This lets you know where we are.

This lets you know where we are.

Am I a Buddhist?

Pauline in action.

Pauline in action.

Pauline’s post about Watt Buddharangsee, meaning Move or Change Places Temple, prompted me to think, All schools of Buddhism have the basic logical (Dharma) teachings of The Buddha. The Four Noble Truths and The Eightfold Path.

This photo shows the wheel with eight spokes.

This shrine shows the wheel with eight spokes.

The countries of South East Asia that have adopted Buddhism have incorporated their own cultures and customs in it. This resulted in many different varieties of Buddhism.

Inside the Stupa.

Still the fundamental teachings are the same. To abstain from all kinds of evil, promote all that is beneficial and purify the mind.

Stupa out side.

Stupa out side.

To understand all things are impermanent and subject to change, abstain from all kinds of evil and personally develop ethical behaviour, as outlined in the Buddha’s basic teaching. Consequently there have been no major conflicts between different Buddhist religious groups.

Pauline put this photo in her post.

The three major Abrahamic religions conversely are in aggressive conflict for domination. Regardless of the fact that their God, the one they claim to be almighty, condemns killing.

Why is this abandoned little church?

Why is this little church abandoned?

Perhaps Lau Tzu had it right when he said “The Tao that can be named is not the true Tao.” (The Tao is the inexplicable force that keeps the whole cosmos in equilibrium.) Another aspect of Taoism is yin and yang, when yin and yang are in balance it is believed to be perfect harmony. This is described as Wu Wei meaning in flow with nature.

The trees were an ideal setting for the Stupa.

The trees were an ideal setting for the Stupa.

I am not a Taoist, Buddhist, Hindu and defiantly not one of the many factions of the Abrahamic dogmas, Jews, Christians or Muslims with their multitude of denomination all arguing for dominance.

The trees looked good from all angles.

The trees looked good from all angles.

I believe they all have the same good basic ethics but much of the good is lost in the belief in the supernatural, other myths and wishful thinking.

My foot in on a wonderful world.

My foot in on a wonderful world.

Tolerance and respect..

on Newtons recommendation I am off to see the sea.

On Newtons recommendation I am off to see the sea.

I am not as clever as some may think so writing my blog is a challenge. Everything I write has been picked up from other people. Throughout my working career I took notice of those with the knowhow. Also I learned the value of nonfiction books. In recreational activities every skill that would help me in what I was trying to achieve, I would swat up on. No one can claim to be a self-made man.

As Sir Isaac Newton in 1679 is quoted as saying in a letter to Robert Hooke, “If I have seen further than others it was by standing on the shoulders of giants.” A similar observation was made earlier in 1159 by John of Salisbury in a book, written in Latin translated as. “We are like dwarfs sitting on the shoulders of giants.”

I am so fortunate.

I am so fortunate.

So we have a lot to thank those that showed us the way. Lau Tzu showed me one Way, Buddha showed me another Path. My belief is, whatever religious differences we have, we must practice tolerance and respect for others beliefs. Even if we cannot accept it all, there will be a lot we can agree on.

All major religions preach loving kindness, morality and generosity. If we have faith in a God we should show our faith by keeping his commandments and not take over the divine reins of life and death. If you have faith and trust there is no need to take over this responsibility. Let your God do the driving, you have not got a licence to kill. This would be the right way to promote your religion.

Writing my blog required me to revise my ideas and rethink everything. This gave me a clearer understanding in my own mind. Owing to practically no schooling the English language was another learning curve. A blog is a lot more difficult than a job report. Even then I always had a dictionary on hand.

Clear water at Tallebudgera Creek bridge.

Clear water at Tallebudgera Creek bridge.

There is an incident that demonstrates this. At a meeting one of the engineers criticised my spelling. I immediately replied “I will scribble my report in future then the spelling will be less of a problem.” His writing was as difficult to decipher as a doctor’s prescription.

Everything changes look at the sky.

My blog helps me improve in more ways than one. Everything I decide to do is a benefit to me. If reading my blog inspires others to follow what I have found beneficial, that is a bonus.

On rush if it rains before I get home, it is not cold.

No rush if it rains before I get home, it is not cold.

That prompts another quote, from Little John Salisbury.”One who comprehends truth is wise. One who loves truth is good. One who orders his life by truth is happy”.

Selfies are in fashion.

Selfies are in fashion.

Buddhism reminds us of a universal truth “Everything is subject to change.” Aware of that truth will help you improve your happiness. As you will accept change and not cling to passing things.

There is a lot I still have to pick up, while wandering along the vast ocean seashore. That is a more enjoyable pass-time than blogging. The sun is shining the surf is rolling in I am on my bike to enjoy these gifts of nature , have a nice day see you later.

A few windows at Surfers Paradise.

I am an insignificant speck of dust on one of the many windows of this world. A world that is only a dust mite, orbiting in a ray of sunlight, compared to our galaxy of billions of stars. I am a short sounding noise made to attract attention, only a beep in cosmic time.

Droplets of moisture show up the suns rays the same as dost mites.

Droplets of moisture show up the suns rays the same as do dust mites.

Not realising our place in the big picture. We want to be the star attraction, taking a major role on the stage of life. We are taught our lines and how to play our part. This education fits us for our part in life’s socioeconomic drama.

Some never learn.

Some never learn.

Education teaches us what to think, not how to think. Learning from experience, gives us more than telling the time by the clock on the wall, the sun is a clock and compass. It can give us direction and tell us when to rise and retire. The sun shows the way to see the big picture in all its natural warmth and wonder.

Why not enjoy this wondrous world. There is no need to buy a chronometer to get synchronised to compete in the nine to five race of the humans or measure the fleeting moments left in our life.

What are you hurrying to, is the destination paradise? If that is what you have been indoctrinated to believe. It may comfort you to think you can depart this world, with its greed, hate and religious arguments, to an existence of eternal boredom. As they say, “ignorance is bliss.”

Montage of Religions.

When religion was invented no one was aware of the electromagnetic spectrum, which includes, in order of increasing frequency and decreasing wavelength: radio waves, microwaves, inferred radiation, visible light, ultraviolet radiation, x-ray and gamma rays. Yet they say “I’ve seen the light.” These kind people that have “seen the light” may want to share this light with you. These evangelists are good people not evil they are doing what they think right. Like people water sometimes gets polluted but if the impurities are removed the water is pure. Trouble starts when others try to remove, what they think are impurities in people of a different belief or put out their ‘lights.”

Physics is the general analysis of nature, conducted to understand how the universe works. Philosophy comes from the Greek word, (Philia) meaning “to love” or “befriend” and (Sophia) meaning “wisdom”. Socrates used the word philosophy to mean a search for wisdom. It has a much wider meaning today. It now includes the theory of everything and has specialised branches. As no one can know it all, except a “know all”.

Who is responsible for this Native Australian Hibiscus.

There is only one “know all” and we have been arguing on who that “know all” is through our history.

Who’s argument are we going to accept. Science has given us all the technology we have today. People in their ignorance often abuse the technology, do not condemn science for that. Religion has given us nothing but arguments. A believer, in a religion is not evil, it is their dogmatic beliefs that create evil. Ocean water is drinkable if the salt is removed.

What a wonderful world.

What a wonderful world.

When we talk of God first we must define which God. Discussing religion, find out what religion and what branch, school or denomination. There are so many it is no wonder they argue among themselves.

What would I know, I would wait to be attacked, then run away, rather than fight. Fighting would be my last resource. Most animals only fight if they are attacked, or their home invaded and kill for food to survive. I have faith that people are not borne sinful or bad. They become corrupted by greed and hate. I feel safe in believing people are like any other animal. Give them respect.

They all say like Superman fighting for truth and justice.

You need facts not fiction.

That burka could be hiding a weapon of mass destruction.

That burka could be hiding a weapon of mass destruction.

What has caused our disagreements and arguments? Our problems stem from ignorance and they continue because of ignorance. Other defilements such as wanting possessions, power and position over others also play a big part.

The indigenous people of Australian needed nothing more than to be hunter gatherers.

The indigenous people of Australian needed nothing more than to be hunter gatherers.

Primitive man was ignorant of the causes of the elements that controlled his survival. Animism was an attempt to explain, the sun and rain and all the elements affecting his survival. This gave birth to shamans and witch- doctors, clever, devious people that claimed they could communicate with the e spirits world. This gave them standing and power in the tribe.

Australian Aborigines understood nature and had no need of technology.

Australian Aborigines understood nature and had no need of technology.

This was in the time of the hunter gathers as man progressed to domesticating animals and cultivating crops he became less nomadic. Villages grew and man became more reliant on the clever ones to lead them.

They had their paradise taken over.

They had their paradise taken over.

Cities and civilisations were formed. A clever leader created gods and raised taxes to build temples and idols of their gods. Many gods were created to meet all occasions. A hierarchy of priests invented dogmas controlling the people with fearful gods. Sultans and kings consulted the priests on how to manage their people.

Tens of thousands of years is said they lived in harmony with nature.

Tens of thousands of years it is beleived they lived in harmony with nature.

Having many gods caused discord in the community, as it does to this day. Abraham united his people by giving them a vengeful jealous all powerful god that would not allow worship of other gods. Although the Jews were his chosen people they have been homeless and persecuted throughout history.

Suwon a walled city South Korea 30 km from Seoul.

Suwon a walled city South Korea 30 km from Seoul.

Strong walls were necessary to protect crops from animal invasion backed up with armies, to protect the wealth of prestigious rulers and their religious priests. Many rulers were psychopaths. All were sick some proclaiming Divine right some claiming to actually be gods. Greed ruled as it does to this day. Greed goes with ignorance, as wisdom is followed by peace and contentment.

This is not a rescue helicopter.

This is not a rescue helicopter.

Knowledge is not synonymous with wisdom, knowledge gave man bronze, iron, steel, gunpowder and the atom bomb. The technology we have today all came from knowledge. Technology allowed the powerful to invade, plunder, dominate and take control of other countries. Technology correctly used benefits man, but the ignorant abuse it. Wisdom must be practiced in the use of technology.

Modern technology terribly abused, sign in war museum Canberra.

Modern technology terribly abused, sign in war museum Canberra.

That very brief outline of the history of man, if taken seriously and followed up by diligent research, from proven sauces, will contribute to enlightenment. Feeding the mind on nourishing wholesome food is the way to bring peace into our life. There are still foolish people that believe witch-doctors and cunning leaders. These gullible people are not evil it is what they accept without question that is evil.

It is just the way the cads fall.

It is just the way the cards fall.

Note you may like to look at Pauline’s post first as the photos relate to it.

The master plan.

I am the one made them fall this way.

I am the one made them fall this way.

The wisdom of the sages

passed down through the ages.

Still we do not know,

Love is the way to go.

It is not too bad at all.

It is not too bad at all.

Man could not explain,

the sunshine and the rain.

Only Gods could know,

so they were made to show.

These photos are not related to this post.

These photos are not related to this post.

The perplexing mystery of all creation,

was solved by gods from every nation.

Then the arguments began,

who had the correct plan.

Ironic my previous post was 'Enjoy Your Trip.

Ironic my previous post was ‘Enjoy Your Trip.

To keep control it would seem,

One God must be made supreme.

His foot prints in the sands of time,

Can appear to this day as sublime.

I put a photo in it titled ' We Do not know what pain is.'

I put a photo in it titled ‘ We Do not know what pain is.’

Mother Nature still exists,

though patriarchal Gods persist.

The puzzle still remains today,

Can science now show the way?

It is true I was given Penthrox Inhaler and later Brufin pill and water.

It is true I was given Penthrox Inhaler and later Brufin pills and water.

Or will technology be used to fight,

to see who’s God is in the right.

All the good we have today

Could be just blown away.

I am now ok the pain has gone away.

I am now ok the pain has gone away.

Appreciation, love and trust,

in today’s world it is a must.

Ignorance, greed, fear and hate,

Mother Nature will not tolerate.

Pauline told you of my strife, now sparkle is back in my life.

Pauline told you of my strife, now the sparkle is back in my life.

Mother Nature is eternally sublime.

Man is mortal and will pass on in time.

A grain of sand or the starry sky,

it will not matter as time passes by.

I reminded her to record drama, as it was related to my Dharma.

I reminded her to record the drama, as it was related to my Dharma.

All the blood sweat and tears,

all our stupid arguments and fears.

Why waste our time on pie in the sky?

When it is only a few years before we die.

I am back at the Gym, trying to keep in trim.

I am back at the Gym, trying to keep in trim.

Do not cry, we never die, we only change.

Atoms never destruct they only rearrange.

We may turn into dust mites floating on the morning breeze,

or into song birds singing in the tall green trees.

Jack and Tim at the Gym.

Let us prepare here today,

to live our life in a better way.

Caring and sharing in peace and calm.

Natures beautiful gifts.

Natures beautiful gifts.

Those of little faith.

Natures abstract art.

Natures abstract art.

For those with faith and true sincerity,

That do good and noble deeds for charity.

Whose kindness, caring and compassion

are distributed in a generous fashion.

My words are not meant to offend.

I would rather have you as a friend.

As you are honest and do not tell lies.

I must also be honest not to be despised.

The shapes of nature.

The shapes of nature.

 You may think my words untrue;

I leave the judgement up to you.

I don’t believe in a God made to look like me.

That bribes us with promises of eternity.

So I am barred from heaven for this alone.

By an Almighty God that makes it known.

He is jealous and revengeful as well,

sending non-believers off to hell.

Man tries his hand,

Man tries his hand,

Threatening our kids will suffer too,

for the misdeeds that we do.

I don’t want to go to a boring heaven.

Where there’s peace and quiet 24/7

Those that do believe I implore,

don’t wreck my world with your holy war.

This is the only heaven I know,

there is no other place for me to go.

Wonders abound.

Wonders abound.

Don’t argue about things beyond your understanding.

To be good you don’t need commanding.

Enjoy a simple life, free from arguments and strife.

Appreciate the gifts in the here and now.

That is the only present anyhow.

Trees show wounds..

Trees show wounds..

To look after the gifts take conscious care.

No greed or hate, we must love and share.

I do not care what God you chose.

I am not walking in your shoes.

If I were standing were you stand.

I would more likely understand.

No one is evil in my learning book.

It is only the wrong path they took,

The shadow of the leaves.

The shadow of the leaves.

Jews, Christians, Muslims as well.

Their family feud makes life a hell.

They make up stories to understand,

What is beyond the intellect of man.

Sculptured by Mother Nature.

Sculptured by Mother Nature.

Hebrew then Greeks and revised many times. Who knows The Bibles original lines.

The Koran is written in Arabic.

Translating it for me is quite a trick.

Why argue and fight who is wrong and who is right.

The supreme God made one command, everyone should understand.

This is Gods will, thou shall not kill.

Trees bleed too.

More Dreams.

Fair dinkum Aussies we met in Katherine N.T.

Fair dinkum Aussies we met in Katherine N.T.

The Australian Aborigines speak of their ‘Dream Time’ of the serpent and creation. In the light of day their dreams were shattered, they were forced to step from hunter gathers into a modern age. In a few generations technology has advanced rapidly and everyone is finding it hard to manage the transition. Few have any understanding of how the indigenous people are struggling to cope with their crushed dreams.

The Buddha’s aim was to relieve suffering in the world. He explained the universal truth that all things are passing and subject to change.  This is the cause of dukkah, a Pali word that has no precise synonym, in English we loosely translate it as pain and suffering. The Buddha prescribed a cure for suffering by following  eight steps.

Pauline reads a sad reminder of History.

Pauline reads a sad reminder of History.

The Eightfold Path or The Middle Way is a way of moderation, a philosophy that can be practiced in conjunction with other religions.  Because of it being compatible with other beliefs the Buddha’s teachings are now associated with religions and local myths from other countries. There are many schools of Buddhism just as there are many branches and denominations of other religions. The below teaching I have outlined is fundamental to all schools of Buddhism. If you incorporate these steps with your beliefs your life will improve.

A Chinese representation of The Buddha.

A Chinese representation of The Buddha.

This is a self-disciplined guide, to become a better person.

Right understanding, Is understanding the true nature of life, realising all things change and cannot be clung to, is the beginning of right understanding.

Right thoughts, are kind, caring and compassionate thoughts.

Right speech, is honest, considerate and not harsh.

Right actions, are a benefit to all sentient beings.

Right livelihood, is to earn our livelihood in a decent, helpful way not a destructive way.

Right effort, is a matter of doing your best.

Right concentration, meditation is training in concentration and mind control.

Right mindfulness is to be aware of your thoughts and emotions.

A very impressive representation of The Buddha.

A very impressive representation of The Buddha.

These are not commandments they are a guide to self-disciplines, the goal to self-betterment, a path to peace and contentment in a troubled world. The Buddha’s philosophy became a religion after his death, as it spread to other countries their folk laws and myths were added.  Many different branches of Buddhism developed, a hierarchy debating over their differences. With all the complex religious ritual and added myths the basic path has been obscured.  The result is the basic philosophy Buddha taught, The Four Noble Truths and The Eightfold Path, is often neglected. Buddhists need to wake up.

Once a belief becomes an organised religion it is lost in a power struggle for converts.

Image result for tell him he's dreaming the castle

“Tell Him He’s Dreaming.”

Image result for tell him he's dreaming the castle

When someone makes an outrageous claim we say ‘tell him he’s dreaming.’   In an Australian movie called “The Castle.” A habit of one of the son’s was searching the sales in the local Trade and Exchange paper. When he found a bargain he would ask for his father’s advice. His father would enquire how much and then say,” Tell him he’s dreaming.” The movie got a cult following, it was so typically Aussie humour. If you have the time and enjoy the kind of humour inherent of English comedy see “The Castle”. When the father was given a gift he always said, “This is going straight to the pool-room,” Where he kept all his prize possessions.  If you give an Aussie a gift and he says, “This is going straight to the pool-room. “, you will know he is grateful. But tell him he is dreaming and you are saying he is unrealistic.

A good place to rest.

A good place to rest.

Yet many still believe in dreams, why do some still cling to the impossible? We desire a favourable outcome that is why we have faith in dreams. Facing up to the hard reality that all things are impermanent is too devastating. We would rather live with a dream than face the reality of impermanence.  If believing in a book of dreams helps you that is good. As long as you do not despise those who have a different book of dreams.

‘The Da Vinci Code’, a book by Dan Brown, was made into a movie. Let us suppose this book came to him in a dream. Would we then assume it was the word of god and Dan Brown was a prophet?  Would it be listed under religion in a category of its own or under non-fiction?

A beautiful inspiration.

A beautiful inspiration.

How can we be sure of what happened around two thousand years BC, around the time of Abraham? From what I have read, and the many movies made by Cecil. B. De Mille, Abraham wanted his people to give up their belief in an array of gods and accepting his monolithic god with the purpose of uniting them as a people. That formed the basis of the Abrahamic religion’s of today. Abraham made his god ‘The Almighty God’ the god that stated, in his second commandment, that he was a jealous god to be feared.

It is all good with the right attitude.

It is all good with the right attitude.

This post is going to be like sailing a small boat into stormy waters. Some sailing with me may decide not to take the voyage. Others, with courage, open minds and curiosity, will stay with me. I do not want to hurt you, or lead you astray. I only want to open your eyes to other possibilities and to realise in time all things change, and have changed beyond belief since ancient time. Some things may still be good practices, others are useless hindrances that give us nothing and are a burden, like unessential junk when traveling.

You don't need a lot to be happy.

You don’t need a lot to be happy.

Things did not go as Abraham had planned, but this was good material for films. Cecil. B. De Mille was quoted as saying. “Give me two pages of the bible and I will give you a motion picture.” C.B. De Mille made some colossal movies using Bible stories. ‘The Sign of the Cross’ 1932, “Cleopatra”, Claudette Colbert made a splash in the film when she bathed in ass’s milk. There has been more recent movie actress’s to play the part of Cleopatra, Elisabeth Taylor was great and in Technicolor. I was an impressionable boy when I saw the rerun of Claudette Colbert in the old version, she haunted my youthful dreams. “The Crusades”, David and Goliath”, “The Passion of Christ “made De Mille a lot of money but I think he lost on “Sodom and Gomorra”. “The Ten Commandments” was a winner.

Charlton Heston played Moses in Cecil B DeMille's 1956 version of 'The Ten Commandments'

God should have given Abraham the Ten Commandments, in my opinion, but it is calculated about five hundred years passed before the Ten Commandments were given to Moses, amid a display of pyrotechnics put on by Mount Sinai. The Ten Commandments were supposed to make man law-abiding. Our judicial laws today are based on them. Somehow this has not worked; perhaps it conflicted with empowering man with freewill. If everyone could agree on one dream there would be no problems. But people of different cultures have different dreams, and debate on whose dream is the best. They argue over technicalities, they fight over whose dream to follow, so the outcome of religious dreams can lead to disaster. It can also be a great comfort.

Simply beautiful.

Simply beautiful.

My quiet tranquil hide away.

My quiet tranquil hide away.

If I were a believer in the patriarchal God I would spend Jesus’s birthday in a secluded quiet place, calm and relaxed, paying thanks to my God for the natural wonders surrounding me. No matter what your beliefs are, being thankful, sharing and appreciating nature’s free gifts is a stress free way to spend every day.

There is serenity here also.

This post is for me, to get it off my chest so to speak. I am upset with our politicians. Tony Abbott our Prime Minister has us gun-runners to the Kurds. John Howard got us involved in the mess in Iraq about twelve years ago and it has been festering ever since. It will do no good, there has been bloody religious wars for ages, they never learn.

Names of the dead line both sides above the pool.

Names of the dead line both sides above the pool.

The Abrahamic God had no wife. He was playing by himself with himself when he made man, in his own image, out of mud and he has been playing war games with us ever since. Is this an ego trip he is having or did man with his big ego make God in his likeness?

The Unknown Soldier.

The Unknown Soldier.

Without fur or feathers man has to fight to survive, to cloth himself in a harsh environment. Without the eyes of an eagle or cat, nose of a dog or the superior senses of other animals. Using his mind he has invented the equivalent abilities, man now thinks himself a God.

Red paper poppies by the names of recent dear.

Red paper poppies and the names of recent dead.

There is something inexpressible beyond man’s comprehension keeping everything in the cosmos in equilibrium, that man is upsetting with his Abrahamic godlike attitude. Regardless of mortal man it will restore itself. It is eternal and has all the time and patience to outlast man.

Right and wrong.

Right and wrong.

This world is good, but man wants more. God has heaven this is supposed to be perfect, something for man to look forward to, if he is invited.

Peace is what in wanted.

Peace is what is wanted.

If man obeys, for this god tells us he is a vengeful god. 20: 2-6 (esv)

Another mistake, will they never learn.

Another mistake, will they never learn.

Apparently god was not all knowing when he created the earth or he would not have put that tree in the garden and commanded Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit. Or maybe he was all-knowing and realised all good stories need drama. The Bible is a great story with plenty of drama, sex and violence. May be he thought the plot needed a bit of nudity and fig leaves would add to the curiosity.

Thanks for risking your life.

Vietnam should have taught us better how to look after our garden.

People with righteous intentions arguing, protesting, supplying weapons and fighting wars will never find peace. Peace is found only in loving kindness. Without asking the people politicians take violent action.
