Twilight, between the night and sunrise.

Twilight, between the night and sunrise.

Ocean of Joy.

A sole surfes.

A sole surfer.

The earth orbits around the sun. The knight dresses in golden armor, refreshed after a vacation in the land of oblivion. Beta waves with amplitudes of varying frequency signal consciousness this is a better way to be, to feel, to think, and to act.

Oh what a beautiful morning.

Oh what a beautiful morning.

The big swell, light offshore wind, the surf is up. I am up and the conditions are ideal for being with nature. My bare feet touch the wet sand, I earth-out, bearing my board to face the challenging waves. The battle starts the turbulent white-water has to be overcome, to reach the trysting place, where the engagement takes place. This is the challenging moment where man and nature connect, to go with the flow,in the now. Wu wei, this is the breaking, or the making moment of ecstasy, living in the now, with the force of nature.

Early birds of a feather.

Early birds of a feather.

People fight life wanting, grasping, and hording not understanding all material things are impermanent and everything transient. Like the passing wave, we can only go, with the flow of nature. The time is now, the wave will not wait, life is now do not waste it. The most important thing is what you are doing now; the most important person is the one that is with you now. Travel light laiden down with pockets full of coins the surfer would drown. Some possessions we use, the ones we do not use are a burden needing protection and maintenance. To the needy and the greedy flaunting wealth causes envy, jealousy, and hate. Enjoying nature’s free gifts, sharing our gifts is in tune with nature way.

Just another day in Paradise.

Just another day in Paradise.

Beginning your day in the twilight you will catch the sun’s brilliant display. This is the photographers ‘Golden Hour’ at sunrise and the brief time of long shadows and warm glowing colour or sometimes misty affects, a challenge to capture and keep to share with others. Any activity that inspires you to rise early full of enthusiasm will enhance your life. I have always been an up with the birds sort of person. I enjoyed my work, there was no drudgery in doing what I liked, building dams, power stations, bridges, pipelines and roads. An occupation should be chosen that does service, rather than harm. That was my pleasure in getting my nourishment working not purely for money.

Self sculpture, Jack and hot little board.

Self sculpture, Jack and hot little board.

As a youth I got an adrenalin buzz riding the crane hook or feeding my ego up in the purlins. Today safety regulations have taken the excitement and the expertise out of rigging and construction work. A young man has to get his excitement from less practical activities. Does the way you ‘earn a crust’ bring you joy and satisfaction? Do you work for ‘big bickies’ to buy status symbols and luxuries beyond what you need? I am not averse to earning large sums of money as long as it is earned in an ethical way and spent on unselfish things.

A boy at heart.

A boy at heart.

At the end of the day what have we achieved, can we sleep with an untroubled mind? A joyous day full of good activity aids a restful night. Enjoy today in a pleasant way for it will pass. Leave no more than foot prints in your travels and take only pictures. Have respect for age, Mother Earth is extremely old. Some say about 5 billion years others only 6,ooo years, let us not get diverted, extremely old we can all agree on. We must be mindful of the beta wave frequency and amplitude.

Natures sacredcathedral.

Natures cathedral.

Take a walk in natures garden hear her music the rustle of the leaves caressed by the gentle breeze aware of her breath of life. Breath in the life-giving air, exhale the negative waste. You can focus on your breath; you can count on this to calm an agitated mind. Your emotions becoming tranquil, you can now see the beauty everywhere. Conversely an angry person cannot taste the food in his mouth. This is meditation on the breath, concentrate on the breath of life and you will appreciate what a wondrous world we live in. this is to love life and all creation.

A leaf out of natures good-book.

A leaf out of natures good-book.

Not wasting time on fighting over who has found the truth. The truth is elusive and is also subject to change. The irony is the only thing that does not alter is the fact that ‘everything is subject to change.’ I will be generous and say to the waiter accept the change.

The words of Uncle sham.

What is for dinner?

What is for dinner?

Uncle Sam never lies; instead he invented a fertilizer and spread it all over the world garden and production flourished. USA, Us of A, us of Australia, have changed the English language, calling this type of fertilizer advertising. As in the conversation Humpty Dumpty had with Alice in. “Through the Looking Glass” by Lewis Carrolls. “When I say a word,” Humpty said in a rather scornful tone, “It means just what I choose it to mean – neither more nor less.” “The question is“said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many things.”

Pauline questions Humpty Dumpty.

Pauline questions Humpty Dumpty.

The slaughter–house was demolished and in its place the abattoir was established. The meat industry still was not happy with sales. Meat processing plant was the phrase adopted, cut short, with a sharp knife, to processing plant. Flesh covered in hair has no resemblance to meat wrapped in plastic. The rainforests in Brazil are becoming grass lands for vast cattle-stations. Livestock use up more than a quarter of the earth’s surface and contribute to polluting precious water systems.

What is for lunch.

What is for lunch.

Ronald McDonald decided to dress up as a clown and put play grounds in his fast food outlets. If we can get the kids in mum and dad will follow. Advertising invades almost every area of our garden. Our only escape is a date with Mother Nature, to meditate and gain control of our thoughts. How much fertilizer can be put on the garden before it destroys our source of nourishment, killing our garden paradise, banishing us once more from Eden? Too much of a good thing is growth without attention to sustainability. There is a difference between useful necessities and luxuries or useless trinkets. We horde and want too much and share too little.

How about that?

How about that?

TV is a habit, especially if you have been on the tread mill all day trying to keep up with the Joneses. Leaving no time to quietly meditate or think is this really a good way to live? The Joneses are not content with all their toys advertising keeps showing them a new and better version they must have. This is dynamic lifter (The trade name for chicken manure) and is being tipped in our lounge rooms via the TV. TV is the secret weapon for the effluent that is spread to the affluent. Politicians keep you in a job so you will keep them in a job. The buy-buy materialistic economy is unsustainable.

I don't want to be The Red Rooster.

I don’t want to be The Red Rooster.

Too exhausted to cook a wholesome meal, take the family to Ronald’s or to Colonel Saunders if you prefer eating dead chicken. There is no cleanup after, just dump all the superfluous packaging in the rubbish bin, if you can muster up the energy. Then home to sit back and watch TV commercials, interrupted by a frivolous show that some viewers value more than the ads. No need to think, the canned-laughter and applause from the studio audience will let you know how to react; they are shown sign boards so they know when to laugh. This is an example of the vicious tread mill where the rodents train for the rat race.

Scrap metal collector.

Scrap metal collector.

The endless growth of materialistic economics combined with the imbalanced distribution to regions where life’s needs are lacking, has caused the increase of global temperatures and hostility between people. Freedom-fighters, guerrilla armies or are they terrorists it depends on whose side you are on. Today let us not call a spade a spade that would be ruled out-of-order. Social justice must prevail. Spade and Sambo are derogatory terms for Afro-American.

Can Barak Obama clean up the mess or is he going to be blamed for the chaos left in the wake of the Bush administration.  Someone is always the fall guy. I would like to see Uncle Sambo out-wit the tiger as in the cartoon link. Those old cartoons full of racial slurs were considered harmless fun by white people. As a child I could not see how harmful and hurtful they were.

All car parts of a days work.

All car parts of a days work.

It is a war of words it takes our mind off the real issues. Words have become weapons of mass deception. Uncle Sam needs you to fight for truth and justice and the American way. Play it again Sam, you cannot have it both ways, it is either truth and justice or the American way. Ironically many Americans would agree, they have lost faith in their political system. Intent on promoting the American way in the world and neglecting the flood banks in New Orleans. Where mother Nature put on a little demonstration of her power.

Just a wave from Nature.

Just a wave from Nature.

Australia is indebted to America, in that it saved us from the Japanese invasion. Supplying us with armaments at a reasonable cost, then when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor they actually entered the war to save Australia. The war took a decided turn when Uncle Sam arrived with the cavalry. In typical Hollywood fashion they were heroes to the rescue, no vengeful motives. Japan was on her last legs when America dropped atomic bombs on two cities that ended the war days, perhaps weeks, quicker than it would have. I am not going to say it was wrong to drop those bombs or the methane bombs on Vietnam or any of the other conflicts Sam has entered into in the name of truth and justice. I do know the armaments industry is big business also the construction industry. Well-off nations are always ready to help rebuild demolished cities and they are conversely expert in demolishing them.

Think food for thought, food for all.

Think food for thought, food for all.

We are all involved in the biggest battle in history. Can America help in the fight Mother Nature has declared on the human race? I do not think we will win without the super powers contributing. The best thing we can do is surrender our materialistic way of life. Giving what is surplus to our needs to those who are ravenous for life’s necessities. Saying the words clean air, food and shelter, will not help one deprived of these necessities. You may give to charities but how much cream is skimmed off your milk of kindness.

All he needs to be happy.

All he needs to be happy.

A cliché is an overused phrase, but often true. Charity begins at home, another is if you want to change the world start with yourself. Try to live an exemplary life, I say try, as I try to follow the Buddha’s wise philosophy and I find it is very easy to step off the path he taught. With all my harsh criticism of Uncle Sam I am no doubt straying, hurting some people’s feelings. But it is the intention more than the action that governs the merit of an action. My intention is not to be hurtful they are ideas to assist people with good intentions, stop and think how can I best help the suffering in the world today. Without violently protesting or getting distressed. It is impossible to win a fight with Mother Nature, we must cooperate. Some of my ideas I hope may be a step on the path to understanding.

No worries so simple.

Glass House Mountains.

Glass House Mountains.

We grow attached to things that are close to us. Not close like a pair of undies, not that kind of snuggly close. More the being together of a warm wooly jumper on a bleak winter day, the something or someone who shared the wins and the losses and kept you smiling when it was all up hill. Through the sun shine and storms, time takes its toll, the shine and sparkle diminishes but the fondness grows for the tried and true the familiar and reliable.

Softened by Nature.

Softened by Nature.

I am pleased with the fad that made faded, frayed and tattered jeans and other garments fashionable. Stressed furniture with artificial crackling and peeling paint showing the under layers became the in-thing. Now I can take pride in my old weathered and worn comfortable things that I find appealing, without feeling inferior to the upwardly mobile fashion conscious crowd. Not that it worries me what people think now that I have my ego subdued and under control.

Nature's art.

Nature’s art.

At twenty I worried about these things, at forty I lost interest in what they thought, at sixty I realized no one was even noticing me, at eighty I am pleased if people smile at the way I dress so I wear what is functional and comfortable.

Nature are is every where.

Nature’s art is everywhere.

Our friends will excuse our idiosyncrasies and we should not grieve over unjust criticism. Most of the things I worried about never happened. So is worrying a way to prevent misfortune happening?  I stopped worrying a long time ago and the answer is worrying does not help in any way.

Their passing is beautiful.

Their passing is beautiful.

I genuinely like things that Mother Nature has aged, mellowed and softened. Perhaps it is because it reminds us that all things are impermanent and wanting this to be otherwise can only bring sorrow.

Castles are gone the old dog remains.

Castles are gone the old dog remains.

The child builds castles of sand the tide comes in, the child cries, that is one of the first lessons nothing lasts. Childhood passes also, have we learned we cannot cling to impermanent things. The flower blooms, fades and dies, the brilliant sunset fades into the dark night.

Past Reflections.

Past Reflections.

Nature’s lessons teach us not to cling and hoard but to freely share. The truth may well be, though I am well past my use by date, I still feel useful and am pleased I have not been discarded as worthless. I live in the now, sharing the good before it passes into infinity.

A beautiful fraim of a picture.

A beautiful frame for a picture.

There needs to be balance as one can get too fond of old things. I worked with a bloke; he was built like a brick chicken coop, but gentle as washing up liquid. One day to attract his attention I pulled on his shirt and a button popped off under the strain. The passive, massive man turned on me like a wounded buffalo, eyes flashing like hazard lights on a road train. He took off his shirt and tossed it on the floor shouting “You have wrecked my shirt!” “Sorry mate, I did not mean to, it’s an old shirt.” I should not have said it was old. “I’ve had that shirt since I was an apprentice, I only wear it on special occasions now.” He raved on about the places he wore that shirt, wakes and weddings, sporting events and music festivals. It took a lot of diplomatic bull dung to calm him down. Actually I did not say a word. I let him call me names that indicated I was far from dexterous and my mother let her heart rule her head. I used this opportunity to practice my exercise on staying calm under pressure. The fire burned down the pot went off the boil, he turned and left.

Dramatic departure.

Dramatic departure.

Next day I saw him and gave him back his shirt washed, ironed and with a new golden button in place of the lost one. I explained how sorry I was and returned his repaired shirt. He smiled and said he regretted losing his temper over an old shirt. “No worries the new button can remind you nothing lasts forever.” I said. He put out his hand in a gesture of friendship. I shook his hand and the rest of me stopped shaking. I felt so relieved and happy, over the moon as they say. I felt like laughing, so jokingly said “You were lucky I did not lose my temper too or you would have been in trouble.”  “Yes, I would have been up on a man slaughter charge.” He replied. We both cracked up laughing. It is so simple just do the right thing and you have no worries.

Something good.

Grand

Grand

He’s got the whole world I his hands, Come on let us sing. You know who we are singing about. That’s right god, your God. The God you have in your heart. Without that goodness there is no meaning to life. The whole cosmos is kept in equilibrium by the one and only, the inexplicable one, of many, God, Allah, Jesus, Brahman, The Tao, and The Force spoken of in Star Wars. Words, nouns and adjectives cannot define this all encompassing something.

Is anybody home.

Is anybody home.

When this something good that exists in you and me brothers and sisters and the whole world. When we recognize, acknowledge and appreciate this, we have a goal to aim for, a standard to meet, a blue print to build on, a rudder to steer us, a map to guide us and a star to aim for. We then know to go with the flow of this superior force and aim at excellence.  When the force is with you and you are working with this force for the wellbeing of all creation, you feel like singing Joy to the world and you feel good and the world is wonderful.

Joyful music.

Joyful music.

The ego is subdued by the force of right, no longer is I am so important it is you and others, we are one but we are many. No longer looking for points of disagreement we look for and see the many things we agree on. All the important things in life we agree on and we can respect other people’s ideas on what we find difficult to understand. My ego tells me I am right and I should not stand by calmly and let others make ridiculous statements. But my understanding tells me that I am not infallible. So long as others believe in promoting peace and harmony why make a big issue of technicalities.

Beauty is every where.

Beauty is every where.

It is essential to contribute to the welfare of everything that exists in our world, every person, every creature and our whole environment. As we are all interdependent nothing exists unaided without a chain of events; to damage one link weakens the whole chain. He has the whole world in his hands but some of us are singing out of tune. Come on listen to life’s melody get in tune and sing along. Be in the flow, share in the beauty, sing with all your heart.

The old violin.

The old violin.

This is a request from all the needy, altogether in tune, one two three, give it all you’ve got. Joy to the world, what a wonderful world and all my loving I will give to you. All the discord is blown in the wind. We have to believe we are magic nothing can stand in our way. Everybody loves somebody, somebody to love. Like the Blues Brothers, we are on a mission from God. You have to do the right thing or the almighty all powerful force will retaliate. It is up to you, to get in tune and sing along to find happiness, joy and contentment.

Gay or Sad.

Flowers are gay without being controversial.

Flowers are gay without being controversial.

There is nothing wrong with being gay. I used to be gay but now I am sad I cannot be gay any more. To day to be gay you emerge from a cupboard and declare I am homosexual this then makes you gay or happy to be out of the confined space of the metaphorical cupboard. Your unique balance of Yin and Yang, to some people would make you appear as queer as a square egg.  Yin and Yang in Chinese Taoism is the balance of opposites Yin representing feminine things in nature, cool, soft, the moon, Yang the masculine, hot, hard and the sun are examples. Yin and Yang are not actually opposites, one would not exist without the other and each contains some of the other. It is the balance of Yin and Yang that gives all things their unique nature. When you have the Yin and Yang in perfect balance you are fortunate you are in tune with nature.

More variety.

More variety.

I knew a girl named Gay she decided to go into the cupboard to change her name to Sue. Johnny Cash then pulled out of the cupboard a song “A Boy Named Sue.” Another trip to the cupboard for Sue, you could have knocked me down with half a house brick, out she came as Bob. Now she has a job driving a big Kenworth truck, yes girls can do anything. It was not always that way but John Wayne is dead, ‘the little woman’ can do what she likes, we now have power steering and automatic transmission. Men can also do anything now that we have, plastic baby diapers, TV dinners and dish washers. All the labor-saving devices that make house work child’s play. That leaves the children free to play computer games.

Australian variety of Grevilleas.

Australian variety of Grevillia.

We have happy marriages, why shouldn’t we have gay divorces. Why is something as popular as divorce sad? One does not have to give back the wedding presents or reimburse the parents for the cost of the reception or even pick up the confetti. What about the kids? Hopefully the kids now have two homes to choose from and lots more options in playing one parent off against the other. The children also have the legal system to look after their rights. Children are well-informed of their rights; no adult dare lay a hand on them. Even a friendly helping hand can be misunderstood. It is unfortunate children are taught to fear, God and man, when most men want to help and protect children. Lacking the time to take care and teach your children. You think it necessary to teach them fear? I am surprised at how many children grow into kind caring adults, when I consider their role models.

This is a close up of the Crown of Thorns.

This is a close up of the Crown of Thorns.

I am confused, I don’t know if I am Arthur or Martha, figuratively speaking. Actually I am fully aware of my gender. It is whether I agree with the values our society places on possessions and status that puzzles me. I do not want to be taken up the wrong way and it is not my intention to offend those people who are personally affected by an imbalance of Yin and Yang so to speak. There have been, and still are, a lot of talented people. Freddie Mercury, Queen’s vocalist. Remember their hit “Another One Bites The Dust.”? I still love that hit. Freddie made no secret about his bisexuality he actually capitalized on it. As a unique playwright wrote “There is only one thing worse than being talked about that is not being talked about.” That is attributed to Oscar Wild, so is “They are terrible temptations that it takes courage to yield to.” One of his young acquaintances may have said these lines and Oscar took the credit?

It is variety that makes a garden interesting.

It is variety that makes a garden interesting.

We should not judge people harshly just because they are different to us. Nothing in life is simple there are many variables. I hope this post triggers food for thought that prompts tolerance. The modern world is full of diversity and we need to look at everything with an open mind. If a woman drives a truck or a man is a house husband and women set up house together or men kiss on the football field. This is irrelevant it is whether they are helpful, kind and considerate to others that matters. We can have our preferences without condemning others for theirs and this tolerance should be reciprocal.

Contentment.

All you need is love.

All you need is love.

Contentment is to have what you need and want no more. To want more than you need is greedy. A greedy person is never satisfied desiring. If that desire is satisfied the pleasure is fleeting, the happiness passes the wanting continues. A new desire becomes the goal thinking it will lead to happiness. A mirage like the end of the rainbow can never be reached.

Rainbows end.

Rainbows end.

Contentment is a balance like when Yin and Yang are in perfect balance, neither too much or too little. In time all things pass it is a fact of life all is impermanent. Understanding this reality brings equanimity. Wanting is no longer a driving force sharing becomes the priority. Sharing is the antidote to greed. Sharing creates friends and friends in turn share their surplus. So sharing ensures you against hunger, needing and wanting.

Picture of contentment, when the bull is themed.

Picture of contentment, when the bull is themed.

Contentment is the balance between deprivation and excess. Without life-sustaining necessities all living things wither and die. The world is a garden of life caring for this world garden is our reason for existence. Not to appreciate and care for our garden we could starve ourselves out of existence. There is life-sustaining necessities we should be contented with. Greedily wanting taking more than we require will only bring sorrow. A fruitful way of life entails effort, an idle life focused on self brings discontentment.

This is the idea of contentment.

This is the idea of contentment

want for nothing is to be satisfied with enough. To know when you have enough is wisdom. Ignorance, always wanting, is the stupidity of the unenlightened. There is a way to find enlightenment a path to follow that leads to contentment and wisdom. It can be followed in conjunction with other ethical beliefs without any difficulty. These steps are a self-imposed set of rules that guide one to self-improvement. No one can walk this path for you. Others may point the way but self effort must be practiced in everyday living to bring peace and contentment.

Jogyesa Temole Seoul.

Jogyesa Temple Seoul.

There are eight basic rules to follow on this path to ethical self-improvement and it is a lifelong journey. One must always be aware of the many pitfalls and diversions along the path. False trails are a part of life’s path. It is human to lose our way. No need to fret over misguided steps. Return to the true path that leads in the direction of peace and contentment. Contentment is the closest man can come to lasting happiness. Pleasures are fleeting; happiness is like snowflakes on the river, to quote Robbie Burns, Or like bubbles on the river, as in  Worlds on worlds are rolling ever.Shelly’s poem, contentment lives within you.

One needs to be aware of their thoughts, speech and actions, concentrating, mindful at all times, of their state of mind and attitude. This is not an easy formula to follow but the amount of effort will directly govern the benefits received. You may have a method you prefer to this. Though I have studied many other philosophies, beliefs and paths and found helpful ideas. I have found this a clear blueprint outlining the steps to follow that, has enhanced the quality of my life, with peace, satisfaction and contentment.

Somewhere over the rainbow.

Somewhere over the rainbow.

Flowers bring colure to our life birds bring a song. By sharing our gifts we cannot go wrong.

I would like to share this philosophy. Caring and sharing is philanthropy.

Giving brings joy it is a win-win situation. Sharing good fortune is a pleasant sensation.

Wanting, cling and hoarding too is not the decent thing to do.

Be contented with enough, give to those doing it tough.

Bring contentment free from strife. With loving thoughts fill your life.

The birds defy gravity singing for you and me.

Give your gifts as freely as a birds and you will fly these are my words.

Jam-Packed With Goodies.

It pays to advertise.

It pays to advertise.

This jotting is jam-packed with goodies like a Christmas pudding, to be shared with all. Jesus may have soul rites but has not got sole patent rights out on peace and goodwill it should be practiced on everyone’s birthday. Now is a present we need to share in the now. Not last Christmas, or next, the past is history the future is a mystery. The most important thing you are doing is, now, the most important person is the person you are with, now. Be attentive and mindful of the present, impatiently hurrying to some future event, that may not be as anticipated, or fretting about the past, is to waste precious time. Time is irreplaceable more important than possessions.

Good Advertising.

Good Advertising.

Those that know they have enough are satisfied. Not to want is to be rich. When the glass is full stop pouring, greed is wasteful, so fill another’s glass and share the joy. Sharing is the way to peace. Selfishly, wanting and hording impermanent things, and all things are impermanent, is not the way to lasting happiness. Do not let the gold in your pockets weigh you down; traveling light is the way to enjoy your journey. Possessions come with responsibilities they need maintenance and protecting. Flaunting your affluence creates envy and promotes wrong doing. Sharing brings happiness to all. To know and not to do is still not to know.

Accept constructive criticism or you will never learn your failings. You do not need to accept unhelpful or spiteful criticism. Treat it as you would an unwanted gift and let it remain with the giver. Some comments and criticism are designed to cause trouble. A wise person does not get emotional when criticized. They do not retaliate with anger they remain calm. Anger is a fire that burns without regard to who struck the match. Angry people cannot taste the food they are eating or feel the poison in their system nor see reason. To an  angry person everything is tasteless.

Give what you can.

Give what you can.

Do not praise me for these words they are second-hand. I stand on the shoulders of giants for a better view of our world. Though, I would appreciate your comments to let me know if passing on these words has contributed to promoting some good in our world. They may be rephrased second-hand clichés; I have read so much, it is difficult for me to know. In my blog I try to condense what I have found useful. Then recycle it like pre-loved garments in a charity opportunity-shop. All things of value should be passed on; they may be of use to some needy person. I am not too concerned who donated the gift; only that it is made available for someone to benefit. Take a look, there may be some item you can use. A need is essential, a wanting is a luxury.

Buying second-hand may trouble a big ego. If you buy a new item with printed advertising promoting a company on it, you are being cheated. A person of note would be paid to be a company’s bill board. Especially if they are like most big named brands getting their product made in a sweatshop overseas. This uses precious resources on transport and causes local unemployment. Think where you’re spending your money and how many hours of your irreplaceable time you are trading. Ask yourself is it necessary and is it worth it?  The ego is vanity it can never be satisfied it must be controlled. The wise understand the ego and check in second-hand and opportunity shops when they need to buy.

Some times there are new cloths in opp.-shops.

Some times there are new cloths in opp.-shops.

Second hand shops are jam-packed with goodies. There are charity shops, they can help the buyer as well as help a good cause and the environment. There are second-hand shops run as a business, sometimes specializing, in furniture, electrical appliances, and other things. They fill a real need sometimes having things found no were else and at bargain prices. There are also curio shops and antique shops, they may be less practical but are like museums, packed with interesting things. I enjoy these shops it is surprising the wondrous things you see. There is no need to buy, just take pleasure in looking, it is not necessary to own something to enjoy its beauty.

Wheels of Progress.

This is the way, bikes for hire.

The invention of the wheel took a load off mans shoulders. It has many commercial uses one of its first uses was the wheelbarrow, carts and chariots. Today we have a vast array of uses for the wheel it is seen everywhere from the push-bike to the locomotive, the family car to the huge road-trains, big trucks pulling a string of trailers all with many pneumatic duel wheels.  On the water the wheel has mostly replaced the tiller.

In the late sixth century BC, before Christ, a man called Siddhartha Gautama lived, commonly known as the Buddha. Buddha found and taught others how to free themselves from life’s suffering. His teaching is called the Dharma by his followers. The basic teachings, fundamental to all schools of Buddhism, are known as The Four Noble truths and The Eight Fold Path. They are simple to understand but not so easy to put into practice as it takes mindfulness and self-discipline, without any supernatural assistance.

The wheel symbol on Thai Watt.

The wheel is symbol on a Thai Watt. (Thailand temple)

The symbol adopted to represent the eight ethical steps of the eightfold path is an eight spoke wheel. Each spoke represents a teaching to master. The first step is ‘right understanding, as outlined in The Four Noble truths, understanding that all things are passing. With right understanding the passing of people and material things no longer brings anguish and suffering. Through meditation on the impermanence of all things one learns equanimity. Also the futility of greed and clinging are realized. This is as big a step as the invention of the wheel but not in a commercial sense.

If you are ignorant of right understanding, the first step on the path, the other seven steps will be harder to keep to. The steps are not necessarily in any order each one must be practiced when the occasion arises. To be aware and mindful therefore is an important step on the moral path to contentment. Every step is important the second step right thoughts are just as important as, right speech, right actions, right effort and right occupation, earning our living in a way that does not adversely affect other beings. The sixth step is equally important the right effort to practice this honourable path to peace of mind is critical. All the steps combined are vital. Our right thoughts lead to right action. Just as all things are interconnected and essential in the balance of nature, so all steps on this intelligent path need following and practicing equally.

The wheel spokes remind us to be cantered.

The wheel spokes remind us to be centered.

Evert time I see a wheel it reminds me of those eight steps, that when practiced take me closer to perfection. This is the under laying goal in my life. Often I find myself straying from the right path unmindful, distracted and heading to an unsavoury destination, not a burning hell nothing as drastic as that. It is a worldly mercenary hell of greed and aversion, a world that is lacking in consideration, compassion, reciprocity and respect. I have trained my mind to respond to other symbols as a reminder of the path I am following.

Road-train overtaking, all things are passing.

Road-train overtaking, all things are passing.

I am reminded of the fleeting nature of all things when I see a flower, a sunset or the face of a clock. This natural law that we are all subject to is not a case of being singled out and persecuted, victimized or picked on. Things are just as they are. Realizing all things are subject to change we become less grasping and clinging more caring and sharing  and appreciate the simple pleasures in our life. Happy to be well and when plagued by misfortune knowing it will also pass. All things can be used to keep one focused, following the spiritual. I have no organized religion dictating to me but everyone needs a guiding ethical path. Man has created many Gods there is, I believe, only one with many names

Inventions are often misused.

Inventions are often misused.

The wheel can be used for commercial purposes or ethical. How we use the wheel and other inventions is the critical point. The wheels on a car must be kept in balance for safe and comfortable travel. Our symbolic spiritual wheel also needs attention to keep it in good running order. When you see a wheel you may recall the Eight Fold Path as I do and try to practice the eight steps. They will not clash with or change any of your existing beliefs. But may change your life by providing direction and meaning. To conclude I wish you a wheel good life.

Please look at the link, I have highlighted, it is well worth the effort. Another tip on effort the push has been taken out of the push-bike  with the invention of the powered bicycles. You will conserve more energy if you purchase one. Remember only if you need and do not just want to hang it on the garage wall. Like the Eight Fold Path it must be used to do any good.

Take care and stay on the on the right path.

Fear Courage Balance.

Fear is a necessary emotion to protect us from danger. Courage allows us to overcome fear. Balance is the skill needed to act sensibly neither cowardly nor reckless. Balance is needed in every aspect of life. When things are in balance they are in perfect harmony. Nature keeps the whole universe in equilibrium. I respect nature as some people respect their god. Nature will restore the unbalance man has created in the world. Some men fear God and have no respect for nature this is reckless ignorance not courage.

The good life.

The good life.

Abrahamic religions use the fear of God to enforce laws. Fear is often used by politicians to sway public opinion. Advertising uses many methods to sell products fear is one of their tactics. Is your house so dirty it is threatening to ruin your health? Insects must be killed and the ads show how to do it. Fear needs to be balanced with caution and common-sense. What kills insects surely is not good for our health. As for germs a healthy person’s immune system can cope with most germs. Bacteria is like cholesterol there are two kinds one kind is good for you the other blocks up your circulatory system. Less than one percent of bacteria are harmful some that live in your body are essential for your health. Cleanliness is very important but advertising has some people frightened of a bit mother earth.

I grew up with nothing more than water from a well to drink and a bar of plain soap was used to wash with. There were only basic natural things to remedy coughs, cuts and all the usual ailments.  No flush toilets when I was a boy only what we called a dunny. We did not use chemicals unless there was a real problem. We had no air-conditioning we opened a window and had fresh air; it killed germs and toughened me up. I have survived eighty-one years and never been unduly afraid of a bit of dirt. I do not expect doctors to look after my health, it is my responsibility. I try to live a clean and balanced life without all the pills and disinfectants I do not need chemical germ and insect killers to protect me.

All we needed.

All we needed.

We tend to leave it up to bureaucrats to protect us, consequently there are too many laws supposedly to protect the public. Health regulations have gone to extremes. I have eaten food prepared and cooked at food stalls in the streets of other countries and have suffered no ill effects. Seeing the fresh food cooked one can decide if it is fit to eat. In a restaurant, even though health department requirements have been met, one still has to trust the management. These laws cut down competition from the small man and favour the big food chain operators. We have lost control over our own welfare because of imaginary fears.

Safety regulations have a place but they have now taken a lot of the skill, challenge and team effort out of construction work. In general work today is looked upon as making money to buy luxuries. People used to ask “What is your game?” when they wanted to know how you made a living, now it is “What is your job?” Sport has become a job. TV time and sponsoring by big business has taken the fun out of the game. We need some courage to take control and get balance back in our life.

I do not fear the Muslims, the Christians or the Hindus. The Islamic Jihad does not scare me as I am no threat to their religion. There may be one religious fanatic in thousands. Should we fear all the others? You have more chance of being killed by a car. Do you hate cars because of this? I do not agree with many religions or their ideas but I find wisdom in some and I do respect the ethics of the sincere followers. I try to live by the five precepts that all major religions incorporate.  There are good people everywhere there are no evil people only the ignorant or sick. We should try to teach the ignorant and show compassion and care for the sick. The incurable cases need special care.  Courage balanced with understanding instead fear is needed.

Picnic lunch with friends.

We should be weighing up and concentrating on real dangers. Nature is trying to balance everything and man is only trying to balance the budget. Do not trust your health and welfare to doctors, chemists, bureaucrats or big business. Do not believe all the advertising, think for yourself and take responsibility for your own welfare. Do not let fear, greed or ignorance control you. According to Shakespeare, “Cowards die many times before their deaths, the valiant die but once”. Often rephrased as, a coward dies a thousand deaths a hero dies but once. Cowards or heroes death is inevitable so cherish all life and leave something for the next generation. All Mother Nature’s gifts are free and mans incestuous desires are unforgivable. Man’s greed is   reckless unbalancing the ecology there is nothing brave or courageous in raping mother earth.

Drawing on time.

Roosting rooster.

Roosting rooster.

Why is a picture worth a thousand words? The first cave drawings were done by the indigenous people of Australia. The importance of man discovering drawing allowed ideas to be passed on to future generations. The Egyptians then discovered hieroglyphics, picture writing and the Chinese developed abstract picture characters. This allowed information to span across the obstacle of time. A giant step was made in human knowledge allowing vast stores of information to accumulate unobstructed by the barrier of time.

Taking it easy.

Taking it easy.

This has made possible the technology we have today. From cave drawing to letters, the pin hole camera to moving pictures. Need I go on; you only have to look at your P.C. as an example. Although it is not obvious, those primitive drawings were responsible for the visual wonders we have today.

We are safe the cats are contained.

We are safe the cats are contained.

The written word in book form is being overtaken by the technology of today. We are becoming more reliant on pictures for our information. There is a danger in the ease of this visual excitement, we can become lazy.  Sitting back and becoming what is termed a couch potato, vegetables planted in the T.V. garden, vegetating. Letting multinational corporations brain-wash and lead us to believe whatever is in their vested interests. It could be to coercing us to buy something we do not need and possibly cannot afford, or frighten us into increasing our armaments.

Play time.

Play time.

Be aware a picture may be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to the mercenary few who control our media. To those few mercenary people I would like to say contentment cannot be found in material things. It is a poor man who needs position or possessions to be happy. Pleasures are fleeting and like a mirage can never satisfy our thirst.

Today we have too many wondrous distractions to divert us from our arts, crafts and the enjoyment and pleasure in living closer to nature. We are misled into thinking we need many things to be accepted into society. Most of these things are unnecessary desires not needs. We should carefully consider our options also balance our time and activities.

More wonders.

Today it may be thought that drawing has little significance other than an enjoyable pastime. This is not the reason why I am not drawing. The reason is I have been enticed into buying a digital camera and a computer I have taken the tempting bait I am hooked like a greedy fish.

There are other reasons I am drawing less. Pauline and I are caring for a two and a half acres property; it is wonderful to be gardening, watching seeds grow, caring for hens and roosters, turning the soil, with the fowls following scratching in the soil, There fresh eggs are pure gold reflecting their natural happy lifestyle. I am also learning to play a ukulele my son gave me and practicing the Chinese way of painting.

Take a look at Pauline’s blog pommepal@wordpress.com to see more photos and details of our adventures in Malanda and activities on the property in a forest setting. You will see pictures worth a thousand words and words worth reading. Pauline is now drawing really well and her photography justifies the invention of the camera.

Free range, every chook should live this way.

Free range, every fowl should live this way.

All our inventions are wonderful if used to enhance the joy of life. We may overcome the obstruction of time but we can never triumph over time. That is impossible, for man is mortal and time never ends. Time moves relentlessly, we must use it well and enjoy as it is limited. No matter how many short cut inventions we acquire, never forget our time is still the more valuable.
