The word love used loosely, as I often do, is ambiguous the word love needs adjectives to define it. Unconditional love – agape in Greek as apposed to Eros or the word meta the Pali word – like parental love.

Wise words.

Wise words.

My inhibitions prevented me from acting in a totally relaxed and natural way. I loved her and always will remember her free uninhibited love.
Religion gets people mixed up and perverted about their body. Causing natural behaviour to be distorted and can be the cause of mental disorders. Priests, monks and nuns, forced to live an unnatural life, come under a lot of pressure. Recently the Catholic Church has been embarrassed by priests charged with paedophilia.

A red rose has thorns.

A red rose has thorns.

I do not believe these people are evil it is what they are afflicted with that is the problem. Removing these impurities and defilements would restore the person. As waste water is filtered and becomes useful so can corrupt humans, in most cases be reformed.

Passion flower.

Passion flower.

Circumstances play a big part in our life. Life can be turbulent or calm; when we are having a bad hair day we are not at our best. Aussies are good sports men, no underhand play (bowling), when they are winning.
The point is get all the facts don’t be quick to condemn. There is a lot of good in the worst of us and a lot of bad in the best of us, so it is not right for the best of us to judge the rest of us. Who is going to cast the first stone?

SONGS HAVE MEMORIES.

To Bondi 1of 2 471_4000x3000

As I remember we fitted together like a key in a lock. Until the way-would gypsy in me broke the lock that held us together. I was not ready to nest, I wanted to spread my wings and fly. Like the wild goose Frankie Lain sang about, in the 50s. But it was Judith Durham’s The Carnival is over that was haunting me in the 60s those harbour lights had mesmerised me.

We like to think we are wild geese.

We like to think we are wild geese.

Life is a puzzle, full of ironies, and words are an imperfect medium to explain it. To allowed the monkey in our mind to wilfully swing from thought to thought is not mindful.  When one consciously lets the mind recall the past, or purposely plan for the future, it is alright. It is when we let our mind run on auto pilot and allow our subconscious to take the wheel we are in danger of losing control.

Who wants a better stove?

Who wants a better stove?

Hurrying to the future is prevalent in the technological world of today. Oblivious of our tasty breakfast we gulp our food to rush to a mundane job. Toiling for more than we need, desiring status symbols or devices we are told will save us time. Time cannot be saved; it is a passing thing that cannot be clung to. Aware, but not consciously aware and mindful, mindful is to be consciously aware, not running on auto pilot.

Full of youthful bounce.

Full of youthful bounce.

Knowing I am dwelling in the past is not fretting or regretting, it is recalling those passionate hot to trot youthful days, when love was synonymous with romance, infatuation and conquest. It is good not to forget those days and criticise the youth of today. Our vocabulary has improved now we know the meaning of reciprocity. Aware that true love is giving more than taking. True love is one thing that the more you give the more you receive.

Will they fall.... in-love ?

Will they fall…. in-love ?

Ignorant of the wisdom of the sages passed down through the ages. Back in my youth I had two gypsies in me, called curiosity and adventure, goading me on. The warm bed the tender caresses forfeited for faraway fields. There is no remorse, only a bitter sweet feeling of what might have been. I am sure I did the right thing; I needed to grow in understanding.

You see a lot when you travel.

You see a lot when you travel.

Traveling alone in foreign lands is the best teacher one can ever have.

May be this is your Christmas wish.

May be this is your Christmas wish.

In my memory she will remain a golden haired girl full of life. In reality I can imagine a grey and wrinkled woman. Our memory can span the ocean of time but an ocean of water has flown under the bridge since the 60s. Perhaps after a long tiresome journey she has gone home to rest. To be a billion dust-mites floating on the morning breeze to sparkle in the morning sun as new life.

A lovely person from the 60s.

A lovely person from the 60s.

Who knows?

I will end my love story here I have revealed enough. I have given you more than you realise, if not what you expected. Sorry if the ending was not a wonderful exciting climax. But this is not a TV romance made to make millions. It is just a story similar to many stories that leave us wondering.

This is the fruity ending, not as you pictured.

Am I a Buddhist?

Pauline in action.

Pauline in action.

Pauline’s post about Watt Buddharangsee, meaning Move or Change Places Temple, prompted me to think, All schools of Buddhism have the basic logical (Dharma) teachings of The Buddha. The Four Noble Truths and The Eightfold Path.

This photo shows the wheel with eight spokes.

This shrine shows the wheel with eight spokes.

The countries of South East Asia that have adopted Buddhism have incorporated their own cultures and customs in it. This resulted in many different varieties of Buddhism.

Inside the Stupa.

Still the fundamental teachings are the same. To abstain from all kinds of evil, promote all that is beneficial and purify the mind.

Stupa out side.

Stupa out side.

To understand all things are impermanent and subject to change, abstain from all kinds of evil and personally develop ethical behaviour, as outlined in the Buddha’s basic teaching. Consequently there have been no major conflicts between different Buddhist religious groups.

Pauline put this photo in her post.

Pauline put this photo in her post.

The three major Abrahamic religions conversely are in aggressive conflict for domination. Regardless of the fact that their God, the one they claim to be almighty, condemns killing.

Why is this abandoned little church?

Why is this little church abandoned?

Perhaps Lau Tzu had it right when he said “The Tao that can be named is not the true Tao.” (The Tao is the inexplicable force that keeps the whole cosmos in equilibrium.) Another aspect of Taoism is yin and yang, when yin and yang are in balance it is believed to be perfect harmony. This is described as Wu Wei meaning in flow with nature.

The trees were an ideal setting for the Stupa.

The trees were an ideal setting for the Stupa.

I am not a Taoist, Buddhist, Hindu and defiantly not one of the many factions of the Abrahamic dogmas, Jews, Christians or Muslims with their multitude of denomination all arguing for dominance.

The trees looked good from all angles.

The trees looked good from all angles.

I believe they all have the same good basic ethics but much of the good is lost in the belief in the supernatural, other myths and wishful thinking.

A Thought.

Some one planted a Sunflower seed.

A Thought.

I took the time to look into this Bromeliad.

I took the time to look into this Bromeliad.

A thought is like a seed, will this seed grow? You will have to be patient you cannot hurry the process. Are you thinking about what you are doing now or are you thinking about something in the future? To make a good garden we must plant good seeds and take care how we plant them. You know the saying about sowing seed. The saying in one form or another has been attributed to many wise men. But my mother said “Be aware, as you sow so you reap.” Perhaps one of those wise guys got it from his mother but is a woman going to get credit. We often fail to follow the advice regardless of where it came from.

This leaf reminded me of an Indian Chief.

This leaf reminded me of an Indian Chief.

Mindful is more than aware, just as hearing is not the same as listening, it is like seeing but not observing. Busy people can be unaware of the scent of Jasmine on the air they breathe; or notice the white flowers standing out like stars on the green foliage or the blue sky. Intent on being somewhere else the present of now is lost. Not consciously aware as if flying in a fog on auto pilot we are not present for nature’s presents.

Not like an Indian any more a Banksia and seed head.

Not like an Indian any more a Banksia and seed head.

Slow down let the world catch up to you.

You see more if you slow down.

You see more if you slow down.

If I am mindful my world is changed to peace and beauty. If everyone was mindful the world would become a pleasant, peaceful, paradise. There would be no more fast food or take away, we would sit down, savour our food, every tasty morsel. No more unaware gobbling our food while watching TV. Mindless eating causes over weight and bad health.

Everything is beautiful.

Everything is beautiful.

What about earning a living? Yes we would still need to work but being consciously aware we would take pride in our work. Not rushing it to get to some future want.

Some are obvious.

Some are obvious.

Problems are caused because we want to be somewhere other than in the here and now.

Some not so easily noticed.

Some not so easily noticed.

Wanting is not the same a needing. We need to be present in the now not wanting to be somewhere in the future. Missing the wonder of now we waste our life. It is the journey not the destination. When your journey is over you can say, been there done that but I still don’t know what it was all about.

All are worth spending time with.

All are worth spending time with.

The result is a shoddy job, half done giving us no sense of achievement. When we work with enthusiasm with the feeling we are doing something worthwhile. Taking the time necessary to do things properly is worthwhile. When our mind is engaged in what we are doing we are alive.

You may find some miracle of engineering.

You may find some miracle of engineering.

A thought repeated becomes a habit. Our thoughts govern our actions. Think wholesome thoughts, to do this feed the mind nourishing vitalising food. You will not find much wholesome food advertised on TV.

Hurry and you miss even the obvious.

Hurry and you miss even the obvious.

Fully Absorber in the Now.

“Jack!”

I put the finishing touches to the picture.

Fully focused on what I am doing and thinking of nothing else.

Now I think I’ll pencil it in the calligraphy, then I hear but am not listening.

“Jack!!”

‘Then see how it looks before using the ink.’

“Jack!!!”

I am aware of the irritable emotion but answer without thinking.

“What’s the problem?”

“You are the problem, I don’t know if you can hear me or are ignoring me.”

“I am absorbed, doing some art.”

“Can’t you just say YES so I know you have heard?”

Aware I am getting annoyed, I should have done my little, count to ten, few deep breaths, unmindful I just respond.

! YES! YES!” Then I realise I am losing my temper.

“Just go back to your art sorry I interrupted you!”

“No I want to know, should I ring the fire brigade or the police what is the emergency?” That was I realise nasty, sarcasm.

“It is not important, I just wanted to know where you hid the rake, it is not where it should be kept.”

“Sorry, last time I saw it was when we were mulching up the pruning.”

“Well it is not where it should be kept.”

I am trying to recall what happened.

“I was raking up the last of the leaves; yes, you called me to help put the tarp around the mulching machine. Have you looked in where the mulcher is?”

“No, did you leave it there?”

“May be I was raking up and you asked me to help you with the mulcher I probably just put it down without thinking, I remember putting my gloves back on the bench but can’t remember what I did with the rake.”

“You remember all that but can’t remember where you put the rake.”

“Well I was not thinking at the time I was running on auto pilot, unmindful just responding not fully aware.”

“What’s all this living in the now you have been reading about?”

Two minutes later “I found the rake, where you left it in by the mulcher.”

“That’s great, come and have a look at what I’ve done.”

“I like the surfer catching the wave, but what has that got to do with the writing,

“We only have one moment to live and that is NOW.”

“Well the wave is passing but the surfer has caught it, he is living right in the now.”

“And you left the rake in the past.”

“Let’s not live in the past”

“If you want to live in the now, be mindful of where you leave the rake in future.”

Some times we get dumped.

Walking .

Pauline & camera New Zealand.

Pauline & camera New Zealand.

Taking your camera for a walk is a great way to get you going, motivated to get out walking. A dog is another way. I see lots of happy dogs on my walks. They are loved and are not just kept as Guard dogs. Although some sensible ladies have a dog so they can do their jogging in secluded places in safety.

Surf Girl out to catch a wave.

Looking at statistics not many get molested out jogging it is the ones that are out late partying that run the bigger risk.

Letting the world catch up.

Dogs enjoy exercise and thrive on love, who doesn’t? Dogs that miss out on love and exercise bark at every thing, so do humans.

Enjoy the view Mt Taronga.

Other things I see are people meditating, fishing and taking their surf board out. There are lots of things to get one percolating. Art gets Zeebra going and Zeebra’s art got Pauline going and I go back into it too. I used to use my sketching to supplement the writing in my diary when I travelled. But the digital camera made it too easy.

Catching the sun rise.

Catching the sun rise.

I have never been good at writing that is why the blog is good for me it helped improve my writing. Now having a sketch pad and pencil or a good book, not necessarily “the good book”, is a good way to fill in time while waiting. Pauline’s art is really good she sold three at the exhibition the art group put on.  Only one of mine sold I think who ever bought it probably liked the subject.

Natures pictures get a lots of people going.

Nature’s pictures get a lot of people going on Mt Maunganui.

They say you should dance like nobody is watching. Sing like no one can hear you and love like you have never been hurt, I changed the last line of that quote to, like there is no tomorrow. Well I draw like no one is going to see it except my friends. Friends always say kind things and who cares what the others say. Yet the critics can tell us where we are going wrong.

Worth the effort.

Worth the effort.

So do not get upset at criticism or annoyed when you hear a dog bark they are trying to tell us something. We should enjoy whatever we are doing it is all exercise that our body needs, now machines are doing all the heavy work and starting to do a lot of the pleasurable activity too. Technology can steel a lot of the craftsman-ship we once took pride in. Balance is needed in all we encounter.

Keeping fit the natural way, The Mount.

I am wandering, ambling, straying off the walking path. It is human to err and not a big problem if once we realise we have been lead off the path we get back on the right path. I will never be lost because home is where I hang my hat.

Through the rose garden to the seats with views of the sunrise over the harbour..

Up early to catch the sun rise and instead of a dog I will take my camera. Today we are driving back to Laurence’s farm at Waiuku from Jackie’s place at Tauranga. It will be a laid back, lazy car day so a morning walk will do me good.

They are planning an unsuccessful escape.

They are planning an unsuccessful escape.

The photography this morning was not spectacular but there are always surprises when in unfamiliar territory. There were people doing their boot camp fitness. They needed two coaches to motivate them. It reminded me of a scene from the movie “Cool Hand Luke”, where Paul Newman is working in a chain gang with a guard standing over them.  I could not take any more photos because of the flat camera battery.  I was getting hungry, so returned to find the others were still in bed asleep. I was locked out they could not hear the doorbell. They say problems come in threes. So at the risk of some good neighbour ringing the police I climb over the wall and knock on Pauline’s window. No police, so it looks like I may have a slight delay before the next inevitable mishap.

Greg made scrambled eggs and tomatoes, a pleasant change from our usual fruit muesli and yogurt. It was delicious Kai, that’s the Maori word for food, the Aussie word is tucker. If you want interesting history, geography and educational information hit on Pauline’s blog. You will not find much in mine.

These tourists asked the right bloke to take their photo.

Pauline decided to take an alternative route back. That took us via Matamata where the movie “Lord of the Rings” was made. We had previously visited the film site see it here. This time the town was our main focus. It was really pleasant, both people and the unique way they presented and displayed what they had to offer.

Shops in N.Z. are a work of art and the quality of N.Z. products, both factory and hand crafted, are quality. We had morning tea, actually cappuccino, with a date scone and a muffin. As usual we ate Chinese style that is we shared our cakes. That is our way of not over eating but sampling more of the tasty treats.

I liked this display, done by the shop owners daughter.

We called in to see Linda, the naturopath that gave me good advice and fixed some of my injuries. Linda was not in, well that is good if you believe things happen in threes. So we stop along the driveway to take photos of the old farm workers cottage.

The neighbouring farmer came over to check us out and told us Linda was in America on a business trip.

Pauline chatted with the farmer about the changes on the farm since she was there, in the late 1970’s. That was when Gran and Pa ran the farm with Pauline helping out in exchange for accommodation in the farm cottage.  Pauline was working in shopping centres all around Auckland photographing babies for Milestone. A car and trailer went with the job and with no rent to pay she was saving up to do an overseas trip. Now her children had left home Laurence working and Jackie at university.

Can you guess why it was not a fast trip?

Then I got into the act, that was 33 years ago. I had a house in Hamilton and was working on Muldoon’s think big scheme. Rightly or wrongly Muldoon as Prime Minister developed N.Z. Industry, but put the country in debt doing it.

Those were the days. I got to know that road between Hamilton and the farm pretty well. Pauline showed me some beautiful things about farm life. It was amazing seeing cows breathing out steam in the crisp early morning light. It is no wonder she said she could never live in the city.

Anyway Pauline and I are back in NZ that is why I have not been keeping in touch with the blogging family. We are catching up with our Kiwi family. I am having a jam packed, joyous time in the most wonderful little country in the world, Australia is the most wonderful big country.

Pauline’s son needed us to mind the cat while he went on his honeymoon and I wanted to be on the right side of the Tasman Sea for the final of the world rugby cup, the Wallabies and The All Blacks. The Kiwis love their sport and are mad about the All Blacks.

An advertising ploy was to put out a black milk bottle and a black Weetabix box featuring photos of The All Blacks team. No wonder they won with that kind of home support.

We always get VIP treatment from our Kiwi family, so we are winners also. Laurence’s farm is better than a luxury holiday retreat. This weekend we are at Jackie and Greg’s place at Tauranga and the adjacent Mt Maunganui.

This tests me every time I visit, I think I am improving.

Walking the Mount has become a traditional challenge for me. I love that walk it is a most spectacular scenic experience.

We have taken heaps of photos, done some drawing and it is one long sightseeing adventure. I have found a gym in Waiuku. I need their cross trainer to get my endorphin flowing, as my knees can’t hack the impact of running.

Another wonderful day.

Another wonderful day.

The sun is shining and I have lots of good things to do before my holiday is over. See you later.
