It is all out there.

It is all out there.

Give me a Wave.

Go for it.

Go for it.

To navigate through the World Wide Web, is called ‘surfing the web’ or spending time on the Internet. Cyberspace is like a vast ocean. So surfing the net is an appropriate metaphor. Surfing the ocean waves is physically good for you and surfing the Webb is a good mental exercise. Surfing the web is mentally surfing invisible waves.

Go for it in the library on the computer or real ocean waves.

Go for it in the library on the computer or real ocean waves.

To learn I read mostly nonfiction. Educational, do it yourself type books I struggled with what I called ‘heavy books’ they were like trying to read a foreign language. I found a dictionary helpful but the going was a tedious slog.

We start small.

We start small.

One of my favourite subjects is happiness.

Have some fun and grow.

Have some fun and grow.

Every book I saw pertaining to happiness I would read, this took me into the motivational and psychology shelves of the library.

going for it.

going for it.

Because I had travelled in Thailand and seen the effect Buddhism had on Thai people. They are educated in Buddhism and are honest, friendly, happy people. That got me interested in South Eastern Asian philosophy. Then I branched into Greek philosophy. I had made an assumption about Greek philosophy because of their mythical supernatural gods and I had seen the fresco by Raphael of the ‘School of Athens’ when visiting the Vatican. This gave me a wrong idea seeing the Greek philosophers displayed in the Papal Palace where the Pope lives. Here is a link that is worth visiting if you are into art or philosophy or have an inquiring mind. https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/renaissance-reformation/high-ren-florence-rome/high-renaissance1/v/raphael-school-of-athens

getting into it.

getting into it.

One of the best happiness books was The Happiness Hypothesis, By Jonathan Haidt.

 To make you smile.

To make you smile.

Hypothesis I did not know what kind of herbal concoction it was, whether you smoked it or injected ¬†it. ūüėú Yes I was ignorant and when I surf the net I realise I am still not smart.

The monkey mind up to mischief.

The monkey mind up to mischief.

Since then I have learned a few things, I discovered Greek philosophers.

A great big wonderful world.

A great big wonderful world. Oakura NZ.

Their ideas, in most cases different to what I had assumed. Epicurus had a lot in common with Siddhartha Gautama, the original Buddha.

They are going for it every where there waves. Burleigh Qld.

They are going for it wherever there are waves. Burleigh Qld.

Now I Google a word I am unfamiliar with or can’t even pronounce, often one word leads to another and I get carried away on a wave, one link leading to another. Then I am really surfing, I come back to the book later.

This is it.

This is it.

Like surfing the ocean waves you are in the now, going with the flow. No paddling out through the white waves it is too easy, a pleasure for old surfers.

Don't worry about the horizon just enjoy the surfing.

My son Jason 1982, don’t worry about the horizon just enjoy surfing.

What can be achieved if we work at it.

What can be achieved if we work at it.

Weeding the Garden.

Pauline at work.

Pauline at work.

Every problem is an opportunity for growth. Life is a problem if we think what is taught in the school room is all we need to know. Learning should extend beyond the classroom. We must think for our self and look for facts to substantiate what we are told. We need more than blind faith in others.

Jack plaing in the garden.

Jack playing in the garden.

Weeds grow and flourish with no assistance from the gardener. In the garden of our mind weeds can thrive if we are not aware and constantly weeding out the unwanted negative thoughts.

Zen Garden ,note the tree shadow on the rock.

Zen Garden ,note the tree shadow on the rock.

Plant instead seeds of love, hope, peace and contentment. They will grow and produce medicine that will cure hate and despair and calming the stress in our life. Grow strong by planting good wholesome seeds.

Worker in Zen garden.

Focus your mind on good and feed good thoughts into your mind as everything you experience influences your mind either positively or negatively.

Zen green tranquillity.

Zen green tranquillity.

Distance yourself from the toxic poison, that is too plentiful, in the modern world.

Weeds are always trying to invade.

Weeds are always trying to invade.

In technical terms all the sensory perception you come in contact with affect the neural activity in your brain. Repeated experiences leave lasting changes in the brain. You could say repeated thoughts and actions form habits that can be beneficial or detrimental, depending on what you come in contact with.

Zigzagging bright contrast.

Zigzagging bright contrast.

To find happiness, peace and contentment you need to plant good seeds in the garden of your mind and repeatedly weed out weeds that are overrunning and destroying your beautiful, peaceful garden.

A feast for the eyes.

A feast for the eyes.

The underlying cause of all life’s wonders and woes, man has created or destroyed, all the joy or pain can be traced to what man has planted in his brain, the garden of his mind.

A joy to behold.

A joy to behold.

Over centuries of history man has planted mostly weeds in the garden of his mind. The seeds of ignorance, fear, greed and hate flourished. Ignorance created gods, fear created submission to shaman, witch doctors and priests that claimed they could communicate with a god or the gods. Greed, hate and ignorance flourished under these conditions till the renaissance.

A star for perfection.

A star for perfection.

These mistakes must be put behind us. We should think for ourselves not blindly believing comments from witch doctors, spin doctors, or media rubbish.

Nourishment from the garden.

Nourishment from the garden.

A point I made in my post ‘Elvis Lives’ shows one way to calculate the truth. Occam’s Razor is another problem solving principal that can be explained this way, ‘assume that the most straight forward or simplest explanation is the most likely to be the truth.’ I believe looking at people’s past history and their motives for making a statement helps make a correct decision on the value of their words.

The love of a garden...

The love of a garden…

Try to avoid most of the unsavoury, think and act positive. One suggestion is watch the news but not every time the same dreadful news is repeated. My wish is by keeping actively weeding you garden you harvest an abundance of nutrious vegetables, fruit and the flowers bloom in splendour.

is a garden of love.

Am I a Buddhist?

Pauline in action.

Pauline in action.

Pauline’s post about Watt Buddharangsee, meaning Move or Change Places Temple, prompted me to think,¬†All schools of Buddhism have the basic logical (Dharma) teachings of The Buddha. The Four Noble Truths and The Eightfold Path.

This photo shows the wheel with eight spokes.

This shrine shows the wheel with eight spokes.

The countries of South East Asia that have adopted Buddhism have incorporated their own cultures and customs in it. This resulted in many different varieties of Buddhism.

Inside the Stupa.

Still the fundamental teachings are the same. To abstain from all kinds of evil, promote all that is beneficial and purify the mind.

Stupa out side.

Stupa out side.

To understand all things are impermanent and subject to change, abstain from all kinds of evil and personally develop ethical behaviour, as outlined in the Buddha’s basic teaching. Consequently there have been no major conflicts between different Buddhist religious¬†groups.

Pauline put this photo in her post.

Pauline put this photo in her post.

The three major Abrahamic religions conversely are in aggressive conflict for domination. Regardless of the fact that their God, the one they claim to be almighty, condemns killing.

Why is this abandoned little church?

Why is this little church abandoned?

Perhaps Lau Tzu had it right when he said “The Tao that can be named is not the true Tao.” (The Tao is the inexplicable force that keeps the whole cosmos in equilibrium.) Another aspect of Taoism is yin and yang, when yin and yang are in balance it is believed to be perfect harmony. This is described as Wu Wei meaning¬†in flow with nature.

The trees were an ideal setting for the Stupa.

The trees were an ideal setting for the Stupa.

I am not a Taoist, Buddhist, Hindu and defiantly not one of the many factions of the Abrahamic dogmas, Jews, Christians or Muslims with their multitude of denomination all arguing for dominance.

The trees looked good from all angles.

The trees looked good from all angles.

I believe they all have the same good basic ethics but much of the good is lost in the belief in the supernatural, other myths and wishful thinking.

Walking .

Pauline & camera New Zealand.

Pauline & camera New Zealand.

Taking your camera for a walk is a great way to get you going, motivated to get out walking. A dog is another way. I see lots of happy dogs on my walks. They are loved and are not just kept as Guard dogs. Although some sensible ladies have a dog so they can do their jogging in secluded places in safety.

Surf Girl out to catch a wave.

Looking at statistics not many get molested out jogging it is the ones that are out late partying that run the bigger risk.

Letting the world catch up.

¬†Dogs enjoy exercise and thrive on love, who doesn’t? Dogs that miss out on love and exercise bark at every thing, so do humans.

Enjoy the view Mt Taronga.

Enjoy the view Mt Taronga.

¬†Other things I see are people meditating, fishing and taking their surf board out. There are lots of things to get one percolating. Art gets Zeebra going and Zeebra’s art got Pauline going and I go back into it too. I used to use my sketching to supplement the writing in my diary when I travelled. But the digital camera made it too easy.

Catching the sun rise.

Catching the sun rise.

¬†I have never been good at writing that is why the blog is good for me it helped improve my writing. Now having a sketch pad and pencil or a good book, not necessarily ‚Äúthe good book‚ÄĚ, is a good way to fill in time while waiting. Pauline’s art is really good she sold three at the exhibition the art group put on.¬† Only one of mine sold I think who ever bought it probably liked the subject.

Natures pictures get a lots of people going.

Nature’s pictures get a lot of people going on¬†Mt Maunganui.

They say you should dance like nobody is watching. Sing like no one can hear you and love like you have never been hurt, I changed the last line of that quote to, like there is no tomorrow. Well I draw like no one is going to see it except my friends. Friends always say kind things and who cares what the others say. Yet the critics can tell us where we are going wrong.

Worth the effort.

Worth the effort.

So do not get upset at criticism or annoyed when you hear a dog bark they are trying to tell us something. We should enjoy whatever we are doing it is all exercise that our body needs, now machines are doing all the heavy work and starting to do a lot of the pleasurable activity too. Technology can steel a lot of the craftsman-ship we once took pride in. Balance is needed in all we encounter.

Keeping fit the natural way, The Mount.

Keeping fit the natural way, The Mount.

I am wandering, ambling, straying off the walking path. It is human to err and not a big problem if once we realise we have been lead off the path we get back on the right path. I will never be lost because home is where I hang my hat.

My foot in on a wonderful world.

My foot in on a wonderful world.

Tolerance and respect..

on Newtons recommendation I am off to see the sea.

On Newtons recommendation I am off to see the sea.

I am not as clever as some may think so writing my blog is a challenge. Everything I write has been picked up from other people. Throughout my working career I took notice of those with the knowhow. Also I learned the value of nonfiction books. In recreational activities every skill that would help me in what I was trying to achieve, I would swat up on. No one can claim to be a self-made man.

As Sir Isaac Newton in 1679 is quoted as saying in a letter to Robert Hooke, ‚ÄúIf I have seen further than others it was by standing on the shoulders of giants.” A similar observation was made earlier in 1159 by John of Salisbury in a book, written in Latin translated as. “We are like dwarfs sitting on the shoulders of giants.”

I am so fortunate.

I am so fortunate.

So we have a lot to thank those that showed us the way. Lau Tzu showed me one Way, Buddha showed me another Path. My belief is, whatever religious differences we have, we must practice tolerance and respect for others beliefs. Even if we cannot accept it all, there will be a lot we can agree on.

For peace and harmony in the world today we need to meet on this neutral ground.

Looking from Burleigh Headland to Surfers Paradise.

Looking from Burleigh Headland to Surfers Paradise.

All major religions preach loving kindness, morality and generosity. If we have faith in a God we should show our faith by keeping his commandments and not take over the divine reins of life and death. If you have faith and trust there is no need to take over this responsibility. Let your God do the driving, you have not got a licence to kill. This would be the right way to promote your religion.

Looking south to Coolangatta.

Writing my blog required me to revise my ideas and rethink everything. This gave me a clearer understanding in my own mind. Owing to practically no schooling the English language was another learning curve. A blog is a lot more difficult than a job report. Even then I always had a dictionary on hand.

Clear water at Tallebudgera Creek bridge.

Clear water at Tallebudgera Creek bridge.

There is an incident that demonstrates this. At a meeting one of the engineers criticised my spelling. I immediately replied “I will scribble my report in future then the spelling will be less of a problem.” His writing was as difficult to decipher as a¬†doctor‚Äôs prescription.

Everything changes look at the sky.

Everything changes look at the sky.

My blog helps me improve in more ways than one. Everything I decide to do is a benefit to me. If reading my blog inspires others to follow what I have found beneficial, that is a bonus.

On rush if it rains before I get home, it is not cold.

No rush if it rains before I get home, it is not cold.

That prompts another quote, from Little John Salisbury.”One who comprehends truth is wise. One who loves truth is good. One who orders his life by truth is happy”.

Selfies are in fashion.

Selfies are in fashion.

Buddhism reminds us of a universal truth “Everything is subject to change.” Aware of that truth will help you improve your happiness. As you will accept change and not cling to passing things.

A gift from our garden.

A gift from our garden, a Walking Iris grows easy from a cutting.

There is a lot I still have to pick up, while wandering along the vast ocean seashore. That is a more enjoyable pass-time than blogging. The sun is shining the surf is rolling in I am on my bike to enjoy these gifts of nature , have a nice day see you later.

Book Inn..

Book Inn..

Slow down don’t slow up.

Lately I have been absorbed reading instead of writing. The books I have been reading have made me realise how little I know. And yet I am far more knowledgeable than I used to be, at least I now know how to enjoy life.

What else is it for?

What else is it for?

Knowing the unsatisfactory changing nature of life. I do not cling to things and am contented rather than happy. My lifelong goal is self improvement, acquiring knowledge rather than possessions.

I gave my copy away I went to the library revise.

I went to the library to read it again I gave my copy away.

I would describe this as contentment rather than happiness. Learning to appreciation the good in my life.

 To make you smile.

To make you smile.

Ignorance is the cause of unhappiness. To enjoy life one must be disciplined in doing what is necessary to stay healthy in both body and mind. The one thing we should not be ignorant of is nothing lasts. Everything has a use by date.

You may not buy this one it is a gift.

You may not buy this one it is a gift, complements of Buddhist society Malaysia.

We can prolong the life of things by maintaining them properly, then they will serve us well. To care for things we need the knowledge to know how. Over the years I have learned a few life skills.

It is no secret any more.

It is no secret any more.

I try to pass them on, but you can find better qualified writers than me. You just need to be very selective in sorting out whose opinion to follow. Is it fact or fiction, is it rubbish I am feeding my mind on? Both body and mind need wholesome nourishment to stay healthy.

1932 the bridge the hands I had to be in this photo.

1932 the bridge the hands and hope I had to be in this photo.

I am pleased how I am doing, keeping fit and inspiring others. They made me ‘member of the month’ at the¬†Burleigh, World Gym. I was requested to write this comment. I now am fitted out in really smart gym cloths all part of the honour.

The matador, no bull.

The matador, no bull.

“Who is the old bloke sweating on the x trainer?”world gym

“That is Jack he used to be a construction worker, a rigger to be precise.”

Great game for a young bloke to earn a crust. Plenty of exercise climbing up on the steel purlins, riding the crane hook. Man those were the days before the safety regulations took all the buzz out of it.

The problem is if you do a good job they promote you. Most of the fun goes out of it and it can get stressful.

Tim wants to be like me, when he has been 83 years at the gym.

Tim wants to be like me, when he has been 83 years at the gym.

The way around that is go to a gym and get rid of the stress. Get the endorphin circulating, it is better than chocolate. Oh! You see eye candy everywhere in a gym, a treat for every taste, the blokes and the girls. The great people that you become friends with in a gym like World Gym, Burleigh, is another incentive to workout.

Note the caption on the wall.

Note the caption on the wall.

I am 83 but when I am mixing in with all these positive, fit people I can forget I am past my use by date. Three score and ten I never put too much faith in ancient writing and doctors are ok in an emergency but do not leave it up to them to keep you fit. You are better of at the gym.

Furry nice blanket.

Furry nice blanket.

What do you want?

She was drawing a heart on her hand.

She was drawing a heart on her hand.

I would like to weave, warm, woolly, words, into a blanket to protect and comfort you on a cold dismal day. To do more than please you, like the fleeting pleasure of youthful love. Like those wonderful shooting stars of pleasure that burnt out in our atmosphere.

They look stable and contented.

They look stable and contented.

Happiness is more stable than pleasure. Happiness is where the bubbling mountain streams combined their strengths, flowing together forming the source of a mighty river. Sharing and appreciating all that passes. Happiness is living with love.

Happy and couldn't care less what you think.

Happy and couldn’t care less what you think.

To know pleasures pass and although happiness can stay with us to the end, the end is inevitable.   This is not a morbid way to think, it is a fact and when realised, brings joy. Understanding our life is passing, we stop cling to the fleeting pleasures and share happiness and good fortune.

Sharing there joy with "Mustang Sally.

Sharing their joy with “Mustang Sally.

Loving and sharing is the key to the treasures of happiness and the joy locked in life’s treasure chest. Life’s treasures cannot be hoarded in a bank to appreciate. They must be shared to appreciate and be appreciated by everyone, to bring peace and contentment to the world.

I good way to spend the day and you don't need a lot of money.

I good way to spend the day and you don’t need a lot of money.

Wisdom¬†is¬†knowing as the poet said ‚ÄúPleasures are like snowflakes on the river one moment white then lost forever‚ÄĚ. Letting go and¬†sharing brings happiness.

The closest to snow in Queensland.

The closest to snow in Queensland.

Desiring more is disastrous; wanting is the problem child that is conceived of lust. The offspring of wisdom is contentment.

This is not the Suwannee River.

This is not the Swannee River.

Wanting for nothing, ironically, is to have all we need. The struggle for more never brings lasting happiness. Luxuries and status symbols are not necessary. Understanding this promotes love, happiness and contentment. Appreciating what you have, is to be wrapped in a blanket of contentment, protected from the cold, outside world, warm in your inner world with peace of mind. You cannot control the outer world; you can control peace in your own mind.

Keep it wall in balance.

Keep it all in balance.
