What can be achieved if we work at it.

Weeding the Garden.

Pauline at work.

Pauline at work.

Every problem is an opportunity for growth. Life is a problem if we think what is taught in the school room is all we need to know. Learning should extend beyond the classroom. We must think for our self and look for facts to substantiate what we are told. We need more than blind faith in others.

Jack plaing in the garden.

Jack playing in the garden.

Weeds grow and flourish with no assistance from the gardener. In the garden of our mind weeds can thrive if we are not aware and constantly weeding out the unwanted negative thoughts.

Zen Garden ,note the tree shadow on the rock.

Plant instead seeds of love, hope, peace and contentment. They will grow and produce medicine that will cure hate and despair and calming the stress in our life. Grow strong by planting good wholesome seeds.

Focus your mind on good and feed good thoughts into your mind as everything you experience influences your mind either positively or negatively.

Distance yourself from the toxic poison, that is too plentiful, in the modern world.

Weeds are always trying to invade.

Weeds are always trying to invade.

In technical terms all the sensory perception you come in contact with affect the neural activity in your brain. Repeated experiences leave lasting changes in the brain. You could say repeated thoughts and actions form habits that can be beneficial or detrimental, depending on what you come in contact with.

Zigzagging bright contrast.

Zigzagging bright contrast.

To find happiness, peace and contentment you need to plant good seeds in the garden of your mind and repeatedly weed out weeds that are overrunning and destroying your beautiful, peaceful garden.

A feast for the eyes.

A feast for the eyes.

The underlying cause of all life’s wonders and woes, man has created or destroyed, all the joy or pain can be traced to what man has planted in his brain, the garden of his mind.

A joy to behold.

A joy to behold.

Over centuries of history man has planted mostly weeds in the garden of his mind. The seeds of ignorance, fear, greed and hate flourished. Ignorance created gods, fear created submission to shaman, witch doctors and priests that claimed they could communicate with a god or the gods. Greed, hate and ignorance flourished under these conditions till the renaissance.

A star for perfection.

A star for perfection.

These mistakes must be put behind us. We should think for ourselves not blindly believing comments from witch doctors, spin doctors, or media rubbish.

Nourishment from the garden.

Nourishment from the garden.

A point I made in my post ‘Elvis Lives’ shows one way to calculate the truth. Occam’s Razor is another problem solving principal that can be explained this way, ‘assume that the most straight forward or simplest explanation is the most likely to be the truth.’ I believe looking at people’s past history and their motives for making a statement helps make a correct decision on the value of their words.

The love of a garden...

The love of a garden…

Try to avoid most of the unsavoury, think and act positive. One suggestion is watch the news but not every time the same dreadful news is repeated. My wish is by keeping actively weeding you garden you harvest an abundance of nutrious vegetables, fruit and the flowers bloom in splendour.

is a garden of love.

Book Inn..

Book Inn..

Slow down don’t slow up.

Lately I have been absorbed reading instead of writing. The books I have been reading have made me realise how little I know. And yet I am far more knowledgeable than I used to be, at least I now know how to enjoy life.

What else is it for?

What else is it for?

Knowing the unsatisfactory changing nature of life. I do not cling to things and am contented rather than happy. My lifelong goal is self improvement, acquiring knowledge rather than possessions.

I gave my copy away I went to the library revise.

I went to the library to read it again I gave my copy away.

I would describe this as contentment rather than happiness. Learning to appreciation the good in my life.

 To make you smile.

To make you smile.

Ignorance is the cause of unhappiness. To enjoy life one must be disciplined in doing what is necessary to stay healthy in both body and mind. The one thing we should not be ignorant of is nothing lasts. Everything has a use by date.

You may not buy this one it is a gift.

You may not buy this one it is a gift, complements of Buddhist society Malaysia.

We can prolong the life of things by maintaining them properly, then they will serve us well. To care for things we need the knowledge to know how. Over the years I have learned a few life skills.

It is no secret any more.

It is no secret any more.

I try to pass them on, but you can find better qualified writers than me. You just need to be very selective in sorting out whose opinion to follow. Is it fact or fiction, is it rubbish I am feeding my mind on? Both body and mind need wholesome nourishment to stay healthy.

I am pleased how I am doing, keeping fit and inspiring others. They made me ‘member of the month’ at the Burleigh, World Gym. I was requested to write this comment. I now am fitted out in really smart gym cloths all part of the honour.

The matador, no bull.

“Who is the old bloke sweating on the x trainer?”world gym

“That is Jack he used to be a construction worker, a rigger to be precise.”

Great game for a young bloke to earn a crust. Plenty of exercise climbing up on the steel purlins, riding the crane hook. Man those were the days before the safety regulations took all the buzz out of it.

The problem is if you do a good job they promote you. Most of the fun goes out of it and it can get stressful.

Tim wants to be like me, when he has been 83 years at the gym.

Tim wants to be like me, when he has been 83 years at the gym.

The way around that is go to a gym and get rid of the stress. Get the endorphin circulating, it is better than chocolate. Oh! You see eye candy everywhere in a gym, a treat for every taste, the blokes and the girls. The great people that you become friends with in a gym like World Gym, Burleigh, is another incentive to workout.

Note the caption on the wall.

Note the caption on the wall.

I am 83 but when I am mixing in with all these positive, fit people I can forget I am past my use by date. Three score and ten I never put too much faith in ancient writing and doctors are ok in an emergency but do not leave it up to them to keep you fit. You are better of at the gym.

You need facts not fiction.

That burka could be hiding a weapon of mass destruction.

That burka could be hiding a weapon of mass destruction.

What has caused our disagreements and arguments? Our problems stem from ignorance and they continue because of ignorance. Other defilements such as wanting possessions, power and position over others also play a big part.

The indigenous people of Australian needed nothing more than to be hunter gatherers.

The indigenous people of Australian needed nothing more than to be hunter gatherers.

Primitive man was ignorant of the causes of the elements that controlled his survival. Animism was an attempt to explain, the sun and rain and all the elements affecting his survival. This gave birth to shamans and witch- doctors, clever, devious people that claimed they could communicate with the e spirits world. This gave them standing and power in the tribe.

Australian Aborigines understood nature and had no need of technology.

Australian Aborigines understood nature and had no need of technology.

This was in the time of the hunter gathers as man progressed to domesticating animals and cultivating crops he became less nomadic. Villages grew and man became more reliant on the clever ones to lead them.

They had their paradise taken over.

They had their paradise taken over.

Cities and civilisations were formed. A clever leader created gods and raised taxes to build temples and idols of their gods. Many gods were created to meet all occasions. A hierarchy of priests invented dogmas controlling the people with fearful gods. Sultans and kings consulted the priests on how to manage their people.

Tens of thousands of years is said they lived in harmony with nature.

Tens of thousands of years it is beleived they lived in harmony with nature.

Having many gods caused discord in the community, as it does to this day. Abraham united his people by giving them a vengeful jealous all powerful god that would not allow worship of other gods. Although the Jews were his chosen people they have been homeless and persecuted throughout history.

Suwon a walled city South Korea 30 km from Seoul.

Suwon a walled city South Korea 30 km from Seoul.

Strong walls were necessary to protect crops from animal invasion backed up with armies, to protect the wealth of prestigious rulers and their religious priests. Many rulers were psychopaths. All were sick some proclaiming Divine right some claiming to actually be gods. Greed ruled as it does to this day. Greed goes with ignorance, as wisdom is followed by peace and contentment.

This is not a rescue helicopter.

This is not a rescue helicopter.

Knowledge is not synonymous with wisdom, knowledge gave man bronze, iron, steel, gunpowder and the atom bomb. The technology we have today all came from knowledge. Technology allowed the powerful to invade, plunder, dominate and take control of other countries. Technology correctly used benefits man, but the ignorant abuse it. Wisdom must be practiced in the use of technology.

Modern technology terribly abused, sign in war museum Canberra.

Modern technology terribly abused, sign in war museum Canberra.

That very brief outline of the history of man, if taken seriously and followed up by diligent research, from proven sauces, will contribute to enlightenment. Feeding the mind on nourishing wholesome food is the way to bring peace into our life. There are still foolish people that believe witch-doctors and cunning leaders. These gullible people are not evil it is what they accept without question that is evil.

A Tranquil Trip.

For our friend June’s birthday we decided to take her and her husband for a scenic drive and lunch. That is what we did for Rex’s birthday and we all enjoyed that. Pauline did the organising, we are fortunate having Pauline and living in the midst of a scenic wonderland.

It was a perfect day but that’s what they say about this area one day sunny the next day perfect. We headed south across the border turning off the highway to drive beside the Tweed River to our first stop at Tumbulgum.

The Tumbulgum Tavern was established in 1887 it was the regions first unlicensed grog shop providing for the Red Cedar timber cutters. It is now licensed, still serving up refreshments but to far different type of person.

Passing the fields of sugar cane and the processing plant is a beautiful drive. The steam billowing from the chimney of the plant in puffy, white, swirling clouds against the clear blue sky is a fascinating sight. We parked at Murwillumbah Visitors Information Centre, this is one of the best Information Centres in Australia and they are all good. On our trip around Australia the first thing we would look for was the big blue ‘i’ leading to the local Visitors Information.

We were fortunate in having the resident artist to show us around. He was a busy man but I got him to pose with his latest painting.

Then we had a leisurely browse around. Watching the videos and soaking up information on the area, it is really a wonder-land.

Walkers working up an appetite at the entrance to café.

The cafe is in 6 hectares of rustic gardens where you can sit at secluded tables by a calming stream. That makes waiting for your meal a pleasure if I did not have friends for company I could quietly meditate here.

The fruit is about half ready.

We each chose different meals and savoured the delicious taste and enjoyed the whole experience. The authors of the book ‘The Happiness Hypotheses,’  did a survey and found that having a meal with friends is one of the most enjoyable things we can do. With this exquisite food in natures tropical garden we feel the ‘Force’ is with us or perhaps we are blessed.

I thought we will have to bring our next visitors out to this cafe there is so much to enjoy around what is referred to as the scenic rim. Link to the café,

This is how I remember it.

This is how I remember it.

Memories of spilt coffee.

Those were the days my friend, we thought they would never end.

Those were the days my friend, we thought they would never end.

It is no good crying over spilt coffee on a white tablecloth. It is bad enough staining the table-cloth without letting it spoil your day. Why worry if you can do something to fix it, there is no problem. If it cannot be fixed worry does no good. This is what you can do about the spilt coffee on the table-cloth; ASAP soak the table-cloth in cold water. Clinging to and fretting over little mishaps is a waste of time. Digging up past memories of misfortune is like exhuming a decomposing corpse; they are better left to rest in peace. Or as the case could be, rest in broken pieces. Nothing lasts forever all is subject to change both the good and the bad.  It is best not to completely forget those misadventures, just do not dwell on them. By not fully forgetting in the future you will spill less coffee.

Let us not forget.

Let us not forget.

I wonder who is kissing her now; I wonder who’s looking into her eyes, telling her lies, breathing sighs. There are those bitter-sweet memories. Let us not get too sentimental or maudlin, that was then, this is now.  By now she is way past those kinds of kisses and has far too many wrinkles to be taken in by blarney. I have never lied; though, I may have handled the truth a little carelessly and that is what spills coffee.

That what how it was, it has all changed.

That’s how it was, it has all changed.

That was yesterday’s bad news. This is the stop-press news, today’s news, and it is all good news. The good news you have been patiently waiting for. It does not matter what the headlines are, it is all good news, if we can accept work as a challenge, or a lesson, or a labour of love. AS when we are good to others we plant a seeds that will feed us in the future. To foster good fortune plant plenty of good seed and care for them with love. The love that does not leaves you wondering who is kissing her now, but the love that is only concerned about her welfare and happiness. Selfless love asks for nothing in return or it becomes a commercial deal.

Forget your age dance with the children.

Forget your age dance with the children.

The PC or iPad are far better than TV, you have more interaction with them. Although they can also be miss used or over used. These are useful things to remember along with the good times. File the other negative memories in a folder with an obscure name so they are difficult to recall. Computer nerds will understand this. Other people who are occupied with something active and invigorating will have the heart pumping, the blood flowing and have no time for remorse. You can work off a lot of tension when you are engaged in physical activity.

Words in a frame, were they ever spoken?

Words in a frame, were they ever spoken?

Actions are more effective than words. You can read a recipe-book full of culinary delights and remain hungry. It is the action when we bite into the food savouring the texture, tasting  and chewing it thoroughly extracting all essence, before letting it slip down the strawberry lane, that our hunger is appeased. It is no good giving words to the starving, or kind thoughts, even prays are useless.

Do all those TV ads satisfy our hunger, all they do is make us want more and feed our greed?

Our world is being hijacked, taken over by commercialism and our mindless inactivity is letting it happen. Open your eyes and open a book and read for a change. You may like to read “Fast Food Nation.” By Eric Schlosser. It spills more than coffee, it spills the beans.

To be always wanting is to be never satisfied.

To be always wanting is to be never satisfied.

Why were they the ‘good old days,’ when I could piss over the moon, (no prostrate problems) no TV, no financial worries? Most of us have fond memories of our childhood activity, think of the simple pleasures we had. Today children are being taken over by TV and molested by advertising. No need to completely give up the things we enjoy just be aware of what is beneficial. By mindlessly sitting and letting big corporate business dictate to us what we must have, makes people want what they don’t needed. You will not spill coffee if, you break the habit, drink a glass of clear water, to flush your system. The caffeine is just waste your system has to expel.

In fear of our fellow man we bread fear in our neighbours.

In fear of our fellow-man we breed fear in our neighbours.

Bad memories can be compensated by a bad memory. Memories are history and the winners record the history and the losers are left with regrets. When history is honestly looked at, were they discoverers or invaders, were they settlers or squatters; are they freedom fighters or vicious, greedy, guerrillas? They were the enemy, why are they now our friends?

If you want to see it from their point of view you have to change your position to see their view-point.

To stand in their position you will have a different perspective or your picture will be distorted. Was it necessary all the carnage, or was it only to promote business, producing bombs to blow up and destroy to create work to rebuild? We must remember, at the end of the day, at the going down of the sun, lest we forget and spill more coffee.

Love to see the beauty of a sunrise but for some it has set.

I held a height position on The Snowy Mountain Project.

I held a high position on The Snowy Mountain Project.

Do What Ever You Like.

How I won the rat race, doing what I liked and being paid to enjoy myself.
I never needed a fast car when I was young or to take up some extreme sport to get my adrenalin buzz. I was paid to ride a crane hook and show-off high up on the steel purlins, what a buzz and no danger of snake bite.

There were other thrills.

There were other thrills.

I love the smell of bread baking and getting my work done early. So my first job was in a bakery the work gets done by midday and I could go swimming. I also like money and labourers on building sights were being paid more than I was earning in the bakery.

I gave up the bakery job and chased the gravy train for a fatter pay packet in the construction game.
There was a down turn in the building boom, I was retrenched, that was the word used instead of put off. As often happens what looks like a problem turns out to our advantage. One should never get upset when things do not go as we plan, it often turns out better in the long run.

I was taken to the open hearth furnace where a 250 ton gantry crane was being built. I followed the boss up a series of wooden ladders lashed to the end column. It was scary up there walking along the crane track. I thought if I trip on the hog-ties I am going to get electrocuted on the wires and  fall in the soaking-pits where the steel ingots softened for rolling, if I escape that the sudden stop after falling about 80 feet would be really bad news.
We had to reach out to a ladder then step on to it, that was a real challenge. I made it and I had never felt so hyped-up.

New Plymouth Power Project, things get serious.

I was introduced to the head rigger. Then Sam Treseter, the man that led the way up, said. “There is an easier way up here I took you short cut.” I think he said that so my new work mates would know I had passed the test.
Rigging has more ups than downs, no pun intended, from then on I was paid for exercising and getting a buzz, showing off.

On top of the world, N. P.P.P.

On top of the world, N. P.P.P.

As a 20 year old, I was driven by the pursuit of money and the pleasure of spending it, having what I considered a good time.
It was not all wasted on frivolous things. I went around the world in the 60s, not as a tourist, I got off the beaten track hitch hiking and mixing with the locals. I only speak English so it was a real adventure at times.
I learned a smile is the same in all languages, A smile will get you a ride where a worried look makes you look desperate and perhaps dangerous.
That smile became a habit with me if I am finding the going tough I smile. Then I believe my own smile and feel good.

When you can earn a living doing what you like, you have it made. You have  escaped the rodent treadmill and life is a work of joy. When you love what you do you do it so well you get promoted. This change was all for the best, I was no longer capable of being the admired show off. The young blokes won  the show-off title from me. I became the brains of the outfit or mother hen.

Wet steal and rubber sneakers are deadly, so on rainy days I would run a class on rigging safety. Based on a “Guide to Riggers.” by the Australian Labor Department, New Zealand had no equivalent in the seventies. A lot of the fun went out of rigging. I applied for a job on quality inspection on the Maui Pipe Line Project http://mauipipeline.co.nz/ and to my surprise was successful.

That is a story I should tell you as it shows how lucky I am.

Three of many Australian flags.

Three of many Australian flags.

Gods Own Country, Man owns nothing.

It is said first in best dressed.

It is said first in best dressed.

Dorothea Mackellar wrote the poem, My Country, while in England pining for Australia. I like this poem although I realize Australia is not my country. I do not own it I was only fortunate enough to be born here. Australia is my home no matter where I roam, I still call Australia home. We are one but we are many from all the lands on earth we come. This I really am in tune with. No one really owns anything it is all on loan. To quote, Shakespeare, All the world’s a stage and all men and women merely players on it. They have their entries and their exits. Realizing all things are passing and we are also impermanent we become less grasping and possessive.

Here's mud in your eye, Is a toast.

Here’s mud in your eye, Is a toast.

We are often blind to obvious facts. The indigenous people inhabited Australia when adventurous sea-farers claimed to have discovered a new land. Waving their flag they patriotically planted it in the earth declaring this land is ours. The hardy pioneer settlers followed clearing the land, fencing and bringing in their cattle. Polluting the aboriginal water holes and fencing their hunting grounds. My, brave adventurous pioneers, forefathers suffered the droughts and flooding rains. I admire their tenacity but in hindsight recognize their ignorance.

They called it home.

They called it home.

Jews, Christians and Muslims are still fighting over their promised lands. When will we learn possessing, hording and clinging will never bring peace? This is not in accordance with what their God advocates. I imagine all this could be blowin in the wind, if we stopped wanting, clinging and possessing. Took a deep breath of the free life-giving, air and meditated on what is truly ours to own. It is all impermanent, passing we can cling to nothing for very long.

A hard life no TV.

A hard life no TV.

It is not your country Dorothea, come back home to warmth and love. This world is home to the family of man our island home in the infinite cosmos. Everything in this world is interdependent sharing is necessity. Possessing is not a necessary requirement to enjoying something. The person that hoards riches invites crime and envy. Property comes with liabilities of storing, protecting and maintaining. When we give a kind word or a smile we see how it enhances our life. Then we can progress, giving more substantial aid to those in need.

Four horned off road transport.

Four horned off-road transport.

There is no room for pining if we are concerned in helping the less fortunate. We will not be blind to the obvious that we share this world and must consider others needs and different ways of life. Those flag waving patriotic overzealous empire builders, drew lines on maps cutting up countries and plundering the wealth, with no consideration of the original inhabitants. With disregard to others feelings they invaded lands, enforcing their language, religion and way of life on the natives. Much of the conflict in the world today is a legacy of those empire builders.

They all call Australia home.

They all call Australia home.

We need to stop being dogmatic in our beliefs and try to understand others beliefs. Misunderstanding and ignorance must be over come if we are to have peace on earth. There are no bad people they are sick or ignorant. Education is necessary to counter lack of knowledge and for people who are sick from lack of life’s necessities we need to share all we can. This is the only way to live in harmony with our fellow-man.

The reaction to force is opposing force. Wars create vengeance in the defeated and grief to the victorious as a war is never won without casualties. Man is a tear drop in an ocean of sorrow. Life is fleeting, and the sorrow is, it is too late when the bubble bursts to repentant. It is satisfying to give while you live and die in peace with no regrets. Our path through life is like a speeding bullet quickly reaching the target and the target is death. We own nothing we leave it all behind. Do not make waves as you sail through life. You cannot remain clean stirring up mud. To have no regrets leave clear water in your wake.

What is left at end of the day.

What is left at end of the day.

When waving the flag in god’s own country realise it is not yours.

This flag has a lot of history, written by the victors.

This flag has a lot of history, written by the victors.
