SONGS HAVE MEMORIES.

To Bondi 1of 2 471_4000x3000

As I remember we fitted together like a key in a lock. Until the way-would gypsy in me broke the lock that held us together. I was not ready to nest, I wanted to spread my wings and fly. Like the wild goose Frankie Lain sang about, in the 50s. But it was Judith Durham’s The Carnival is over that was haunting me in the 60s those harbour lights had mesmerised me.

We like to think we are wild geese.

We like to think we are wild geese.

Life is a puzzle, full of ironies, and words are an imperfect medium to explain it. To allowed the monkey in our mind to wilfully swing from thought to thought is not mindful.  When one consciously lets the mind recall the past, or purposely plan for the future, it is alright. It is when we let our mind run on auto pilot and allow our subconscious to take the wheel we are in danger of losing control.

Who wants a better stove?

Who wants a better stove?

Hurrying to the future is prevalent in the technological world of today. Oblivious of our tasty breakfast we gulp our food to rush to a mundane job. Toiling for more than we need, desiring status symbols or devices we are told will save us time. Time cannot be saved; it is a passing thing that cannot be clung to. Aware, but not consciously aware and mindful, mindful is to be consciously aware, not running on auto pilot.

Full of youthful bounce.

Full of youthful bounce.

Knowing I am dwelling in the past is not fretting or regretting, it is recalling those passionate hot to trot youthful days, when love was synonymous with romance, infatuation and conquest. It is good not to forget those days and criticise the youth of today. Our vocabulary has improved now we know the meaning of reciprocity. Aware that true love is giving more than taking. True love is one thing that the more you give the more you receive.

Will they fall.... in-love ?

Will they fall…. in-love ?

Ignorant of the wisdom of the sages passed down through the ages. Back in my youth I had two gypsies in me, called curiosity and adventure, goading me on. The warm bed the tender caresses forfeited for faraway fields. There is no remorse, only a bitter sweet feeling of what might have been. I am sure I did the right thing; I needed to grow in understanding.

You see a lot when you travel.

You see a lot when you travel.

Traveling alone in foreign lands is the best teacher one can ever have.

May be this is your Christmas wish.

May be this is your Christmas wish.

In my memory she will remain a golden haired girl full of life. In reality I can imagine a grey and wrinkled woman. Our memory can span the ocean of time but an ocean of water has flown under the bridge since the 60s. Perhaps after a long tiresome journey she has gone home to rest. To be a billion dust-mites floating on the morning breeze to sparkle in the morning sun as new life.

A lovely person from the 60s.

A lovely person from the 60s.

Who knows?

I will end my love story here I have revealed enough. I have given you more than you realise, if not what you expected. Sorry if the ending was not a wonderful exciting climax. But this is not a TV romance made to make millions. It is just a story similar to many stories that leave us wondering.

This is the fruity ending, not as you pictured.

This is the fruity ending, not as you pictured.

Fully Absorber in the Now.

Watching the action.

Watching the action.

“Jack!”

I put the finishing touches to the picture.

Fully focused on what I am doing and thinking of nothing else.

Now I think I’ll pencil it in the calligraphy, then I hear but am not listening.

“Jack!!”

‘Then see how it looks before using the ink.’

“Jack!!!”

I am aware of the irritable emotion but answer without thinking.

“What’s the problem?”

“You are the problem, I don’t know if you can hear me or are ignoring me.”

“I am absorbed, doing some art.”

“Can’t you just say YES so I know you have heard?”

Aware I am getting annoyed, I should have done my little, count to ten, few deep breaths, unmindful I just respond.

! YES! YES!” Then I realise I am losing my temper.

“Just go back to your art sorry I interrupted you!”

“No I want to know, should I ring the fire brigade or the police what is the emergency?” That was I realise nasty, sarcasm.

“It is not important, I just wanted to know where you hid the rake, it is not where it should be kept.”

“Sorry, last time I saw it was when we were mulching up the pruning.”

“Well it is not where it should be kept.”

I am trying to recall what happened.

“I was raking up the last of the leaves; yes, you called me to help put the tarp around the mulching machine. Have you looked in where the mulcher is?”

“No, did you leave it there?”

“May be I was raking up and you asked me to help you with the mulcher I probably just put it down without thinking, I remember putting my gloves back on the bench but can’t remember what I did with the rake.”

“You remember all that but can’t remember where you put the rake.”

“Well I was not thinking at the time I was running on auto pilot, unmindful just responding not fully aware.”

“What’s all this living in the now you have been reading about?”

Two minutes later “I found the rake, where you left it in by the mulcher.”

“That’s great, come and have a look at what I’ve done.”

“I like the surfer catching the wave, but what has that got to do with the writing,

“We only have one moment to live and that is NOW.”

“Well the wave is passing but the surfer has caught it, he is living right in the now.”

“And you left the rake in the past.”

“Let’s not live in the past”

“If you want to live in the now, be mindful of where you leave the rake in future.”

Some times we get dumped.

This is the drawing I was fully absorbed in.

Habitual walking.

Cool morning Yoga meditation on Bondi Beach.

Cool morning Yoga meditation on Bondi Beach.

Habitual walking is not as Thich Nhat Hanh, in his beautifully written book “Peace is Every Step.“ describes walking. What he describes is actually walking meditation. If you are an active person you may prefer this rather than sitting.

Some habits are not wise.

Some habits are not wise when you are not so sure-footed.

Mindful walking is a cognitive process you are conscious and aware. If we repeat anything often enough it becomes a habit. This is very useful it enables us to become skilled operators. As long as we do not get too inattentive and become prone to problems.

It could have been worse.

It could have been worse.

Habitual actions describe how we fly through life in a fog. We do not actually see where we are going we are traveling on auto pilot. Our thoughts are on some thing in the future or past, not focused on what we are doing.  Meditation teaches us how to stay focused. Those thoughtless actions are the cause of pain and suffering.

A stitch in me wastes time, but helps healing.

A stitch in me wastes time, but helps healing.

The Buddha Siddhartha Gautama said the first step on The Eight Fold Path is Understanding, next is right thinking the next that automatically follows is right actions. Then he discusses right occupation The Buddha is only interested in getting you into a good job. By good he means harmless and beneficial.

This is a good clean job, not paid for sitting down.

This is a good clean job, paid for sitting up.

You may be more interested in getting a well-paid occupation. I would also advise doing what you enjoy to earn an honest crust. Then making dough is a pleasure. People often say what line of work are you in. They used to say out on the construction site, “What’s your game, mate?” Back then, in the good old days, before tight safety regulations took the virtuosity out of it. I would say, “I am a rigger.” I loved my high position looking down on everyone. I was a young show off and got my thrills riding on the crane hook.

Climbing up steps to operate a tower crane, we used to use the hook and climb in the window.

Climbing up steps to operate a tower crane, we used to use the hook and climb in the window, in the good old days.

The young extroverts today (I dare not call then show-offs) have to hoon-around to get a buzz. Putting the public in danger and they do not get paid for it. Instead it costs them, for petrol their motorbike or car and on top of that they get fined.

The police love hoons, they are keeping them in a good exciting job.

The police love hoons, they are keeping them in a good exciting job.

Well I suppose they could say, “It is better than walking.”

I should have been walking.

I should have been walking.

The next steps to consider are right effort, right concentration and mindfulness, not to stepping off the path. It is human to be unmindful and inevitable to step off the path. When we take a wrong step it is no good placing blame or fretting. Just pick yourself up and try again. The same as you do in meditation when your mind wanders.  You can falter but never fail to try.

It is safe in a sheltered harbour but ships were not made for that.

You should always practice traveling light.

Unnecessary baggage is never right.

Why do we cling to possessions in life?

That’s the cause of our troubles and strife

Possessions weigh you down and slow your pace.

This is the greatest problem for the human race.

It is a one-way ticket don’t miss the bus,

Because of baggage and needless fuss.

Do not grasp and cling to life in this way

Experience life’s joy, make it a holiday.

A great way to great the day.

A great way to greet the day.

It does not matter if you walk or go by plane.

It’s the path you choose that makes it joy or pain.

Kindness, caring, hugs and maybe a kiss,

Is the way to fill your life with mostly bliss.

A golden flower like a golden....

A golden flower like a gold sun rise.

The destination is not the important thing.

It’s how much joy and happiness you bring.

When your travels are over, you may feel like a rest.

I don’t know but whatever happens it will be for the best.

Bondi Beach International Yoga Day.

Bondi Beach International Yoga Day.

Deep thought Meditation.

Of course Jack was there.

Of course Jack was there.

One  concentrates on a word or a phrase. Analysing it to find deeper understanding. I call this meditation deep thought meditation.

I missed out on the sunrise I went to see but got this surprise.

I missed out on the sunrise I went to see but got this surprise.

By the way I’m dictating this into my iPad and it doesn’t always understand exactly what I’m saying when I said “I called this meditation deep thought meditation” it wrote ‘I call this meditation stupid thoughts medication’. Proof reading is a must.

It was World Peace Day according to Sirs.

It was World Peace Day according to Siri.

Back to the focus of today, I was focusing on the word attachment. I understand the universal truth that all things are subject to change. I have given it the deep thought treatment. Looked at it from all angles, everything is in flux, all things are passing. Children grow up, cars dent, I cannot think of anything that in time does not change.

Some children grow up, others just grow.

Some children grow up, others just grow.

Understanding that change is the nature of all things we are less wanting and clinging. We realise becoming too attached to things is the course of much unhappiness. Wanting and clinging to impermanent things can never bring lasting happiness

Bondi Beach what a good place to meditate.

Bondi Beach what a good place to meditate.

To meditate on attachment by giving it the deep thought treatment. What do we mean by attachment? Adding a tail to the donkey or in the sense of affection or fondness? It is natural for a mother to have an affectionate attachment to her baby. An infant needs this close attachment of trust. The baby will interact with other people while mother or the person they have this attachment to is within sight. But if that person leaves the scene the baby will be stressed. So attachment is natural.

A baby Buddha in a florist shop.

A baby Buddha in a florist shop.

Things change the baby grows physically and its social circle expands. A child finds a circle of people to trust. As time passes, the baby becomes a child with an ever growing circle of friends and interests to explore. Change is the nature of all things the child becomes a young adult. Changing with the interaction of every person and thing encountered, every sensory encounter has an effect, building a unique character.

We are all unique.

We are all unique.

Meditating on attachment we realise all this change causes worry for the loving parents.

Same florist shop.

Same florist shop.

Love is not always a joy, love can hurt. This is an example of the unsatisfactory nature of things the Buddhists call dukkah, where love can causes pain. Love is very much subject to change when outside influences become involved.

An example of love love.

An example of puppy love.

You may agree with Siri (the iPad ) that this is stupid meditation. Then go no further than meditation on the breath it is very beneficial to your health. By calming the mind your stress level drops and stress affects every bodily function. Alfred E Newman was not Mad when he said “What me worry?”

Wild but not angry.

Back home grazing on the plains.

There once was a wild buffalo that roamed the muddy swamp lands of the young mind.

Things must change the swamp was drained the ox was tamed. It was a savage youthful game the picador, matador or bull, one must meet disaster. Death was flaunted in those adventurous, hectic years of joy and tears.

This is not a bullfight.

This is not a bullfight.

Let us not forget those naïve years and judge unfairly the youth of today. To tame the bull takes calm and patient contemplation. In time with practice a state of peace and contentment can be achieved. The ox is free from yoke and harness to roam the fertile grassland of the mind. It is now tamed and does not stray as in those stressful, boisterous party years.

An attractive flower.

Life is a challenging jungle to adventurer in, full of wonderful exotic things to tempt us from the virtuous safe path. To become the prey of some greedy hateful thing and be devoured by the beast of ignorance.

Lunch time on the Adelaide River.

Lunch time on the Adelaide River.

Carried away by the turbulent flow of life we desire the flowers blooming on the roadside. These flowers never last they wither fade and die. We crave for more and are led astray into the danger zone. We can be aware that we are straying from the path this is not enough we must be mindful of the danger in these misadventures and return to focus on the destination.

Showing respect to the Buddha.

There are always wondrous temptations to distract the unmindful from the path that leads to the fertile grassy plain where true understanding resides and peace and contentment reigns. This is where the calm serene ox grazes.

My grandson sings the sane type of songs.

My grandson sings the sane type of songs.

Overflowing, hopefully with love and compassion.

With love and beauty in abundance.

With love and beauty in abundance.

As a child I sang this song “My Cups Full and Running over, running over, running over, since the Lord saved me, I’m as happy as can be, my cups full and running over.” What run over, ran to waste. Science has created a mind boggling array of inventions that distract us from focusing on what we should be focused on. Why isn’t this affluence bringing us the happiness we had envisaged it would? We are flooded with distractions, mind boggled with our possessions and craving for more.

We are so fortunate having this.

We are so fortunate having this.

Jesus, known as the son of God did his best to teach us to love our neighbours.   Gautama taught anapanasati that is meditation on the breath that calms the turbulent mind.   He was a rich man’s son but like Mick Jagger could get no satisfaction, riches were not the way to peace and contentment. He tried denying himself, deprivation did not work. He made it his life’s ambition to find a way out of suffering. Through meditation he found Nirvana or enlightenment, a middle way that freed him from the three poisons of greed, hate and delusion.

Free as a bird.

Free as a bird.

Fundamental to all schools of Buddhism is his basic teaching of The Four Noble Truths and The Eightfold Path. I have covered this in previous posts refer here. or may be here. All the steps are important practices, I will stress this point of practice with the saying, “To know and not to do is still not to know.” We must practice to achieve any benefit. Understanding is an important step there is a lot to understand in the Four Noble Truths; all things are passing and impermanent is a crucial point in right understanding. Mindfulness is equally as important all steps are related and must be practiced to achieve enlightenment or the elusive state of Nirvana where one becomes a Buddha meaning an awakened one.

We can escape.

We can escape.

Mindfulness is to understand what is on our mind and be aware of our thoughts and emotion. Through meditation we can learn to understand how invasive thoughts distract us from what we should be focused on.  We become calm and focused, attentive to the now, with practice a few deep breaths is all that is needed to bring one back to the now. This has many benefits, modern clinical psychology and psychiatry is using it for cases of depression and has given it other clever names like Mindful based cognitive therapy (MBCT) or Mindful based stress reduction (MBSR)

See the in every branch.

See all the beauty..

Mindah- Lee Kuma (Enthusiastic Buddhist) suggested I write a post on mindfulness and then put in a link to her. I wanted to introduce her to you because I am impressed by the way she explains Buddhist practices. She has seriously practiced Buddhism and her videos on YouTube and her writing reflect this fact Click here. My posts are more of a fun exercise in a healthy joyful way of experiencing life. Hit the link to meet a charming young lady who explains many wise practices calmly and clearly.

be mindful of real beauty.

be mindful of real beauty.

I would like to conclude with a few tips that I have found helpful. Slow down, when you are weeding your garden be aware of the daises.  Be mindful that a weed is only a flower growing out of place. Look at what you are doing and take an interest in what you are doing. The difference between drudgery and a satisfying job is attitude. Be mindful of your thoughts and emotions, are you thinking I have to do this or are you thinking I want to do this. We miss the joy of now, thinking about what’s on TV, worrying about what we might be missing and missing the wondrous now. The most important person in the world is the one you are with now. The most important thing is what you are doing now. Take pride in what you are doing, do it with your full attention. That way you will have fewer accidents and save time. Do not multitask, when eating savour food mindful of the taste and texture, a meal can be an enjoyable form of meditation. Many things we judge as routine or mundane can be transformed with understanding and mindful concentration.

Do not miss the basic beauty.

Do not miss the basic beauty.

Quiet time.

Quiet time in our garden.

My Way of Coping.

Quiet time in garden above a busy city.

Quiet time in a garden above a busy city.

We would like a peaceful world no agitation no hatred. I found it was useless grumbling and complaining. I wrote letters to politicians and received printed sheets back with their party’s answers. The only hand written part was the signature. No more acknowledgement than a two-fingered salute. Complaining is useless even to those with some power to change things. Expecting others to fix things by stirring and organising people to protest only adds to the problem and makes you unhappy. Mass protests only aggravate the problem and it becomes a highly explosive situation.

I have come to the conclusion, mindfulness of others feelings, showing friendliness, being kind caring and sharing is the only way to reverse the downward spiral taking us into the wasteland, created by our greedy throwaway society.

A smile from Jade.

A smile from Jade.

My challenge is in the now, mindful of my thoughts, emotions and action. That is the first step mindful of my thoughts and emotions and understanding grasping and clinging is not the answer, caring and sharing is the only way to alleviate the problem. We must be aware all things are passing and subject to change and everything is interconnected; therefore I must change myself to become a better person. Changing my faults has an effect on all my surroundings. A good attitude and wholesome thoughts brings about a positive change in my immediate world. A smile is infectious and a person’s attitude is passed on.

Jasmine shows a sweet smile.

Practice starts at home with you and I, then will expand to the rest of the world. This is a slow process and we are living in a fast paced age.

Michael is bursting with smiles.

Michael is bursting with smiles.

If we plant and cultivate nourishing seeds of kindness and compassion we will harvest a storehouse of happiness. I am not religious but I am guided by the Buddhist Eightfold Path and helpful wisdom from all beliefs. We need an ethical set of precepts to follow. We do not need a bigoted hierarchy type religion. We need to think for our self and in our heart we know what kindness is. We only have to imagine how we would feel in another sentient beings circumstance.

Amie the newest member of a smiling family.

Amie the newest member of a smiling family.

A smile is a good start to promote friendship; a smile is the seed that love grows from. Be aware of your emotional state, it is difficult to smile if your attitude is negative. A gloomy or tense face can be mistaken for an unfriendly face. Start with a smile then a kind word or deed. Then the true practice starts where effort to be a better person is needed. To be trusted you must be honest and trustworthy.

My grand children follow Jesus I learn from all.

My grand children follow Jesus I learn from all.

So smile be happy stop grumbling, complaining and getting upset. All the worry only upsets you and disturbs your mind and the downward spiral starts. It is this disease that leads to anger, hate and bad actions.

Look above the muddy water to see beauty.

Look above the muddy water to see the beauty.

Change and love life do not destroy it. Meditate on peace, dispelling anger promoting all the virtues, to a point where you glimpse Nirvana. At times I feel everyone is my friend and I am in tune with all that surrounds me. I have reached a point of tranquillity where the outside hustle and bustle has little effect on my inside tranquillity.

Unaffected by the mud the lotus blooms.

Unaffected by the mud the lotus blooms.

The TV stirs the mud by bringing the problems of the world and tempting advertising into our homes. Inflaming desire and greedy wanting for unnecessary luxuries. When you feel the pressure of commerce and the worries of the world getting to you take a deep breath and if necessary keep quietly concentrating on your breath till you find your mind clear and settle. With regular meditation the turbulent muddy water settles and clear crystal understanding emerges.

Find peace beyond the city.

Find peace beyond the city.

You need to take a rest from the rat race at every opportunity, in nature’s garden. Cultivating and caring, appreciating the wondrous things created for all to enjoy. Be patient, it will take time, but will never happen till you take that first step on the path to paradise. It is a slow process reaching the stage where your part of the world is at peace. It will take much longer for your achievement to inspire others. At least you will have the joy surrounding you. It is up to you the ball is in your court as they  say.

A quiet place is never far away.

A quiet place is never far away.

The author is a beautiful lady from the Gold Coast, Queensland, which accounts for her love of surfing.  The sample below may prompt you to read to the book.

Breath, bend, blossom is my humble interpretation of what they have taught me over the years and how I have come to apply lessons of yoga in my life;

Everyone can enjoy.

Everyone can enjoy.

That it starts with the breath, the life-force, the union between our individual spirits and the divine universal energy.

That our body is the temple that houses the spirit, so we bend and stretch and twist and fold to keep that temple healthy and strong;

The watchful eye in the sky keeps everyone safe.

The watchful eye in the sky keeps everyone safe.

It is only when we have trained the body, mind and soul that we can truly blossom and use the lessons of yoga to make the world a more beautiful and peaceful place.

Living meditation is about being totally president in everything I do and making it a sacred experience. When eating a meal focus on smell, flavour, texture and savour every morsel. Imagine how your life would change, if you could just be aware and present in every moment. Breathe in the sweet fresh air. Smell the perfume of flowers. Hear the birds sing. Look up to the clouds. Let go of thoughts and just breathe.

Get On The Right Path.

Don't be tempted off it.

Don’t be tempted off it.

The irony of my cryptic writing is, if you understand it you have no need to read it. Many will not understand, they have lost the Way. They have lost the balance, they do not understand the true nature of things. They look for happiness in impermanent things. They have cleared the trees to see the light. Had the carpenter been a gardener things may have
been different. We now realise we are not the centre of the universe.

This Buddha and the amulets helped me write this post.

This Buddha and the amulets helped me write this post.

We still do not understand the Way, the Way is beyond our understanding. It is the force that keeps the whole cosmos in equilibrium. When the opposing forces are in balance we find a state of perfect bliss.

The tranquil unspoilt quiet.

The tranquil unspoilt quiet.

There is another way, it is the path called the middle way. The path of understanding, walking this path we find peace, contentment and true understanding. Peace can never be found with violence. Peace is understanding, it is the turbulence that creates the muddy undrinkable water.

There is salt in this water but the water is wonderful.

There is salt in this water but the water is wonderful.

Still  the mind to find the clear crystal water.  Thirst for nothing else, to want for nothing is to have it all.

The wild steeds, wild water.

The wild steeds, wild water.

Remain calm under pressure allow the angry mud to settle. Anger is mud polluting the pure water, rise above it as the  lotus flower opening to the sunshine.

Unblemished by the mud to the light.

Unblemished by the mud to the light.

To become unbalanced by the anger in another being is to blame the sufferer for the dis-ease they are suffering from. Do not become infected by the disease yourself and spread the pain and suffering. Do not mistake the pure water for the mud spoiling it. Do not blame the person for what ales them. There are no bad people only the unbalanced, the  ignorant and infected. The only cure to their problem is understanding what they are suffering from.

More reminders of balance in music and life.

More reminders of balance in music and life.

Suffering could be caused by dehydration, lack of water, a necessary need, or fear could be causing their foolish actions. The coward dies a 1000 deaths the hero dies but once. With help and compassion we can ease their pain and calm their fear. Those that suffer the pain of greed and aversion, chasing their desires and running from their dislikes, they are never at rest. We must try to understand their pain and treated them accordingly. The greedy are suffering a dis-ease that can never be killed by force. They will struggle in the dense jungle with the wild beasts of envy, hatred, ignorance and anger. Till they find their way back on a righteous path or suffer their obesity and choke on their greedy hoard.

No longer Jungle, it is rain forest.

No longer Jungle, it is rain forest.

We cannot help them by slashing our way into their violent jungle of venomous, vile, vengeful beasts. We must walk the path step-by-step, each step bringing us closer to perfection.
Walk in comfortable shoes with souls of love, kindness and compassion.
Understanding is a giant stride, with knowledge  skip  along the path. Ever mindful of hazards on our joyous Way. It is inevitable in our exuberance we will stumble off our righteous path. When this happens it is not a sin, it is a lesson we can learn from. It is like when distracted in meditation – calm down and return to your focus.

I know the path he is focused on.

I know the path he is focused on.

All is good on the right path, critics tell us our faults so we can correct them. Adversity and accidents are our teachers.
Even the bad times are good with the right attitude and understanding.

Be mindful of very step.

Be mindful of very step.

You can be given a map showing the path to perfection. But to know and not to do is still not to know. No one can carry you all the way, you have to make the effort.
