Am I a Buddhist?

Pauline in action.

Pauline’s post about Watt Buddharangsee, meaning Move or Change Places Temple, prompted me to think, All schools of Buddhism have the basic logical (Dharma) teachings of The Buddha. The Four Noble Truths and The Eightfold Path.

The countries of South East Asia that have adopted Buddhism have incorporated their own cultures and customs in it. This resulted in many different varieties of Buddhism.

Still the fundamental teachings are the same. To abstain from all kinds of evil, promote all that is beneficial and purify the mind.

To understand all things are impermanent and subject to change, abstain from all kinds of evil and personally develop ethical behaviour, as outlined in the Buddha’s basic teaching. Consequently there have been no major conflicts between different Buddhist religious groups.

The three major Abrahamic religions conversely are in aggressive conflict for domination. Regardless of the fact that their God, the one they claim to be almighty, condemns killing.

Perhaps Lau Tzu had it right when he said “The Tao that can be named is not the true Tao.” (The Tao is the inexplicable force that keeps the whole cosmos in equilibrium.) Another aspect of Taoism is yin and yang, when yin and yang are in balance it is believed to be perfect harmony. This is described as Wu Wei meaning in flow with nature.

I am not a Taoist, Buddhist, Hindu and defiantly not one of the many factions of the Abrahamic dogmas, Jews, Christians or Muslims with their multitude of denomination all arguing for dominance.

The trees looked good from all angles.

I believe they all have the same good basic ethics but much of the good is lost in the belief in the supernatural, other myths and wishful thinking.

Do you believe in dreams?

Almost bed time.

Almost bed time.

I had this dream.

One of Gabriel's friends.

One of Gabriel’s friends.

It is the middle of night, am I dreaming? Perched on the foot of my bed is a winged intruder. I have this strange feeling of déjà vu. My vision is clearing the intruder is an angel, that would explain how it got in here with the door locked and the apartment on the thirteenth floor. I understand that angels are capable of flight; also if I am dreaming anything is possible. Cogito ego sum or je pense donc je suis, I am dreaming I am not multilingual, I think therefore I am, I must be wide awake because I recognize this bloke invading my space.

“ G’day Gabriel what are you doing in Aussie? I inquire.

“I am like the Blues Brothers Jack, I am on a mission from God.”

“More like you are Down-under up to mischief as usual.” fearlessly I tell him.

“I am here to save God’s children; you still carry the sins of your convict fathers.”

I ignore this remark and hit him with one below the belt.

“Are you going to pollinate any virgin flowers this time?” I ask defiantly.

“You got it all wrong that was the Holy Ghost Jack, have you no faith?”

“I suppose the world is ready for another prophet, Mahomet’s poetic words are being undermined by terrorists.” I reply cynically.

“Exactly the world is in a devastating situation.” He says giving me a pleading look.

Here we go again, I Imagine I got that old feeling, this music is going round in my head, like a haunting refrain.  All I can think to say to Gabriel is in Olivia Newton John’s song, “Please mister please I don’t want to ever hear that song again.”

“What song?  Amazing Grace you like all the feeling in that one.”  He said in his coaxing angelic voice.

Not a nice way to spend Easter.

Not a nice way to spend Easter.

“I know what your mission is, to find another prophet like Mahomet or Jesus. No way, Jesus was literally, double crossed, and there’s been nothing but problems since that apple episode in the garden.” Having said that I stop and think, they still have dire straits in Iraq, it is said that was the site of the garden of Eden. I must be coming down with industrial disease or something. I plug-in some music, roll over and to the sound of music and go back to sleep.

Is he dreaming he is a butterfly.

Is he dreaming he is a butterfly.

Next morning I think maybe I have turned down my big chance but I believe it was all a dream. In the light of day I know I am not a butterfly dreaming I am a man. In China a man dreamt he was a butterfly, next day he thought am I a butterfly dreaming I am man. I have read of other similar cases, a man dreamt he was in a garden, picks a flower and when he woke up he has the flower in his hand. There are people who believe in dreams and people who do not. Do you believe the dream I had or do you think am I crazy or just fabricating this story to get you thinking?

Is he dreaming he is a man?

Is he dreaming he is a man?

We all are guilty.

Stop and think.

Stop and think.

Sometimes I am like a sham shaman, other times I am sincere, just like you, to my own self I am true. If life is a stage truth is not an issue it is the acting that matters. Speech is ‘the gift of the gab’ they say, action is what matters. An actor said “Sincerity is of the utmost importance; once you can fake sincerity you achieve top billing.” I would add “You are then a star, a role-model for the naive to emulate.” To recognize the fake, the young and green need to mature. Immature people are influenced by celebrities and stars and the parts they play. In both cases antisocial behavior is made to look acceptable and clever. In life everyone should be authentic and play their part to the best of their ability and set a good example.

On stage doing their thing.

On stage doing their thing.

To put it another way, ‘This above all, to thine own self be true. And it must follow as the night the day. Thou can’st not be false to any man.’ A father’s advice to his son as quoted in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. All the world’s a stage, whether it is ‘as you like it’ or not, and men and women are merely players: I agree with William ‘they come and go; and one man plays many parts in his life.’ On stage acting matters but in life sincerity is of the utmost importance. My father’s advice was “Talk’s cheap, it takes money to buy whisky.” We need a bright and noble star to emulate. As an example that helps us act honorable to the best of our ability.

A toeist.

A toeist.

Sham or shaman, Taoist, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Christian, Muslim or any one of their innumerable branches does not matter to me. It is the sincerity of their actions that I focus on and it is not the action in its self that matters it is the intention of the action. A doctor cuts, a butcher cuts, the same action with a different intention. Criticism can be meant as helpful advice or to hurt. Knowing the difference takes calm deliberation and wisdom. All the above mentioned beliefs contain some wisdom and a lot of out dated stupidity. To play our part to the best of our ability we need to be unbiased and learn from all the best of the best role-models whether mystic or scientist, Philosopher or priest. Sorting out the facts from the fiction and the useful from the pointless that is the challenge.

They are doing it their way.

They are doing it their way.

The skin of a banana is discarded what we value is the nourishing food it contains. Behind the clouds the sun shines, and when we understand, we realize the clouds also have their uses. Things are not always as clear as a cloudless sky or as easy to peel as a banana. Like the weather all things are subject to change. Understanding the complex nature of life is one of life’s greatest challengers. Understanding the value hidden behind the worthless takes an open mind and patience, combined with study and practice.

Put to better use.

Put to better use.

Some things from the past are useful other ancient things are obsolete. Who today uses a cut-throat razor to shave with? But there are many out dated beliefs from the past we still cling to. Some of these beliefs are more dangerous than a cut-throat razor. Science has given us a longer and easier life full of wonderful inventions. Believing the world was made for man to exploit is why these inventions are misused. We mistakenly blame science, believing we need to get back to the good old days. What is needed is to stop the greed and the wasteful destruction and share these gifts rather than abuse and fight over them.

Life is not a stage, we are not play acting. We need to stop the play acting and be genuine. Buying not what we want but only what we need. Do not support people in power, both political and religious that are promoting fear and greed. We need people who promote caring and sharing. Sensible leaders are needed that promote conservation and sustainable energy production. Religious people argue about things that happened thousands of years ago. Our personal undivided attention needs to be directed to peace. War causes heart ache and devastation to the planet. Science can turn our down ward spiral around if we each do our individual part. To thine own self be true and it will follow as the night the day. Thou can’st not be false to any man. This means questioning our actions, mindful of how we as individuals are abusing our fellow man and nature.
