They look pretty but not Chinese.

They look pretty but not Chinese.

It is a shame if you are a sham.

Something looks strange.

Something looks strange.

For true recognition drop the act, be your self. Pretending to be something you are not is not a good idea. Because we can not take the credit, the applause go to the actor. We know we are pretending and we can not deceive our self. We can not accept a complement when we know we do not deserve it. We have to earn it to enjoy it.

Pick the poser.

Pick the poser.

To be trusted we have to be trustworthy and honest. To be respected we must be respectable. To be loved we must give love. Our lives are a reflexion of ourself.

This is a genuine father on act.

This is a genuine father and son.

All the acting, the splendid performance, is for nothing when we know we are not the hero. We know when we are a minor part of a performance, we need to get real.

You are all mixed up pretending.

You are all mixed up pretending.

Our ego is the villian in the act, wanting those applause by fair means or foul. The ego is not really you and when you realise this the acting ends. Reality takes place, no more stage props are needed. The powder and paint, the fancy garments are not necessary. We can be our self and relax. All the costly stage props advertised to tempt our ego are unnecessary. We are free to make our own choices of what we need. Not what a greedy ego wants as a status symbol.

No one is putting on an act when we go to the beach.

No one is putting on an act when we go to the beach.

Being an actor is not an easy job. It is like being a politician. You have to learn your lines and be in the limelight under the public scrutiny. All the publicity and hype can be overwhelming. Just too much for the ego that now cries out for peace and quiet.

The ego can never be satisfied whether it gets what it wants or not, it is unsatisfied.

Mobile phone puts a hold on quiet time.

Mobile phone puts a hold on quiet time.

We need quiet time to appreciate the beauty of reality, to clear our mind of worrying thoughts that disrupt our contentment. Time to chew on wholesome words and savour them. If they are greedily gobbled down their nourishment is lost.

This is more like it.

This is more like it.

Slow down, life is not an action movie full of turbulence. With understanding it can be an enjoyable, true love story. Not an unreal, hectic TV romance. That is not what we need, we need the real thing. It is no good acting, you have to honestly carry out those noble deeds. That is what is needed to get true joy in life.

Where is the Answer?

If I believed in miracles I would pray, the unanswered prayer, peace on earth and good will to all mankind.

My quiet tranquil hide away.

My quiet tranquil hide away.

If I were a believer in the patriarchal God I would spend Jesus’s birthday in a secluded quiet place, calm and relaxed, paying thanks to my God for the natural wonders surrounding me. No matter what your beliefs are, being thankful, sharing and appreciating nature’s free gifts is a stress free way to spend every day.

There is serenity here also.

There is serenity here also.

From all the accounts I have read Jesus was a kind compassionate pacifist. I really do not think he would appreciate the frantic way many of his followers are celebrating his birthday. He would be appalled at the way our commercial society has capitalised on his birthday.

Just because I cannot bring myself to believe in miracles does not stop me from appreciating those that sincerely do believe. I still respect a person that follows an ethical path of loving kindness like Jesus exemplified.

Those that feel the need to visit loved ones during the festive season drive curiously, cautiously and carefully. To those that feel obligated to give gifts, be wise in what you can afford. Those with a weight problem, have the will power to show restraint. All things in moderation, never forget alcohol is a criminal, safe till it escapes from the bottle.

Think, Question and Act.

A fan or a follower of Buddha.

A fan or a follower of Buddha.

I was born into a Christian family, had my parents been Muslims I would have read the Koran instead of the Bible. The omnipotent, supreme creator endowed me with a questioning mind. Therefore I questioned the patriarchal religions handed down from Abraham. I had no faith in miracles I wanted more factual evidence. Why would an all-knowing God put a tree of knowledge at Adam and Eves disposal, tell them not to eat the fruit, knowing they would? God does work in mysterious ways and it is probably good that he does or I would be, naked as Lady Godiva, living off nature’s garden, just like the indigenous people, before the white missionaries arrived.

Lao Tzu, is credited with the “Tao Te Chan,” a book the Taoist follow. Translated versions of Lao Tzu’s words have obscured some of the sage’s message. He writes about the Tao the inexplicable power that keeps the universe in equilibrium, He said “The Tao that can be described is not the real Tao.” Could this inexplicable power, be the unanswerable answer to mans search for God? “Wu–wie!” Is that the “Way”? Another Taoist idea is Yin Yang explaining the relationship and balance of all things.

The Hindus have one God but to accommodate everyone he can appear as any deity one desires. Consequently there is an incredible number of Hindu gods and Hinduism has a lot of other complex things that are hard to fathom but there is a wealth of wisdom and goodness to be found in Bhagavad Gita.

Buddha was a wise man his ethical ‘Eight Fold Path’ is worth following. He was only interested in finding a way out of life’s pain and suffering. After he died his teaching became a religion, to qualify as a religion a God is needed. It was then that Siddhartha was promoted by some of his followers. Buddhism spread and picked up other local myths and beliefs making finding useful wisdom difficult.

Major dogmas agree on the basic principles promoting good and not killing their fellow-man, some beliefs extend that to all sentient beings. To focus on what we agree on and not arguing would allow us to progress in harmony. Replacing fear with understanding, hate with kindness. Then the ordinary citizen would not be manipulated by the greedy that profit from war, they make the armaments that destroy and then prosper from rebuilding.

I will not accept any religion that condones war and intolerance. The Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama or the ‘Sage of the Shakyas”, was a pacifist. He never entered into the creation debate. The Buddha was like a doctor, interested in finding a cure for pain and suffering. He first found the cause of the suffering. Then he prescribes a cure. The causes he outlined in “The Four Noble Truths”. He prescribed a cure “The Eight Fold Path”, a logical self disciplined guide to reach the ultimate goal of enlightenment. If practiced diligently peace and contentment is attained. In Buddhist term Novena, described in English as perfect peace and understanding or total enlightenment.

Buddhism was borne out of Hinduism. The Buddha and his teaching are shrouded in myth, time has distorted and added to his words of wisdom. Buddha’s philosophy has become a religion. Buddhism spread to China and other lands. China added ideas of *Confucius, the Tao and ancestral worship. Buddhism has become much like other religions, a group of revered leaders arguing about technicalities irrelevant to ethics. They are more concerned with their authority and power than peace and contentment.

Sincerity and practice are more important than the dogma. The helpful, benevolent action the belief inspires is what matters most. We all need a guide to follow to find peace. Do not let your guiding belief be distorted by fear, greed or hate.

We all are guilty.

Stop and think.

Stop and think.

Sometimes I am like a sham shaman, other times I am sincere, just like you, to my own self I am true. If life is a stage truth is not an issue it is the acting that matters. Speech is ‘the gift of the gab’ they say, action is what matters. An actor said “Sincerity is of the utmost importance; once you can fake sincerity you achieve top billing.” I would add “You are then a star, a role-model for the naive to emulate.” To recognize the fake, the young and green need to mature. Immature people are influenced by celebrities and stars and the parts they play. In both cases antisocial behavior is made to look acceptable and clever. In life everyone should be authentic and play their part to the best of their ability and set a good example.

On stage doing their thing.

On stage doing their thing.

To put it another way, ‘This above all, to thine own self be true. And it must follow as the night the day. Thou can’st not be false to any man.’ A father’s advice to his son as quoted in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. All the world’s a stage, whether it is ‘as you like it’ or not, and men and women are merely players: I agree with William ‘they come and go; and one man plays many parts in his life.’ On stage acting matters but in life sincerity is of the utmost importance. My father’s advice was “Talk’s cheap, it takes money to buy whisky.” We need a bright and noble star to emulate. As an example that helps us act honorable to the best of our ability.

Sham or shaman, Taoist, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Christian, Muslim or any one of their innumerable branches does not matter to me. It is the sincerity of their actions that I focus on and it is not the action in its self that matters it is the intention of the action. A doctor cuts, a butcher cuts, the same action with a different intention. Criticism can be meant as helpful advice or to hurt. Knowing the difference takes calm deliberation and wisdom. All the above mentioned beliefs contain some wisdom and a lot of out dated stupidity. To play our part to the best of our ability we need to be unbiased and learn from all the best of the best role-models whether mystic or scientist, Philosopher or priest. Sorting out the facts from the fiction and the useful from the pointless that is the challenge.

They are doing it their way.

They are doing it their way.

The skin of a banana is discarded what we value is the nourishing food it contains. Behind the clouds the sun shines, and when we understand, we realize the clouds also have their uses. Things are not always as clear as a cloudless sky or as easy to peel as a banana. Like the weather all things are subject to change. Understanding the complex nature of life is one of life’s greatest challengers. Understanding the value hidden behind the worthless takes an open mind and patience, combined with study and practice.

Put to better use.

Put to better use.

Some things from the past are useful other ancient things are obsolete. Who today uses a cut-throat razor to shave with? But there are many out dated beliefs from the past we still cling to. Some of these beliefs are more dangerous than a cut-throat razor. Science has given us a longer and easier life full of wonderful inventions. Believing the world was made for man to exploit is why these inventions are misused. We mistakenly blame science, believing we need to get back to the good old days. What is needed is to stop the greed and the wasteful destruction and share these gifts rather than abuse and fight over them.

Life is not a stage, we are not play acting. We need to stop the play acting and be genuine. Buying not what we want but only what we need. Do not support people in power, both political and religious that are promoting fear and greed. We need people who promote caring and sharing. Sensible leaders are needed that promote conservation and sustainable energy production. Religious people argue about things that happened thousands of years ago. Our personal undivided attention needs to be directed to peace. War causes heart ache and devastation to the planet. Science can turn our down ward spiral around if we each do our individual part. To thine own self be true and it will follow as the night the day. Thou can’st not be false to any man. This means questioning our actions, mindful of how we as individuals are abusing our fellow man and nature.
