Book Inn..

Book Inn..

Slow down don’t slow up.

Lately I have been absorbed reading instead of writing. The books I have been reading have made me realise how little I know. And yet I am far more knowledgeable than I used to be, at least I now know how to enjoy life.

What else is it for?

What else is it for?

Knowing the unsatisfactory changing nature of life. I do not cling to things and am contented rather than happy. My lifelong goal is self improvement, acquiring knowledge rather than possessions.

I gave my copy away I went to the library revise.

I went to the library to read it again I gave my copy away.

I would describe this as contentment rather than happiness. Learning to appreciation the good in my life.

 To make you smile.

To make you smile.

Ignorance is the cause of unhappiness. To enjoy life one must be disciplined in doing what is necessary to stay healthy in both body and mind. The one thing we should not be ignorant of is nothing lasts. Everything has a use by date.

You may not buy this one it is a gift.

You may not buy this one it is a gift, complements of Buddhist society Malaysia.

We can prolong the life of things by maintaining them properly, then they will serve us well. To care for things we need the knowledge to know how. Over the years I have learned a few life skills.

It is no secret any more.

It is no secret any more.

I try to pass them on, but you can find better qualified writers than me. You just need to be very selective in sorting out whose opinion to follow. Is it fact or fiction, is it rubbish I am feeding my mind on? Both body and mind need wholesome nourishment to stay healthy.

1932 the bridge the hands and hope I had to be in this photo.

I am pleased how I am doing, keeping fit and inspiring others. They made me ‘member of the month’ at the Burleigh, World Gym. I was requested to write this comment. I now am fitted out in really smart gym cloths all part of the honour.

The matador, no bull.

The matador, no bull.

“Who is the old bloke sweating on the x trainer?”world gym

“That is Jack he used to be a construction worker, a rigger to be precise.”

Great game for a young bloke to earn a crust. Plenty of exercise climbing up on the steel purlins, riding the crane hook. Man those were the days before the safety regulations took all the buzz out of it.

The problem is if you do a good job they promote you. Most of the fun goes out of it and it can get stressful.

Tim wants to be like me, when he has been 83 years at the gym.

Tim wants to be like me, when he has been 83 years at the gym.

The way around that is go to a gym and get rid of the stress. Get the endorphin circulating, it is better than chocolate. Oh! You see eye candy everywhere in a gym, a treat for every taste, the blokes and the girls. The great people that you become friends with in a gym like World Gym, Burleigh, is another incentive to workout.

Note the caption on the wall.

Note the caption on the wall.

I am 83 but when I am mixing in with all these positive, fit people I can forget I am past my use by date. Three score and ten I never put too much faith in ancient writing and doctors are ok in an emergency but do not leave it up to them to keep you fit. You are better of at the gym.

Furry nice blanket.

Furry nice blanket.

What do you want?

She was drawing a heart on her hand.

She was drawing a heart on her hand.

I would like to weave, warm, woolly, words, into a blanket to protect and comfort you on a cold dismal day. To do more than please you, like the fleeting pleasure of youthful love. Like those wonderful shooting stars of pleasure that burnt out in our atmosphere.

They look stable and contented.

They look stable and contented.

Happiness is more stable than pleasure. Happiness is where the bubbling mountain streams combined their strengths, flowing together forming the source of a mighty river. Sharing and appreciating all that passes. Happiness is living with love.

Happy and couldn't care less what you think.

Happy and couldn’t care less what you think.

To know pleasures pass and although happiness can stay with us to the end, the end is inevitable.   This is not a morbid way to think, it is a fact and when realised, brings joy. Understanding our life is passing, we stop cling to the fleeting pleasures and share happiness and good fortune.

Sharing there joy with "Mustang Sally.

Sharing their joy with “Mustang Sally.

Loving and sharing is the key to the treasures of happiness and the joy locked in life’s treasure chest. Life’s treasures cannot be hoarded in a bank to appreciate. They must be shared to appreciate and be appreciated by everyone, to bring peace and contentment to the world.

I good way to spend the day and you don't need a lot of money.

I good way to spend the day and you don’t need a lot of money.

Wisdom is knowing as the poet said “Pleasures are like snowflakes on the river one moment white then lost forever”. Letting go and sharing brings happiness.

The closest to snow in Queensland.

The closest to snow in Queensland.

Desiring more is disastrous; wanting is the problem child that is conceived of lust. The offspring of wisdom is contentment.

This is not the Suwannee River.

This is not the Swannee River.

Wanting for nothing, ironically, is to have all we need. The struggle for more never brings lasting happiness. Luxuries and status symbols are not necessary. Understanding this promotes love, happiness and contentment. Appreciating what you have, is to be wrapped in a blanket of contentment, protected from the cold, outside world, warm in your inner world with peace of mind. You cannot control the outer world; you can control peace in your own mind.

Keep it wall in balance.

Keep it all in balance.

They all say like Superman fighting for truth and justice.

You need facts not fiction.

That burka could be hiding a weapon of mass destruction.

That burka could be hiding a weapon of mass destruction.

What has caused our disagreements and arguments? Our problems stem from ignorance and they continue because of ignorance. Other defilements such as wanting possessions, power and position over others also play a big part.

The indigenous people of Australian needed nothing more than to be hunter gatherers.

The indigenous people of Australian needed nothing more than to be hunter gatherers.

Primitive man was ignorant of the causes of the elements that controlled his survival. Animism was an attempt to explain, the sun and rain and all the elements affecting his survival. This gave birth to shamans and witch- doctors, clever, devious people that claimed they could communicate with the e spirits world. This gave them standing and power in the tribe.

Australian Aborigines understood nature and had no need of technology.

Australian Aborigines understood nature and had no need of technology.

This was in the time of the hunter gathers as man progressed to domesticating animals and cultivating crops he became less nomadic. Villages grew and man became more reliant on the clever ones to lead them.

They had their paradise taken over.

They had their paradise taken over.

Cities and civilisations were formed. A clever leader created gods and raised taxes to build temples and idols of their gods. Many gods were created to meet all occasions. A hierarchy of priests invented dogmas controlling the people with fearful gods. Sultans and kings consulted the priests on how to manage their people.

Tens of thousands of years is said they lived in harmony with nature.

Tens of thousands of years it is beleived they lived in harmony with nature.

Having many gods caused discord in the community, as it does to this day. Abraham united his people by giving them a vengeful jealous all powerful god that would not allow worship of other gods. Although the Jews were his chosen people they have been homeless and persecuted throughout history.

Suwon a walled city South Korea 30 km from Seoul.

Suwon a walled city South Korea 30 km from Seoul.

Strong walls were necessary to protect crops from animal invasion backed up with armies, to protect the wealth of prestigious rulers and their religious priests. Many rulers were psychopaths. All were sick some proclaiming Divine right some claiming to actually be gods. Greed ruled as it does to this day. Greed goes with ignorance, as wisdom is followed by peace and contentment.

This is not a rescue helicopter.

This is not a rescue helicopter.

Knowledge is not synonymous with wisdom, knowledge gave man bronze, iron, steel, gunpowder and the atom bomb. The technology we have today all came from knowledge. Technology allowed the powerful to invade, plunder, dominate and take control of other countries. Technology correctly used benefits man, but the ignorant abuse it. Wisdom must be practiced in the use of technology.

Modern technology terribly abused, sign in war museum Canberra.

That very brief outline of the history of man, if taken seriously and followed up by diligent research, from proven sauces, will contribute to enlightenment. Feeding the mind on nourishing wholesome food is the way to bring peace into our life. There are still foolish people that believe witch-doctors and cunning leaders. These gullible people are not evil it is what they accept without question that is evil.

Ever changing.

Ever changing.

Passing not clinging.

Ripples.

Ripples.

Change is a law of nature. Everything changes with time. Everything alters in some way; impermanence is the nature of things. Realising nothing is permanent everything is passing, in a state of transition. Understanding this is the beginning of enlightenment. The Buddhist calls true enlightenment nirvana, a stillness of mind free of desire, aversion and delusion. The main cause of suffering is desire to possess something that is not permanent in its intrinsic nature. Realising this fact frees one from the burden of attachment.

This link to The Enthusiastic Buddhist explains further.

Demonstration of walking on water.

Demonstration of walking on water.

Everything is passing change is the very nature of life, grasping and clinging to things is the cause of much of our suffering. Fresh, new, pristine, is the fleeting pleasure that cannot be maintained, weathering, damage and disappointment follow. Everything changes, ages, dies and decays; this is nature’s interconnected cycle. Man is no exception, the fact we are all part of this cosmic soup. Interconnected with all in life we are part of the whole and at one with life. Knowing this we stop being small minded realising we are an infinitesimal part of the whole environment.

Flowers changing to fruit.

Flowers changing to fruit.

Impermanence does not diminish our enjoyment of life, it enhances it.  We appreciate the present experience, enjoying the now. The fleeting present now is not wasted regretting the past or hurrying to an unknown future.  Being aware of these facts and accepting them as part of life makes one realise the futility of grasping and clinging. We become more caring and sharing and the real good news is that hard-times change too.

Like new and the old.

Like new and the old.

One thing we are reluctant to apply the fact of impermanence to, is our own life. We want to be an exception to the natural law because we are attached to this form of existence. Attached to people and things we love. All the things we falsely think of as ‘mine’, in reality we own nothing. All will slip through our fingers like the sand in an hourglass, consumed by time. Me, my and mine are an illusion so deeply ingrained in our mind we have invented myths and blindly ignore the truth of impermanence.

It is more fun not clinging.

It is more fun not clinging.

Why are people that believe in life after death still afraid to take a chance and explore life? Clinging to life inhibits people from experiencing many joys in life. Caution is wise but fear is one of life’s poisons.  Do not be afraid, most people are honest, kind and helpful, if trusted and respected. Like wild creatures, if not threatened, they will not harm you. Most feared things are no more dangerous than a picnic lunch.

Used well and well used.

Used well and well used.

Being aware and understanding calms our fears.  Being aware of how our own emotions and actions effect a situation. Understanding grasping and clinging is foolish, caring and sharing is wise, a win win situation.  Change is inevitable all we can do is change our ways to fit in with nature’s law of change. Change our attitude if necessary as what we give is what we get. So give life your best and life will be reciprocal.

Every day appreciate the passing beauty.

Every day appreciate the passing beauty.

Ataraxia.

The only care is a caring Dad.

The only care is a caring Dad.

Ataraxia is peace and freedom from fear and aponia means absence from pain.
The Greek philosopher Epicurus believed the goal in life was happiness and pleasure, he defined pleasure as the absence of pain.

A simple joy for Mum and her boy.

A simple joy for Mum and her boy.

Aponia is the pleasure one has when they are free from want or pain. He advocated a simple life, this is more like Minimalist, than Hedonism.

What a way to spend the day.

What a way to spend the day.

A couple of hundred years before Epicurus the Buddha found freedom from pain and suffering in a similar way.

Especially if you catch something.

Especially if you catch something.

Epicurus school of thinkers met in a garden and were the first to admit women into their school and he emphasised friendship as an important ingredient to happiness. Like The Buddha he said nothing should be believed till tested by practice and logical deduction.

I feel for the fish but he was trying to steal my bait.

I feel for the fish but he was trying to steal my bait.

The Buddha never entered into the God debate. Whereas to Epicurus fearing and worshiping gods did not fit in with ataraxy.

This is better than watching some one TV, have fun.

This is better than watching some one on TV, having fun.

To quote Epicurous, ‘It is preferable not to commit crimes, even secret ones, since there will always be anxiety over the possibility of detection, and this will disrupt the tranquility or ataraxy that is the chief basis of happiness in life.’ Gods were unnecessary in his opinion, gods were useful only as an example in life.

This is not John Travolta and Olivia Newton John.

This is not John Travolta and Olivia Newton John.

Like  Democritus he believed in the atomic theory. That matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms, from the Greek word indivisible.

My pommepal miles from home.

Our understanding of atoms has come a long way since then. The cathode ray tube the basis of television, x-ray and nuclear fission.

Creating not spoiling.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki 1945 is a long way from ataraxy.

Enjoying life with loved ones.

Enjoying life with loved ones.

Can we get back to Ataraxia, a state of freedom from anxiety and distress, to
tranquility and a peaceful state of mind?

This is how it is done.

This is how it is done.

It will take some education in understanding the true nature of things.
If we have not got the self-control to stay thinking and acting decently.
We need an ethical personal trainer in the gym of life,

Here is my personal trainer.

Here is my personal trainer.

May be this is where the God-fearing idea originated.

Together and looking with appreciation.

Together and looking with appreciation.

We should be able to live without fear, fear is a poison that kills loving kindness.
We are made up of atoms that will one day disperse and become part of the cosmic eternal oneness.

All together in the swim.

All together in the swim

As we all bleed the same colour we all decompose to feed the circle of everlasting life, There is no need to fear death while enjoying life and when dead sentient beings feel nothing. Dead men don’t cry.
Death is going home to where we came from before birth, at one connected with all.

Just take it easy.

Just take it easy.

Get with it! Live life with respect and appreciation, savour the taste of this passing experience. Delight in friendship, relish the nourishment that sustains you, love life and it will love you. I hope after this somewhat heavy meal you do not suffer indigestion.

Cows and sheep would agree,

If you think animal lovers are sentimental.

You can just try this out as experimental.

Try to look a cow in the eye,

while eating a steak and kidney pie.

This has nothing to do with piety.

Could you eat dog or horse?

Then eat a cat for second course.

People may think pigs dirty and unclean,

People may think me very rude,

Are you over weight at all?

How is your cholesterol?

My words are quiet humane,

 what you’re eating is insane.

Eating dead bodies does not sound healthy or nice;

Say abattoirs instead of slaughterhouse and you won’t think twice.

You probably will not like what I have said,

if your stomach’s a grave yard for the dead.

This dog would rock you.

To eat this dog would rock you.

Where is the Answer?

Fantastic.

If I believed in miracles I would pray, the unanswered prayer, peace on earth and good will to all mankind.

My quiet tranquil hide away.

My quiet tranquil hide away.

If I were a believer in the patriarchal God I would spend Jesus’s birthday in a secluded quiet place, calm and relaxed, paying thanks to my God for the natural wonders surrounding me. No matter what your beliefs are, being thankful, sharing and appreciating nature’s free gifts is a stress free way to spend every day.

There is serenity here also.

There is serenity here also.

From all the accounts I have read Jesus was a kind compassionate pacifist. I really do not think he would appreciate the frantic way many of his followers are celebrating his birthday. He would be appalled at the way our commercial society has capitalised on his birthday.

Love past present and future.

Love is not something you can buy and wrap up in coloured paper.

Just because I cannot bring myself to believe in miracles does not stop me from appreciating those that sincerely do believe. I still respect a person that follows an ethical path of loving kindness like Jesus exemplified.

Those that feel the need to visit loved ones during the festive season drive curiously, cautiously and carefully. To those that feel obligated to give gifts, be wise in what you can afford. Those with a weight problem, have the will power to show restraint. All things in moderation, never forget alcohol is a criminal, safe till it escapes from the bottle.

Enjoy the wonder of it all.

That’s what I want.

This is what they want for Christmas.

This is what they want for Christmas.

Too busy getting what I want to be aware of my surroundings. Preparing for tomorrow I miss out on today. I don’t like pain and suffering, still I may forget to appreciate and enjoy when I am well.

May be this is your Christmas wish.

May be this is your Christmas wish.

I need to slow down, become mindful, fully alert and aware. That life is passing me by while I want to be some were else. By clinging to the past or racing to the future and never at rest and not appreciating all I have now.

Just laid-back and enjoying life.

Just laid-back and enjoying life.

Stop take a deep breath of fresh air and realise it is a necessity you cannot live without. Appreciate the free fresh air and all the free gifts of nature missed while living in the past or desiring the impermanent fancies that never bring lasting satisfaction.

Some appear to have it all.

Some appear to have it all.

There is no time like the present. That present we are presented with is a gift; do not waste it, fretting over the past or dreaming of the future. The most important thing is what you are doing now.

Some cling to the past.

Some cling to the past.

Pay full attention the most important person in the world is the one you are with now.

Some want it all laid out.

Some want it all laid out.

Be fully engaged in whatever you are doing now.

Neat and tidy.

Neat and tidy.

A Buddhist saying is, ‘When you are washing dishes, wash dishes.’

Others want more.

Others want more.

This would still be applicable except for dishwashing machines. In our fast pace modern world we have exchanged washing dishes by hand for working to pay off a car to get us to work on time to pay off the vacuum cleaner, dishwasher and all the other wants, to keep up with the Joneses.

It don't come cheap.

It don’t come cheap.

Take a few deep breaths, calm the mind, meditate and focus on what is essential in your life. Concentrate on the natural beauty surrounding you. Look at what you have and be thankful

Simply the best.

Simply the best, sing-along..

.The choice is ours, what we want and what we need, what we own and what owns us, to follow the Joneses or think for ourselves. Decide what you want and give it your full attention.

This post is from a book that impressed me. The words are exactly how I try to live. But I could never convey them as well as, the book “Blossom,” by Michelle Merrifield. The author is a beautiful lady from the Gold Coast, Queensland, which accounts for her love of surfing.  The sample below may prompt you to read to the book.

Breath, bend, blossom is my humble interpretation of what they have taught me over the years and how I have come to apply lessons of yoga in my life;

Everyone can enjoy.

Everyone can enjoy.

That it starts with the breath, the life-force, the union between our individual spirits and the divine universal energy.

That our body is the temple that houses the spirit, so we bend and stretch and twist and fold to keep that temple healthy and strong;

The watchful eye in the sky keeps everyone safe.

The watchful eye in the sky keeps everyone safe.

It is only when we have trained the body, mind and soul that we can truly blossom and use the lessons of yoga to make the world a more beautiful and peaceful place.

Do not believe all you see and hear.

Do not believe all you see and hear.

Question the Source.

He repeats anything he rears.

He repeats anything he hears.

A fact is something known to be true an opinion is something said by someone it could be true or false.

Who advises the politicians at Parliament House, the White House and all the little houses.

Who advises the politicians at Parliament House, the White House and all the little houses.

An opinion is what someone thinks. It could be incorrect because they were misinformed or are deliberately lying to influence you.

The Indigenes People house at Canberra.

The Indigen0us People’s house at Canberra.

Question, have they an ulterior motive? Who is this person, can they be trusted, what are their qualifications and are they in a rational state of mind?

The other side of it.

The other side of it.

Assumptions and opinions can cause stress. Stress creates strong emotions and emotions strengthen our opinions. Someone walks past me in the street without speaking. Do I think, this person does not like me? This is not a fact; the fact is ‘they walked past me.’ It could be they did not see me. Knowing the facts helps us make wise unemotional decisions. We should ascertain if it is a fact, opinion, fiction, rumour, speculation or a lie before making a decision.

Respect is not too much to ask.

Respect is not too much to ask.

It may not be a proven fact and could be an opinion.  There are verifiable opinions, expert opinions and personal opinions. A Verifiable opinion is valid. An expert opinion is made by a person that has studied the subject and is an authority. A personal opinion, what a person believes is governed by his values, beliefs and emotions. We must ask where did this statement come from, did it come from the media? Then ask who owns the media, who has vested interest in these stories? An editor earns his living doing what the person in charge wants and he will be out of a job if he goes against the boss.

What a lot of garbage.

What a lot of garbage.

We need to think seriously about this because people like Rupert Murdoch own the media; you have to be sceptical when you know his history. It is interesting reading, though he would rather you read his newspaper or watch a soap opera on TV than read up on Wikipedia. This is an outline of what you will read on Wikipedia about him.

They have made a feature of it in Canberra.

They have made a feature of it in Canberra.

He inherited News Corporation, the second largest media conglomerate. He has been accused of hacking the phones of celebrities, royalty and the public. Refer to the Leveson Enquiry. He faced police and government investigation for bribery and corruption by the British Government and US FBI. He has a history of biased political support. If you like a love story there is something for you he has had three wives. The truth is hard to ascertain when we blithely listen to comment from the media.

There have been many distortions of the truth. I was told to fear people who are now our friends and trading partners. Any source of information that uses advertising to finance its operation is to be questioned. Do not believe all you see and hear no matter where it came from. Although this is my personal opinion, as I am not on anyone’s pay-roll.  You should still question it, by searching out the facts from a reliable source.

This is a better way.

This is a better attitude.
