Trust.

I feel safe Pauline is driving. Note the face in the rock watching us go by.

Trust.

Taken from a foot bridge.

Taken from a foot bridge.

Trust is a white line 100 mm wide separating two vehicles, traveling in opposite directions, hurrying to save time. There could be a loose nut holding the wheel, besides that there could be a mechanical fault. People dice with death to save time. To them time equates to money it is x number of dollars per hour and those dollars can be hoarded and used later. Not realising time cannot be deposited in a bank to use later, they risk their lives. Time is wasted when we buy more than we needed.  Time cannot be stopped in its relentless progress, to be spent later. Foolishly hurrying to meet dead-lines the now is lost. We cannot trust that thin line to save us from an abrupt stop, ending our progress and acquisition.

Driving at 110 no time to look at the scenery.

Driving at 110 no time to look at the scenery.

Time has to be spent now. Life is wasted if the now is spent regretting the past and if what we are doing now is rushed, wanting to be somewhere else. The joy of engagement with what we are doing now is squandered if we are hurrying to a future enjoyment. We often find our expectations disappointing, especially if a TV program is the enjoyment we are rushing to.  If driving and our mind is wandering the machine could also wander crossed the line and all future plans are then postponed or terminated. The Buddhists say “When you wash dishes, wash dishes.”  Today dishes are often hurriedly put in a machine to be washed. We think we are saving time, but the machine has a price tag and running costs

Having a great time, Goulburn art gallery.

Having a great time, Goulburn art gallery.

Life was leisurely when time was measured by the position of the sun as it steadily progressed across the sky. Now every second of life is measured with digital precision, this combined with other technology has affected our lives. These inventions are wonderful if they are used wisely. Be aware the value of a labour-saving device must be balanced against its initial cost, its running costs, storage and maintenance.  Think do you really need what advertising says you must have. Some ads even say “buy now pay later”, and you will pay dearly later. Hurry, buy now while stocks last. Think, if they are selling so fast why are they paying to advertise, surly word of mouth would suffice.

Relaxed focused on purl and plain.

Relaxed focused on pearl and plain.

Things we do by hand give much more joy and satisfaction. A home cooked meal can be a pleasure to make and nourishing to eat. But you may not have the time to cook a meal if you are working long hours to pay for a state of the art stove and a dishwasher. So you go and buy a Chinese take away, knowing they are the best of the fast food places. A vegetable stir fry with fried rice is healthy. Asians usually use a wok and a gas burner to cook and get fast results with simple equipment.

Cooked in minutes using a wok, gas burner.

Cooked in minutes using a wok, gas burner.

Being aware of what we are doing we make fewer mistakes and driving mistakes can be fatal. Walking is a healthy pleasure, not a waste of time. Working to pay for petrol may not be as enjoyable.  Although if we have chosen an occupation we can take pride in, our work becomes a pleasure. These are things to quietly consider before any hasty action, especially buying something. Do we buy to fill a genuine need or is it a prestige icon to boost our ego? Will we get useful value, or will this be another thing to store and maintain?

Is a dead loss?

Is it a dead loss?

What is all this consumerism doing to our eco system? These are a few thoughts to consider when you are tempted by advertising to buy.

It is not only your life at risk.

It is not only your life at risk.

Depending what country you are driving in keep to the legally correct side of the white line. Be mindful, courteous and do not speed. Do not trust road markings to protect you; alert defensive driving is your only protection. We spend a lot of time out in traffic and more people are killed in traffic accidents than by spiders, snakes and sharks.  Are you more afraid of these creatures than busy streets?  Yet these creatures mostly avoid humans because they fear us. Our fears are mostly misplaced we should be cautious, but not afraid, and on the roads careful, cautious, courteous.

Why hurry? We all know the end.

Why hurry? We all know the end.

Cleaning Windows.

A window is like a picture in a book and it is said a picture is worth a thousand words. If those windows are not clean it is like having dirty pictures in your home. The pictures we look at will influence our thoughts and emotions. Unwholesome pictures infect our thoughts. Those thoughts will become emotions that lead to actions that develop into habits. Keeping windows clean contributes to our wellbeing.

Sunset and Busselton Jetty reflected in windows.

Sunset and Busselton Jetty reflected in windows.

Who lives without a speck or smudge of grime on their windows? We must not be judgemental remember the story of Jesus saying “Let the one without sin cast the first stone.” Look beyond the blemishes there is always beauty if we look for it. There are no bad people they are either sick or ignorant, the sick need help and the ignorant need teaching.

George Formby was an old-time performer who sang a saucy song called ‘When I’m Cleaning windows.’  I can only recall one line, ‘The blushing bride looks divine, the bridegroom says I’m doing fine, I’d rather have his job than mine, when I’m cleaning windows”. If you want more frivolity, hit the link.

If you want to clean windows I have a few tips from a professional window cleaner, when I took on a casual job window cleaning. I liked the work out on a ledge looking in on the office workers toiling at their desks, while I enjoyed the open air, exercising and making the windows sparkle. We used a chamois, now they use squeegees, so my tips are out dated, the one tip that is still applicable is clean horizontal on one side and vertical on the other so you know where the missed bits are.  A razor blade is handy to remove paint spots and the like. Pay attention to the corners and at my age I must remember I have lost the agility and balance so be careful.

A lot can be seen in or out of a window.

The Sydney, Queen Victoria Building was built 1898 is Renascence architecture and from 1959 to 1971 was occupied by The Sydney County Council. It was 1968 when I was cleaning windows on Q. V. B. and there were no hoists or swinging stages on the building. We had safety belts that hindered your movement and gave a false sense of safety as the old eye-bolts were insecure. The building has been refurbished many times and now is totally restored and packed with upmarket shops; do not miss looking in on it if you visit Sydney.

Window with a good view.

Window with a good view.

When cleaning the windows of the ladies change room I used to sing, not just because I was happy in my work, but ladies did not expect to see a man outside the window a couple of floors up. My singing was not all that good, but I think it was appreciated.

These ladies were happy to be looked at.

These ladies  in Albany were happy to be looked at.

There are shop windows to be looked in, windows to be looked out of and windows to the mind and windows of opportunity. There are also the Microsoft Windows programs that can be frustrating. When you are finding the computer program not acting as you would like. Take a few deep breaths look out the window and come back to reality.

It is Chrystal clear.

Miraculously Interconnected.

Misty morning sun.

Misty morning sun.

The sun shines, the rain falls and the seed germinates. The sun provides the energy, the earth the nutrients and the rain the moisture. The seed draws its power from the sun, its moisture from the rain and nutrients from the earth. This is a simple explanation a detailed account would be too complex and confusing.

Ebb and flow.

Ebb and flow.

The female produces the egg from the nutrients in her body, obtained from the nourishment from the food she has eaten. Likewise the male produces semen. When a couple mate only the strongest one of millions of sperm will reach the egg first. We are the winners in the human race the first out of those millions to live as human beings. Transformed into beings out of the vast cosmos but still part of the interconnected whole.

Reminder of the reality of impermanence.

Reminder of the reality of impermanence.

The flower of life is consumed or withers and is transformed into compost. Returning as nutrients to the earth this is the cycle of life. Nothing is wasted or destroyed it only changes form. Man has progressed in understanding over the last two or three thousand years. Empty space is not empty and the colour of the flower is not the colour we see, we see the colour that has not been absorbed by the flower it is the same with any other thing we look at.  We now realise the world is not flat or the centre of everything.

Inside the cave.

Inside the cave.

Primitive man needed an explanation for natural phenomena.  Man has an insatiable curiosity and a big ego, if we do not know we think up a logical hypotheses and work with it till it is proven or disproven. Thunder, lightening,  droughts and floods were explained with the invention of gods.  Today some of the gods are folk law, others have become myths, others fight on for supremacy. While some men still struggle searching for answers, others pray to their gods.

Above the storm clouds.

Above the storm clouds.

A monolithic single God could be the way to find peace but first we need to agree on which god and which prophet, or we will still have problems like Israel and Palestine.

Behind the clouds the sun still shines.

Behind the clouds the sun still shines.

Everything in time must change, when will people change with the times?

Rainbows appear.

Rainbows appear.

It is time we realised nature is a delicate balance everything is an interconnected part of the whole cosmos. Nature is infinite man is mortal. To declare war on nature by meddling in its balance is hastening our extinction. Man is a part of the natural system but not an essential part. Man has become a parasite that is in danger of killing its host.

In nature all is subject to change.

In nature all is subject to change.

We have to conserve, buying only what we need and not waste precious resources on war. Our commercial system has to change from a greedy, throwaway society to a caring compassionate one.

All things are passing like waves passing.

All things are passing like waves passing.

Not only the flower withers and dies, all things are subject to change, all things are passing. Completing the circle of life and becoming nourishment for the new eternal life. As Mr Spock said to Captain Kirk,” There is life on the planet Captain but not as we know it.” Another helpful quote “The Tao that can be described is not the real Tao.” These words are attributed to Lau Tzu. Along with religions I will put all the gods in the too hard basket; I dare not put them in the egg basket as gods are often violent and vengeful while eggs are fragile and vulnerable.

"I protect my eggs."

“I protect my eggs.”

Man does not need threats or bribes from a god and a religious hierarchy to goad them to live in harmony. What is needed is the understanding that all things are constantly changing and interdependent. One then realises that greed, hate and ignorance are the cause of discord. The survival of the fittest is misunderstood, the reality is the survival of a species is trust and sharing. There is no action without a like reaction. The reaction to force is resistance, love and kindness is not met with resistance. If one wants respect they must be respectable, what one gives one gets, this is the law of karma.

My view of one distant perspective.

My view of one distant perspective.

Born out of the world from the earth I came. Into the earth I will return home. This is the cycle of life; let no one mourn the change. Clinging and wanting what is impermanent is against the laws of nature and brings only grief, change is unavoidable.  When the transition comes to me, do not cry, I have been freed from my body. The person is now as the grass that grows; cows may turn the grass to milk. The flowers will bloom; I will be pushing up those daises. The birds will still sing in the entire vast array that makes a day and the non-existent separate I will be once more united with the all.

Can you see a cow and calf?

Can you see another animal eating with the cow?

What is name this rose?

What is the name of this rose?

What’s In a Name?

Known to no one Jack plays for fun.

Known to no one Jack plays for fun.

Jack Caldwell is an ordinary name for an ordinary person. I can work and make this name into a name of acclaim and transform my ordinary self into an extraordinary person.  With hard work and perseverance, I have been told anyone can achieve this. It is this well-trodden path that many people choose, to make their name of acclaim.

Sam Baroo would play for you.

Sam Baroo would play for you.

Do I want to join the jostling crowd clawing their way to an inevitable end, no my friend. I do not want to look back down the steep, rugged trail to see a joyless journey. I would rather sing and dance, love and romance, in tune with the song of a bird. Painting a picture of contentment I can then depart without resentment.

With much more talent than Jack.

With much more talent than Jack.

To make a name for myself I will use imagination and make my own name by lateral thinking. From all the heroes of the past the name I choose must outlast, withstanding the test of time, a name outstanding, and sublime. I have the phone book in my grasp but all the names appear ordinary. No name that rings a bell that will resound to waken everyone around, a peal that is appealing bringing forth a joyous feeling. This name must chime throughout the land a name so wondrous and grand.

Still most people never look back.

Still most people never look back.

I will graffiti my words, every place one must visit, and sign my signature for all to see, so everyone will remember me. Words of wisdom I will write, you will recall them late at night, to fill your dreams of wondrous things. I will paint my way every day, in every alley and walkway. Signing my name for all to see and you will remember me, for my pictures and calligraphy.  As I travel far and wide my music will be heard it will inspire happiness and dance. I will sing and play my ukulele, when you hear my music, you will give credit to my pseudonym, and say Sam Baroo the incredible, plain Jack will be forgotten. There will be no ‘play it again Sam’.

This is not Casablanca, no one says Play it again Sam..

This is not Casablanca, no one says Play it again Sam..

Without a self I will have no ego, no driving force to goad me on, I will live in peace and contentment. Let Sam Baroo take all the credit. His fame will not be ever lasting time conquers all in passing and nothing is permanent.

Jack paints but never expects to be hung.

Jack paints but never expects to be hung.

Stand centre stage Sam ‘as you like it’ take your bows while Jack stands in the wings enjoying the performance. “All the worlds a stage”, said Jack.  Sam’s teeth, Sam’s eyes, Sam’s everything.

My kind of advertising.

My kind of advertising.

 A new type of rose could be called Sam Baroo. I wonder how many varieties of roses there were in Shakespeare days. It sounds like they all had the same sweet smell, but one named Montague was a problem;

Juliet had no aversion, “Thou art thyself, though not a Montague. “What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot, nor arm, nor face, nor any other part belonging to a man.”

This prompts me to say, “Where does that leave you Sam Baroo?”

A beautiful rose fits all occasions, both happy and sad.

A beautiful rose fits all occasions, both happy and sad.

Juliet would say, “O, be some other name! What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet;”

Stop to think.

New Angle.

New Angle.

Why am I writing this blog? Who wants to hear what an old uneducated self-appointed guru is waffling about? What would I know that is not available on your smart phone or PC device? You have an encyclopedia and more at your finger tips. So stop reading rubbish and playing games. Be selective in what you fill your head with. There is so much information available, why are so many people acting so stupid? At the risk of being put in the know all category I will tell you. Most of the information is misinformation. we accept comments, opinions and gossip as facts. Think, who is this writer, commentator or critic, is his opinion based on proven facts or hearsay, have they an ulterior motive that suites some personal needs or political genders?

Cathedral masonry showing squar eyes.

Cathedral masonry showing a square eye. What is the message?

All I have is eighty years in life’s unstable, ever-changing and challenging school of hard knocks as qualifications.  I have not repeated many lessons and have survived with a smile on my face and I am looking forward to more challenges.

My Photoshop fun.

My Photoshop fun.

Just when I thought I had all the answers, they changed the questions.

Children enjoy Chinese New Years Celibrations.

Children enjoy Chinese New Years celebrations.

As for motives, it could be ego driven, but I have fooled myself into believing it was helpful advice to some young inexperienced people. But when I look at my blog comments and likes, it appears the people visiting my blog are not in that category.

Family fun ,note tatooed hand.

Family fun ,note tattooed hand.

The people who could benefit from my knowledge are watching TV or recovering from last night’s party or on their mobile phone chatting up their latest heart-throb. I think that is a natural and a good thing. How can one really learn if not by experience? They have the resilience and stamina to bounce back.  Some who push the limits may be cut down permanently because of their folly. As Ned Kelly said as they slipped the noose over his head, “Such is life.”

Candid camara almost.

Candid camera almost.

I now stop and think, I will change my style of blog. I will put in a few of my photos, more appropriate quotes and less of my words. I will mention books I believe are worth reading. That will give me more time to meditate, read more, exercise and practice what I have been preaching.

In their way windows appreciate a beautiful day.

In their way windows appreciate a beautiful day.

I have learned by writing my thoughts and ideas they are now clarified in my own mind. My blog has actually coached me in kindness, respect and appreciation of natures gifts. I smile at everyone I meet with the feeling that we are all one family.

Look out, look in and look at surprises are every where.

Waves like Queen 'We will rock you.'

Waves ”We will rock you.’ like Queen.

Mindful.

Some can handle the waves.

Notice some can handle these waves.

Aware, alert, focused and attentive all similar words but the word mindful fits what I am writing about. To be mindful of our thoughts and emotions and the effect they have on our wellbeing. We need to understanding how a sensory perception or a subliminal perception triggers a thought in our mind and gives rise to waves of emotion. with this understanding we pause before these waves break.

Stay safe ride the waves to the beach.

Stay safe ride the waves to the beach.

A thought has no power of its own, till the person experiencing that thought grants it the power. Discernment is needed before we act on a thought and the emotion it gave rise to. Mindful of these thoughts and emotions, pause and realize the feeling being experienced. Unmindful of strong emotional waves breaking in our mind, we are like a ship in heavy seas off a rocky shore. Aware of these emotions in our mind we have the power to steer clear of the hazards that can wreck our life.

These wawes can be handled.

These waves can be handled.

Aware that a wide range of thoughts and emotion can be prompted by our daily encounters. We are mindful of what is harmful and beneficial sensory input. What we surround ourselves with will reflect our thoughts, in a positive or negative way. Life today is full of distractions to be wary of, negative media reports and entertainment and unethical people create negative emotion. Such as impatience, anger, jealousy, hate, and other unhelpful emotional states to enter our mind. If mindful we pause and correct these negative thoughts. To be conscious of impatience and realize it is unproductive and if unmindful develops into anger. If anger is not controlled, like a fire it burns the one closest to it. Why do we upset ourselves in this way?

A fire out of control.

A fire out of control.

In heavy traffic impatience and anger often get out of control. Curtsy and consideration are The antidote. If someone lacks courtesy, anger is not the answer. Consideration is the answer. Perhaps the driver is under life threatening pressure, probably not, but to assume so is to lower our tension. Life is not always to our liking. We must be cooperative and obliging, going with life’s flow. Thoughts give rise to emotions, watchful of these thoughts and arising emotions gives us more control over events in our life.

Stopped by Bushfire.

Stopped by Bushfire.

Aware, alert and focused is not all, we need mindful as well. Aware and alert can avoid an accident but if we are not mindful of our thoughts and emotions we could react in a foolish way. By honking the horn in anger, alarming other drivers unnecessarily, or stick our arm out the window to make a rude gesture at the offending driver, thoughtless of passing vehicles. Unmindful we have lost our composure and our focus on what we are doing.  Letting the outside sensory perceptions run our mind unconsciously is to be out of control. Mindfulness is the first step in taking control of our life.

Natures restful cathedral.

Natures restful cathedral.

Meditation helps one understand how thoughts can disturb us. In breathing meditation when we are concentrating on the breath we should not be upset by invasive thoughts, this is how we learn to let thoughts come and go while staying focused on what we are doing. We become mindful of what is important to us in the now and, unflustered, can return to our practice. This is the way to become tranquil and undisturbed by the unimportant.

reflect on a peaceul mind.

Reflect on a peaceful mind.

Where do these invasive thoughts come from? If they are prompted by a noise directly experienced that is obvious. Some time they are a mystery. In our quiet secluded well-chosen meditation sanctuary, a gentle breeze touches us softly bringing the fragrance of frangipani. Concentrating on our breath we are only subliminally aware of the breeze and the scent but a thought from the past comes into our mind. We have a lifetime of memories waiting to be aroused. Mindful of pleasant or unpleasant thoughts we stay focused not distracted in this way we learn self-control.

The frangipani sent Pauline the thought in prompted.

The frangipani scent prompted the thought of Pauline.

Impatience, anger, hate and thoughts of revenge are not going to help anyone. Instead we can feel sorry for the drivers with problems. They will have  accidents hurting their self or someone else. Actions always have consequences and thoughts come before actions. Those wild, angry, hateful thoughts and actions will one day hatch into monsters that will bite the one who gave them birth. No need to be the judge and executioner that is a thankless task.  Kind and caring thoughts and actions will enhance our life. Meditate or sit quietly and think about being aware of emotional states as they arise in the mind.  Emotional states shape our life. To be mindful and have control of our emotions will bring peace into our life.

Devilish thoughts.

Instead of asprin.

Instead of aspirin.

Intercourse by any other name is not the same.

Takes two to Tango.

Takes two to Tango.

Have I lost my sense of humor, not up with the play, or unsympathetic with the lazy and ignorant? I admit I have no time for the lazy. The ignorant may be excused for thinking intercourse is a dish served in between entrée and the main meal or as a tit-bit to nibble on, before getting their teeth into the really satisfying main course. Some men may think that foreplay is the footy team singing the national anthem before the game commences.

A prickly seat.

A prickly seat.

That may be funny but there is no hilarity in comedians and people in general using gutter language, repeating the same inappropriate word over and over. I find this boring. No pun intended, although a hole has to be bored for the screwing to take place. There are people disturbed when sex is mentioned even for legitimate purposes. Some people are reluctant to discuss sex with their children. This could be one of the causes for the generation gap.

Mongo the mouse maller.

Mongo the mouse mauler.

Today people are mostly lazy when they do not use the appropriate adjective. There are educated people who know better but think they need to speak this way to show they are uninhibited. What they are doing is setting a bad example and degrading the language. These short abrupt words used inappropriately have lost their shock value. In times of utter frustration we now have to hit out or mash something, when a shocking word would have been sufficient.

He wood nototch speak.

He wood notch speak.

Get out of the habit of lazy bad-language, try to speak, not only truthful, but respectful and mindful of the feelings of others. Harsh disturbing language is unbecoming and disrespectful. If you want respect you must be respectable and considerate. This takes mindful thought and practice to enhance our reputation. Most arguments are caused by misunderstanding. Adding superfluous words makes communication difficult.

Fun with words.

Fun with words.

Like, ‘if you know what I mean’, because I do not know what you mean, unless you say what you mean. Our thoughts need to be clearly stated to be understood. My previous paragraph started, ‘get out of the habit’, I was not suggesting you strip of your priestly garments, language can be ambiguous. Get out of your slack tendency of copying people who fill their conversation with ’like’, ‘you know’ ‘sort of’ and ‘know what I mean’. I have noticed sports people generally converse far better than film stars and entertainers. Why is this? Could it be without their script actors are lost for words. Where would a politician be without a script writer? I think that subject warrants another post.

Tired of words.

Tired of words.

We need to make an effort to communicate clearly. When communication breaks down, our understanding is lost. There are no bad words it is where and how they are used that creates the problem.  All words have a purpose; the purpose of the words in this post point out frivolous humor can be conveyed without superfluous offensive language. I could be wrong, but I think comedy can be fun without the unnecessary fill in words. If intercourse was the word repeated over and over, would that add to a joke or a conversation?

Tired ofcomertials..

Tired of commercials..

Television has contributed to spreading bad habits. The TV audience is treated rudely with no consideration, interrupting a program to market products is contemptible. There are few programs that are beneficial or edifying, the biggest percentage shown is an insult to the intelligence. We should be selective in what we watch. If you feed on rubbish you will deteriorate to that level. There is a mute button on the remote so you can talk to your guests while the ads are on. Better still be a good host and turn off the TV.

Big mouth no speach.

Big mouth no speech.

When searching for the right word to convey your thoughts; don’t hum-and-ha be silent and think. You have the words, it is our recall that is the problem, like our computer, where did we file it? It is important to be mindful and recall the right word. When you speak have something of value to say. Our thoughts are private but once spoken cannot be retrieved. The wise often convey wisdom without words.

At the end of the day as they say.

At the end of the day as they say.

WORDS OF WISDOM.

Blue ones stand for wisdom.

Blue ones stand for wisdom.

To hear the word noble brings forth thoughts of inspiring deeds of kindness, generosity and selflessness. Just reading these words is uplifting. Words can conjure up all kinds of connotations. Words have associations in our mind that promote positive or negative thoughts. Thoughts give birth to like actions repeated actions become habits that shape our character.

Rising out of the mud to flower.

Rising out of the mud to flower.

A simple breathing meditation using words of beauty, encouragement and appreciation combined with concentrating on the in and out flow of air to and from our lungs promotes a tranquil, calm and contented state of mind. Life is dependent on the breath it is a necessary function automatically done, usually without thought.

Stay on the Path.

Stay on the Path.

To appreciate the life force air brings, consciously take a couple of deep breaths to settle yourself. Then focuses on an appropriate word while inhaling and another suitable word as you breathe out. ‘Calmness’ would be a good choice of words to focus on while you follow the inhalation of air to your lungs think “I breathe in calmness” then as you breath out think ‘I exhale all the tension. You can pick any word you like, wisdom, understanding or nourishment are suitable for the in breath and foolishness, ignorance or negative for the out breath.

Not an easy path.

Not an easy path.

Concentrating on the breath grounds us in the now and using positive words as affirmations in conjunction with following the breath brings self-control. In this way you become aware of the wondrous good in life and learn not to hold the negative emotions within you that spoil the enjoyment of life. People, unmindful of their thoughts, allow fires of hate and anger to flare-up. Those aware of negative, hot emotions can extinguish them and discard negative thoughts as soon as they arise.

A path to a worthwile goal.

A path to a worthwhile goal.

Knowing how to meditate is useless without constant practice. You have to practice till it is intrinsic, second-nature. To be successful in any endeavor practice is essential. This type of meditation plants seeds of goodness in the mind and removes the invasive weeds that plague our mind. As you practice meditation you become aware of those disturbing thoughts that come uninvited, like TV ads interrupting what we are focusing on. To be aware of thoughts and emotions is the first step in taking control of our life.

Flowers and insacts are interdependant.

Flowers and insects are interdependent.

Reciprocity is one of my favorite words. It is the idea of the ‘golden rule’ expressed in one form or another in all ethical traditions. The modern day version is ‘treat people the way you would like to be treated.’ Equanimity is another word I am fond of because it is synonymous with dignity, calmness and poise. I would like to have these qualities dignity, composure and serenity. These are the words that motivate me and inspire me to be a worthy member of humanity. Alas there is a jester, to put it kindly, residing in me ready to divert me from my noble quest.

Keeping on is a challenge.

Keeping on is a challenge.

Excuse me while I take in a couple of deep breaths then as I inhale I think beauty queens and as I exhale with a sigh I think all things are subject to change, beauty queens are no exception. Then I think I have changed over the years and value other qualities more than superficial beauty. Then I realize I am off on a tangent my thoughts are not focused. I return to my breathing meditation inhaling I think kindness and breathe out all the nastiness.

Where trere are watter lillies there are frogs.

Where there are water lilies there are frogs.

What are your favorite or inspirational words? You may help me improve my vocabulary or give me some new inspiration. Also let me know if this way of meditation is helpful. I am sure there are ways to meditation I have not tried, which could help me. This is not a one-way street the maxim is, ‘it is better to give than receive.’ I am looking forward to some helpful comments, ideas to assist me handle life’s challenges.

As in the conversation Humpty Dumpty had with Alice in. “Through the Looking Glass” by Lewis Carrolls. “When I say a word,” Humpty said in a rather scornful tone, “It means just what I choose it to mean – neither more nor less.” “The question is“said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many things.”

Pauline questions Humpty Dumpty.

The slaughter–house was demolished and in its place the abattoir was established. The meat industry still was not happy with sales. Meat processing plant was the phrase adopted, cut short, with a sharp knife, to processing plant. Flesh covered in hair has no resemblance to meat wrapped in plastic. The rainforests in Brazil are becoming grass lands for vast cattle-stations. Livestock use up more than a quarter of the earth’s surface and contribute to polluting precious water systems.

What is for lunch.

Ronald McDonald decided to dress up as a clown and put play grounds in his fast food outlets. If we can get the kids in mum and dad will follow. Advertising invades almost every area of our garden. Our only escape is a date with Mother Nature, to meditate and gain control of our thoughts. How much fertilizer can be put on the garden before it destroys our source of nourishment, killing our garden paradise, banishing us once more from Eden? Too much of a good thing is growth without attention to sustainability. There is a difference between useful necessities and luxuries or useless trinkets. We horde and want too much and share too little.

How about that?

How about that?

TV is a habit, especially if you have been on the tread mill all day trying to keep up with the Joneses. Leaving no time to quietly meditate or think is this really a good way to live? The Joneses are not content with all their toys advertising keeps showing them a new and better version they must have. This is dynamic lifter (The trade name for chicken manure) and is being tipped in our lounge rooms via the TV. TV is the secret weapon for the effluent that is spread to the affluent. Politicians keep you in a job so you will keep them in a job. The buy-buy materialistic economy is unsustainable.

I don't want to be The Red Rooster.

I don’t want to be The Red Rooster.

Too exhausted to cook a wholesome meal, take the family to Ronald’s or to Colonel Saunders if you prefer eating dead chicken. There is no cleanup after, just dump all the superfluous packaging in the rubbish bin, if you can muster up the energy. Then home to sit back and watch TV commercials, interrupted by a frivolous show that some viewers value more than the ads. No need to think, the canned-laughter and applause from the studio audience will let you know how to react; they are shown sign boards so they know when to laugh. This is an example of the vicious tread mill where the rodents train for the rat race.

Scrap metal collector.

The endless growth of materialistic economics combined with the imbalanced distribution to regions where life’s needs are lacking, has caused the increase of global temperatures and hostility between people. Freedom-fighters, guerrilla armies or are they terrorists it depends on whose side you are on. Today let us not call a spade a spade that would be ruled out-of-order. Social justice must prevail. Spade and Sambo are derogatory terms for Afro-American.

Can Barak Obama clean up the mess or is he going to be blamed for the chaos left in the wake of the Bush administration.  Someone is always the fall guy. I would like to see Uncle Sambo out-wit the tiger as in the cartoon link. Those old cartoons full of racial slurs were considered harmless fun by white people. As a child I could not see how harmful and hurtful they were.

All car parts of a days work.

All car parts of a days work.

It is a war of words it takes our mind off the real issues. Words have become weapons of mass deception. Uncle Sam needs you to fight for truth and justice and the American way. Play it again Sam, you cannot have it both ways, it is either truth and justice or the American way. Ironically many Americans would agree, they have lost faith in their political system. Intent on promoting the American way in the world and neglecting the flood banks in New Orleans. Where mother Nature put on a little demonstration of her power.

Just a wave from Nature.

Just a wave from Nature.

Australia is indebted to America, in that it saved us from the Japanese invasion. Supplying us with armaments at a reasonable cost, then when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor they actually entered the war to save Australia. The war took a decided turn when Uncle Sam arrived with the cavalry. In typical Hollywood fashion they were heroes to the rescue, no vengeful motives. Japan was on her last legs when America dropped atomic bombs on two cities that ended the war days, perhaps weeks, quicker than it would have. I am not going to say it was wrong to drop those bombs or the methane bombs on Vietnam or any of the other conflicts Sam has entered into in the name of truth and justice. I do know the armaments industry is big business also the construction industry. Well-off nations are always ready to help rebuild demolished cities and they are conversely expert in demolishing them.

Think food for thought, food for all.

Think food for thought, food for all.

We are all involved in the biggest battle in history. Can America help in the fight Mother Nature has declared on the human race? I do not think we will win without the super powers contributing. The best thing we can do is surrender our materialistic way of life. Giving what is surplus to our needs to those who are ravenous for life’s necessities. Saying the words clean air, food and shelter, will not help one deprived of these necessities. You may give to charities but how much cream is skimmed off your milk of kindness.

All he needs to be happy.

All he needs to be happy.

A cliché is an overused phrase, but often true. Charity begins at home, another is if you want to change the world start with yourself. Try to live an exemplary life, I say try, as I try to follow the Buddha’s wise philosophy and I find it is very easy to step off the path he taught. With all my harsh criticism of Uncle Sam I am no doubt straying, hurting some people’s feelings. But it is the intention more than the action that governs the merit of an action. My intention is not to be hurtful they are ideas to assist people with good intentions, stop and think how can I best help the suffering in the world today. Without violently protesting or getting distressed. It is impossible to win a fight with Mother Nature, we must cooperate. Some of my ideas I hope may be a step on the path to understanding.

An old favourite.

An old favourite.

No worries so simple.

Glass House Mountains.

Glass House Mountains.

We grow attached to things that are close to us. Not close like a pair of undies, not that kind of snuggly close. More the being together of a warm wooly jumper on a bleak winter day, the something or someone who shared the wins and the losses and kept you smiling when it was all up hill. Through the sun shine and storms, time takes its toll, the shine and sparkle diminishes but the fondness grows for the tried and true the familiar and reliable.

Softened by Nature.

Softened by Nature.

I am pleased with the fad that made faded, frayed and tattered jeans and other garments fashionable. Stressed furniture with artificial crackling and peeling paint showing the under layers became the in-thing. Now I can take pride in my old weathered and worn comfortable things that I find appealing, without feeling inferior to the upwardly mobile fashion conscious crowd. Not that it worries me what people think now that I have my ego subdued and under control.

Nature's art.

Nature’s art.

At twenty I worried about these things, at forty I lost interest in what they thought, at sixty I realized no one was even noticing me, at eighty I am pleased if people smile at the way I dress so I wear what is functional and comfortable.

Nature are is every where.

Nature’s art is everywhere.

Our friends will excuse our idiosyncrasies and we should not grieve over unjust criticism. Most of the things I worried about never happened. So is worrying a way to prevent misfortune happening?  I stopped worrying a long time ago and the answer is worrying does not help in any way.

Their passing is beautiful.

Their passing is beautiful.

I genuinely like things that Mother Nature has aged, mellowed and softened. Perhaps it is because it reminds us that all things are impermanent and wanting this to be otherwise can only bring sorrow.

Castles are gone the old dog remains.

Castles are gone the old dog remains.

The child builds castles of sand the tide comes in, the child cries, that is one of the first lessons nothing lasts. Childhood passes also, have we learned we cannot cling to impermanent things. The flower blooms, fades and dies, the brilliant sunset fades into the dark night.

Past Reflections.

Past Reflections.

Nature’s lessons teach us not to cling and hoard but to freely share. The truth may well be, though I am well past my use by date, I still feel useful and am pleased I have not been discarded as worthless. I live in the now, sharing the good before it passes into infinity.

A beautiful fraim of a picture.

A beautiful frame for a picture.

There needs to be balance as one can get too fond of old things. I worked with a bloke; he was built like a brick chicken coop, but gentle as washing up liquid. One day to attract his attention I pulled on his shirt and a button popped off under the strain. The passive, massive man turned on me like a wounded buffalo, eyes flashing like hazard lights on a road train. He took off his shirt and tossed it on the floor shouting “You have wrecked my shirt!” “Sorry mate, I did not mean to, it’s an old shirt.” I should not have said it was old. “I’ve had that shirt since I was an apprentice, I only wear it on special occasions now.” He raved on about the places he wore that shirt, wakes and weddings, sporting events and music festivals. It took a lot of diplomatic bull dung to calm him down. Actually I did not say a word. I let him call me names that indicated I was far from dexterous and my mother let her heart rule her head. I used this opportunity to practice my exercise on staying calm under pressure. The fire burned down the pot went off the boil, he turned and left.

Dramatic departure.

Dramatic departure.

Next day I saw him and gave him back his shirt washed, ironed and with a new golden button in place of the lost one. I explained how sorry I was and returned his repaired shirt. He smiled and said he regretted losing his temper over an old shirt. “No worries the new button can remind you nothing lasts forever.” I said. He put out his hand in a gesture of friendship. I shook his hand and the rest of me stopped shaking. I felt so relieved and happy, over the moon as they say. I felt like laughing, so jokingly said “You were lucky I did not lose my temper too or you would have been in trouble.”  “Yes, I would have been up on a man slaughter charge.” He replied. We both cracked up laughing. It is so simple just do the right thing and you have no worries.
