This lets you know where we are.

This lets you know where we are.

Am I a Buddhist?

Pauline in action.

Pauline in action.

Pauline’s post about Watt Buddharangsee, meaning Move or Change Places Temple, prompted me to think, All schools of Buddhism have the basic logical (Dharma) teachings of The Buddha. The Four Noble Truths and The Eightfold Path.

This photo shows the wheel with eight spokes.

This shrine shows the wheel with eight spokes.

The countries of South East Asia that have adopted Buddhism have incorporated their own cultures and customs in it. This resulted in many different varieties of Buddhism.

Inside the Stupa.

Still the fundamental teachings are the same. To abstain from all kinds of evil, promote all that is beneficial and purify the mind.

Stupa out side.

Stupa out side.

To understand all things are impermanent and subject to change, abstain from all kinds of evil and personally develop ethical behaviour, as outlined in the Buddha’s basic teaching. Consequently there have been no major conflicts between different Buddhist religious groups.

Pauline put this photo in her post.

Pauline put this photo in her post.

The three major Abrahamic religions conversely are in aggressive conflict for domination. Regardless of the fact that their God, the one they claim to be almighty, condemns killing.

Why is this abandoned little church?

Why is this little church abandoned?

Perhaps Lau Tzu had it right when he said “The Tao that can be named is not the true Tao.” (The Tao is the inexplicable force that keeps the whole cosmos in equilibrium.) Another aspect of Taoism is yin and yang, when yin and yang are in balance it is believed to be perfect harmony. This is described as Wu Wei meaning in flow with nature.

The trees were an ideal setting for the Stupa.

The trees were an ideal setting for the Stupa.

I am not a Taoist, Buddhist, Hindu and defiantly not one of the many factions of the Abrahamic dogmas, Jews, Christians or Muslims with their multitude of denomination all arguing for dominance.

The trees looked good from all angles.

The trees looked good from all angles.

I believe they all have the same good basic ethics but much of the good is lost in the belief in the supernatural, other myths and wishful thinking.

We will start off cool.

We will start off cool.

Habitual walking.

Cool morning Yoga meditation on Bondi Beach.

Cool morning Yoga meditation on Bondi Beach.

Habitual walking is not as Thich Nhat Hanh, in his beautifully written book “Peace is Every Step.“ describes walking. What he describes is actually walking meditation. If you are an active person you may prefer this rather than sitting.

Some habits are not wise.

Some habits are not wise when you are not so sure-footed.

Mindful walking is a cognitive process you are conscious and aware. If we repeat anything often enough it becomes a habit. This is very useful it enables us to become skilled operators. As long as we do not get too inattentive and become prone to problems.

It could have been worse.

It could have been worse.

Habitual actions describe how we fly through life in a fog. We do not actually see where we are going we are traveling on auto pilot. Our thoughts are on some thing in the future or past, not focused on what we are doing.  Meditation teaches us how to stay focused. Those thoughtless actions are the cause of pain and suffering.

A stitch in me wastes time, but helps healing.

A stitch in me wastes time, but helps healing.

The Buddha Siddhartha Gautama said the first step on The Eight Fold Path is Understanding, next is right thinking the next that automatically follows is right actions. Then he discusses right occupation The Buddha is only interested in getting you into a good job. By good he means harmless and beneficial.

This is a good clean job, not paid for sitting down.

This is a good clean job, paid for sitting up.

You may be more interested in getting a well-paid occupation. I would also advise doing what you enjoy to earn an honest crust. Then making dough is a pleasure. People often say what line of work are you in. They used to say out on the construction site, “What’s your game, mate?” Back then, in the good old days, before tight safety regulations took the virtuosity out of it. I would say, “I am a rigger.” I loved my high position looking down on everyone. I was a young show off and got my thrills riding on the crane hook.

Climbing up steps to operate a tower crane, we used to use the hook and climb in the window.

Climbing up steps to operate a tower crane, we used to use the hook and climb in the window, in the good old days.

The young extroverts today (I dare not call then show-offs) have to hoon-around to get a buzz. Putting the public in danger and they do not get paid for it. Instead it costs them, for petrol their motorbike or car and on top of that they get fined.

The police love hoons, they are keeping them in a good exciting job.

The police love hoons, they are keeping them in a good exciting job.

Well I suppose they could say, “It is better than walking.”

I should have been walking.

I should have been walking.

The next steps to consider are right effort, right concentration and mindfulness, not to stepping off the path. It is human to be unmindful and inevitable to step off the path. When we take a wrong step it is no good placing blame or fretting. Just pick yourself up and try again. The same as you do in meditation when your mind wanders.  You can falter but never fail to try.

The Cure.

It is MADNESS but some will not see.

It is MADNESS but some will not see.

What is the cure for the stress in the fast pace modern world?

We could pray.

We could pray.

Is the detrimental effect the commercial system has on the environment causing us anxiety? Are we worrying that our protesting and complaining is futile against the multinational take over? Are we frustrated because advertising has invaded every available public space, as well as our home?

We could just drop out of the rat-race.

We could just drop out of the rat-race.

Should we just sit back and let the TV ads induce us to buy things we do not need?  Advertising plays on our ego enticing us to buy superfluous things, brand names are only superfluous status symbols. Ads keep us working at the treadmills turning the wheels of production. It is a vicious circle this tread mill, known as ‘the rat race’. How can one escape?

You may think I am full of rubbish.

You may think I am full of rubbish.

There is a way to stop this stress, it has been around for 2500 years, but The Buddha’s philosophy has been distorted. There is another easier way to escape the ‘rat race’. I could write volumes explaining this method and not do it as good as putting in a few link, for you to click on. If you are interested in taking some steps that will benefit you, the environment and the community in general, look at these links.

This is all unnecessary rubbish.

This is all unnecessary rubbish.

Books are better than passive TV watching. Most worthwhile things in life take an effort. Make the small effort to hit these links and learn what they have to say and from there to further helpful reading links.

Can you see, 'we are living in this as if there was another to go to.'

Can you see, ‘we are living on this planet as if there is another one to go to.’

We would all like to help right the wrongs in the world.

I ask myself, what am I doing, helping or hindering the problems in the world today?

I do not sign partitions or join in protests, I do write my blog, but is appealing to others going to fix anything.

I actually do nothing because this is an important concept in Taoism. What Lau Tzu calls ‘wu wei’: the action of non-action.

Natures Way.

Natures Way.

Natures way.

Simply beautiful.

Simply beautiful.

Standing in natures green cathedral blessed by serenity,

The forest is sacred; there is no better place to be.

Slow down to appreciate the beauty, smell the scent upon the breeze.

Listen to the bird songs and appreciate the trees.

Lao Tzu rode a buffalo that is considered slow today.

Lao Tzu trained his buffalo to support him on his ‘Way’.

Training the bufflo.

Training the buffalo.

Haste was not a priority he just went with the flow.

Today out on the road that is something we should know.

Walk to the valley, follow the mountain stream.

Meander to enjoy all nature’s gifts supreme.

Waddle by the watter.

Waddle by the water.

Stroll to the ocean, earth-out bare foot on the ground.

Let others wanting more, power the tread mill round.

Bath in the cleansing water, glad to be alive,

The wisdom is you need few things to survive.

Go with the flow.

Go with the flow.

The importance of time spent this way,

Is we are refreshed to earn our pay.

For necessities needed to sustain life.

Wanting more brings trouble and strife.

Lau Tzu spoke of yin and yang to balance work with play.

The Buddha taught wanting was a problem that got in the way.

Garden ornament.

Garden ornament.

To understand all in life flows like a mountain stream.

We cannot cling to water or capture a sunbeam.

When we have surplus to what we need,

Then to hoard not share is only greed.

Balance greed with kindness is wisdom too,

As helping others, brings happiness to you.

To give thanks to the inexplicable Tao, what’s in a name anyhow?

Nature's symble for The Eightfold Path.

Nature’s symbol for The Eightfold Path.

Appreciate with joy and delight,

Do not argue over who is right.

To appreciation nature’s gifts is a prayer to the supreme.

To argue over a name makes the beauty all obscene.

The stream runs to the ocean, every tear drop becomes one.

We all bleed the same colour, why can’t our life be more fun.

The storm has passed.

The storm has passed.

The tear drops fall like rain,

 All this fighting is insane.

Like the Christian who has found God I want to share with you.

A way to peace and contentment, that’s an admirable thing to do.

The joy that I have found.

I want to share around.

The light is behind the clouds and trees.

The light is behind the clouds and trees.

I do not think God was ever lost,

Man gets lost and pays the cost.

Lost unmindful of our emotion,

Like a storm raging on the ocean.

Stop look up at the stars above.

Do not kill the things you love.

The sand on the beach the stars in the sky,

We are so small you and I.

Thanks for another good morning.

Thanks for another good morning.

Life’s Stream.

These falls are not seen from the road so are often missed.

These falls are not seen from the road so are often missed.

Pleasures hurry by like a mountain stream,

kissed by the sunlight’s golden beam.

Gurgling happily, bubbling along

a child of the mountain singing Mother Nature’s song.

Borne in the mountains far from the ocean.

Born in the mountains far from the ocean.

All young play

 in a similar way

 joyful, joking full of fun

from sun up till the day is done.

The sun sinks low, the sparkle is gone

childhood passes, we must move on.

Soft patient water wears away hard rock.

Soft patient water wears away hard rock.

As we grow and mature

  pleasures in life become fewer.

Obligations and deadlines to meet,

work to ensure our life stays sweet.

As sure as the sun moves across the sky

all things in life are passing by.

One of natures free gifts, Ok two of natures gifts.

One of natures free gifts, Ok two of natures gifts.

Only gather what you need

 grasping more is only greed.

When we struggle for possessions

we have not learned our lessons.

The stream of life flows so fast

the joys of childhood do not last.

A t tranquil place to rest and let the world catch up.

A t tranquil place to rest and let the world catch up.

The water flows to a lower plain

it cannot go back up again.

Meandering slow it sings soft and low

there is only one way it can go.

Cool and refreshing.

Cool and refreshing.

Our body is mostly water if we dehydrate we die

We leave all our possessions and our loved ones may cry.

When water dries up in a puddle I know were the steam will go.

But when I dry up and my life is over will I go up or down below?

Life's stream has many changing moods.

Life’s stream has many changing moods.

As a tear drops in the ocean we are so very small.

Compared to the starry sky I am nothing at all.

Water returns to the sky above

the best we can do is leave memories of love.

The moon showing off.

The moon showing off.

From the heavens tear drops fall

running back to the oceans primeval call.

The clouds gather heralding rain

and the whole procedure starts again.

High above Cook Town.

High above Cook Town.

Man must return to mother earth

to nurture new things for rebirth.

The ego that once was me,

who knows what it will be,

does it really exist in me

or an allusion that I see.

The wanting dictator in my mind

that made me greedy and unkind,

keeping me desiring, wanting more

although I need nothing, I am not poor.

Stirring the mud, polluting the air

with an attitude of I do not care.

Water sings many songs.

Water sings many songs.

All beings need water and air to survive

nothing is so important to staying alive.

As the wheel of life rolls along

go with the flow, sing a song.

Slow down, let the water clear

to see our obligations here

are to promote good for everyone,

appreciate life with wholesome free fun.

Rest by the river and revive

 be thankful you are alive.

the young play all day.

the young play all day.

There are places to swim and hills to climb

to enjoy a view of the sublime.

As an example for you and me

Mother Nature’s gifts are free

for all to savour and enjoy

 not abuse, plunder and destroy.

I try to control thoughts of greed

and only take what I need.

Banish anger, hatred and fear from my mind

and replace them with what is good and kind.

I try to understand and learn all I can

to become a better man.

Buddha statue, ruins of Ayuttaya Thailand.

I am on the Buddha’s path, you should know,

and think it is the way to go.

Many paths lead up to an inspiring view,

select carefully the  one that suits you.

There are many that know

but never go.

Confucis

Confucius

Tell him his dreaming.

Could this be Lau Tzu?

Could this be Lau Tzu?

Had I accepted Gabriel’s challenge, what beliefs would I have promoted? The Way that can be explained is not the true Way. Call it what you may it will not respond to words the unnameable only reacts to actions. The Toa, translates to The Way in English, to me Toa is the closest understanding of the almighty that keeps the whole cosmos in equilibrium. I think of it as synonymous with nature and its laws.

My reminder to stay on The Path.

My reminder to stay on The Path.

To Hindus Brahmin is the unchanging reality in the world and beyond the world and is also difficult to exactly define. This one god can appear in any form, this accounts for the vast array of strange and colourful Hindu gods. Hinduism is a complex conglomeration of many different beliefs.

Another reminder to keep direction.

Another reminder to keep direction.

Jews, Christians and Muslims beliefs all have the same origin, Abraham. They prefer to call their same eternal, omnipotent, omniscient, creator of the universe, by different names. Jehovah Latin for Yahweh is the Hebrew word. The Christians have a trinity, one god in three persons, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Muslims reject the idea of a trinity, there is but one god they are emphatic on this point. Allah is the absolute with both Shiite and Sunni Muslims. These three religions have split into countless denominations each one claiming to be the authentic interpretation of God’s word. There has been nothing but drama since Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. There is even disagreement over what variety of fruit was eaten.

Natures garden.

Natures garden.

I do not want to get involved; the supernatural is incomprehensible to me. I realize I may not be as intelligent as others so am prepared to respect their views. I hope they can be reciprocal towards me. We should treat others as we would like to be treated. The meaning in that cliché has been attributed to many different wise men by his followers.

The sun flower..

The sun flower..

This is why a dream or for real I would not have wanted to be another prophet endeavouring to correct the sinners that are wrecking paradise. The site of the Garden of Eden, Iraq, is now a total disaster area. Israel has seen centuries of bloodshed by people who should know better. Their God commands no killing. There may be a grey area with the Islamic Jihad but if one stirs up an ant’s nest they must expect to get bitten. I would have only added to turmoil trying to rectify an impossible situation.

Stay calm everything passees.

Stay calm everything passes.

Under the threat of disobeying the wishes of a loving God, in the knowledge he is also a wrathful God. I may have put forward an amendment to the Ten Commandments. Promoting something like Buddha’s Eight Fold Path and explained the ideas of Lau Tzu of Wue and Yin and Yang and the pecking order system, promoting respect, similar to Confucius Not forgetting the children with the Pinocchio song “Give a little whistle.”

A real butterfly.

A real butterfly.

Dreaming of walking in a garden picking a flower and waking up with that flower in my hand can never happen in reality. Unless I was to believe in the supernatural, then anything is possible. I would like to believe I had an all-powerful ally to protect me as I did when I was a child. But we grow up and realize Santa Clause would not fit down our chimney even if he were real. Facing up to reality no Tooth Fairy we can live with, or live without, as long as we live. There are some things we are told by people we respect that may be too hard to grow out of.

Fairy treasure.

It would be nice to believe in fairies , I had to use Photoshop to get this one.

The episode with Gabriel was a dream and in the light of day I know the truth. I am not a butterfly dreaming he is a man. All those ideas are fantasy. We need to mature and take responsibility by systematically improving our thinking and ethical accountability. Ignorance, thoughtlessness, selfishness and greed will destroy our future happiness. Joy is to be found in understanding caring and kindness is our salvation. No one can do this for you, grow-up improve, follow a proven path to enlightenment.

Watch your step and keep to the path.

Watch your step and keep to the path.

Pauline and June’s bread.

Food for Thought.

Staff of Life.

Staff of Life.

The smell of baking bread wafting on the morning air as you pass by a bakery is a delight to the nose. To the eye the delight of warm natural golden brown bread remind us of the corn or wheat fields. Then there is the pleasure of eating bread. The feel of the crunchy crust the ears can tune in on this and the texture is a delight as the taste buds go to work. Bread feeds all the senses. It is no wonder it is mentioned in The Lord’s Prayer.

Bakery shelf.

Bakery shelf.

Give us our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses. I do not think it is that easy. As the saying goes, “There are no free lunches” I believe one needs to put in a bit more effort than praying. Practicing the steps in the Buddha’s Eight Fold Path is more practical. Eight self-imposed ethical rules that if followed lead to peace and understanding.

First step.

First step.

The first step is right understanding, realizing all things in life are constantly changing. All material things, no matter how we try to preserve them, deteriorate and relationships are also subject to change and bring sorrow. Aware of these facts one realizes wanting and clinging are not the way to happiness, caring and sharing brings joy, where as greedily wanting and clinging brings grief.

Healthy food.

Healthy food.

Prayer has not saved religious people in the Middle East the ground has been soaked in their blood. Ever since the Garden of Eden there has been sin and intrigue.  These people all believe in the one supreme, omnipotent, know all God. The Jews, Christians and Muslims have been in a frenzy plotting and killing in his name. These are the very things their perfect God commands they refrain from.

Peaceful Sanders Beach Qld.

Peacefully follow the religion of your choice and allow others the same privilege. Read other ideas and incorporate what is good for promoting peace in our world into your beliefs. By taking responsibility for your actions and working to become a worthy person, that can be trusted to stand by his word and show kindness to others will not distract from your sacred beliefs.

Our wonderful land.

Our wonderful land.

We have a wonderful world if we show our appreciation by sharing and harmlessly enjoying its wonders. Whoever or whatever created this world will respond with kindness. Appreciation as opposed to destruction is the way to happiness. A prayer will do no harm but your actions are more important. Pray with your hands together and pick apples with both hands and see which fills your basket.

Savour your food to appreciate.

Savour your food to appreciate.

All food should be savoured, appreciated and given the time needed to allow for its enjoyment. Nothing can be fully enjoyed in a hurry try slowing the greedy haste in life and find more enjoyment. Live in the moment, enjoy the now and stop hurrying to some future pleasure that may only bring disappointment. The most important thing is what you are doing now. The most important person in the world is the one you are with now. Give what you are experiencing in the now your full attention.

Beautiful creatures.

Beautiful creatures.

No one can be forced to believe a religion especially when it has a track record of violence. If you want to convert people to your religion it is advisable to understand their beliefs first and know the history and many branches of your own religion. Then set a good example for them to follow. Do not make bread or wine something it is not and do not only pray for the hungry they need something more sustaining like real crisp crunchy wholesome bread.

Understanding.

Alone with natune

Alone with nature.

Have I reached the point of right understanding? Right understanding is the first step on Buddha’s “The Eightfold Path”. I have become aware through studying the teachings of wise sages, philosophers and modern authorities on these matters. Now, answers are becoming clearer, the fog is lifting; a clear view of the mountain top is in sight. Or is this thought the ego crying out for attention? Realize the mind is vast, everything can be imagined in our mind. Like the tiny dewdrop can reflect all in its midst our tiny mind can see infinity. What we see in our mind is not reality; it is our minds interpretation of what surrounds us in reality.

A dew-drop on hyacinth.

A dew-drop on hyacinth.

Constantly reading and discussing spiritual matters can leave an impression on the mind. Unlike a foot print in mud that is a physical reaction to pressure. The imprint on our mind is caused by words that are an abstract representation of reality. What is seen is our interpretation, of what is there and is based on our past experiences from our personal view-point.  The human mind likes to cling to what is pleasing and reject facts that are unfavorable. Consequently we have many myths that promote reincarnation or life after death in a promised paradise. Which myth appeals to you?

This flower lasts only one day.

This flower lasts only one day.

Followers of myths like to call them by other names such as belief, creed or religion. I have faith that my hypothesis is correct, as other believers have in their faith, although I would not argue or go to war on behalf of my beliefs. Religions and philosophies, regardless of their unfathomable parts, all have useful ethical guide lines one can follow to develop honesty, kindness and compassion. That brings with it joy and contentment, of a quality, that money cannot buy. I respect all spiritually devoted people and admire their art and architecture inspired by their belief. To sit in any sacred sanctuary, with a respectful unbiased attitude for your fellow-men, is a pleasure that the narrow-minded miss out on.

Pottery is easily broben.

Pottery is easily broken.

Part of “Right Understanding “is the realization that all things in life are subject to change. It is a universal truth, that all things in life are impermanent. Knowing this truth we then realize the futility of hording and clinging to impermanent things. With this understanding craving for impermanent things becomes less important. Knowing pleasures pass as well as disagreeable pain and suffering helps foster equanimity. Understanding the ego, the I, that always wants everything to be in its favor, is another cause of suffering. There are steps on the Buddha’s “Eight Fold Path” that helps tone down desire. The wanting drive that is the cause of much unhappiness in our lives. With right understanding it is realized that, in this life, both good and bad karma do bring like reactions.

Forming pot on wheel.

Forming pot on wheel.

I have not reached enlightenment. But I do have enough understanding to know the problems in this world will persist as long as people are intolerant of other people’s beliefs. Intolerance must be replaced with reciprocity. Hatred exchanged with kindness, if not love, misunderstanding being replaced by understanding. To understanding another’s views we must keep an open mind and listen to try to understand. Not listening to find faults and argue but to learn and see the other point of view. If you can keep an open mind you will learn, there are many things you can agree on. You may find some people will never see things as you do. This does not give you the right to condemn them as this would be arrogance on your part.

Peace of early morning.

Peace of early morning.

My ideas are formed but are still like unfired clay. When and if, I am satisfied with the pot I have formed on the wheel I will place it in the kiln. If you have fired your pot congratulations, I will not attempt to change it, to my liking, as it would only shatter it spoiling it completely.

To appreciate is to acknolidge.

To appreciate is to acknowledge.

 The Facts.

Can you understand this writing.

It is difficult to write our thoughts and convey the ideas we have in our mind. It is even harder to find the right words when speaking. Without time to think we comment on subjects that we have no firsthand knowledge of. We often accept things we read or hear without a thought as to the origin. Then confidently repeat something totally ignorant of the validity of what we are saying. When someone disagrees with us the ego wants to step in and argue. I have said and argued without thinking many times and have to be mindful when socializing or I still fall into this trap. Once something is said unlike the written word there is no deleting or erasing, no second thoughts.

See no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil.

Four of the steps on the Buddha’s Eight Fold Path are, Right understanding. Right thoughts and Right speech, steps we have to be mindful of, or fall into this trap. Right mindfulness is another important step on the path to enlightenment. The distractions of life make it so easy to stray from the path.

One of the many Buddha statues in Thailand.

Life can be fully enjoyed when we realize the true nature of things. One of the things we must be aware of is all things are subject to change. The beautiful flower soon withers and becomes compost to nourish new life. Picking and clinging to the flower will not change natures plan, it is beyond our control and to fight this only brings us pain. This is the nature of things, we must cooperate.

To love anything is a joy, but to cling to love is a mistake. The people we love are capable of hurting us the most, when we are separated from them we worry or miss them, there is always this down side to life. Our children grow up; we must let them go as we do not own them. In fact we do not own anything it is all on loan, when, like the flower, our life is over, we will become food for new life. Are you thinking Jack is full of what is good for the garden?

Hear no evil, do no evil, speak no evil, see no evil.

We can have all the joy, happiness and pleasure and less unhappiness when we realize there is a price to pay for everything and it is not in dollar bills we pay, it is in good deeds, kindness and compassion. Life is a garden; whatever you put into it is what you will get out of it. Wanting all those material things will not bring contentment, they only bring a fleeting happiness, then the realization of their downside, they need maintenance, storage, they chip, dent, wear out, need I go on. We do not want all the down side, all the problems, and try to avoid them. Life is one thing after another, we are always wanting or avoiding, running to or from, never contented.

Monkey business, you can’t win them all.

Pleasures lift you up and then they drop you down, the higher you go, the further you fall. Calm is not very exciting, actually boring to youth, they still, usually, have the resilience to rebound. What a dull world without that youthful, exuberant energy. As the joints lose their flexibility and spring we like tranquility. The old need to make some allowance for youth and remember when they were young. The young have no personal experience of the ravages of time on the human body. Actually they have not had much experience at all and what experience they have had is unlike previous generations. So pleasure is a youthful thing.

A pleasure to see.

Happiness, we all like to be happy, we strive to be happy, and we work and toil to be happy. Ironically, chasing after happiness, we miss the happiness now. Happiness has to be experienced in the now. If you are happy in your occupation you will never have to toil. Work is a joy if we regard it in the right way, by taking a pride in what we are doing and not rushing to finish it to do something else.

Marvelous, every leaf the same.

To provide your needs, find a job that will promote good and benefit all. Do it to the best of your ability, it will bring you rewards that money cannot buy, satisfaction, respect, trust and friends. Happiness depends on the now and the circumstances prevailing, sometimes things are beyond our control and happiness will not always happen. Happiness is more reliant on the outside. Contentment is a state of mind even when adversity challenges us we can overcome it with the right attitude.

To lose something we value is bad but not to accept the loss and fret about it is only compounding the pain. We can be in pain but we do not have to suffer.

Another of natures perfect pattern.

Contentment is the greatest happiness. Health is the greatest wealth. Love is the greatest conqueror. Understanding is the greatest.

Tan’s ice sculpture.

The Buddha gave us fundamental principles to live by in the                Noble Eight Fold Path. They are Right understanding; R/ thoughts; R/Speech; R/actions, R/livelihood; R/effort; R/mindfulness &   R/ concentration. To put this into practice we need to know just what is meant by all these Right things he mentioned & knowing is not enough these principals have to be practiced. Every day we need to be aware or mindful of our thoughts, speech & actions. This is not easy it takes effort, perseverance & concentration; we will be distracted, falter, forget & make mistakes.  Life is about learning skills to improve things & what better improvement than to improve our self to be calm contented & live in harmony with the world & all its inhabitants.                                                                            Right understanding is to realise all things are subject to change. So to crave & cling to impermanent things will only cause us anguish. Life is passing all is in flux. We cannot change the inevitable we must accept the universal truths & natural laws. The river runs to the ocean & we will have difficulty unless we go with the flow. Knowing this we can appreciate & share the good fortune & cope with adversity knowing that it will pass.  Right thoughts: What we think controls our mood & our outlook on life. If we are aware or mindful of our thoughts we can wisely monitor our thinking & take more control of our life. Our thoughts shape our personality the thoughts we dwell on make us what we are.

Right Speech: The wise know the truth is essential eventually a liar gets found out then trust & credibility is lost. Be mindful & consider before making a comment, what effect will it have, will it help the situation or am I qualified to comment on this subject. Are people interested in my opinion or am I boring them, is my voice disturbing in tone or volume? If what we have to say has no useful purpose then silence is preferable. These are right thoughts to have before airing our views. After all this considering & thinking the opportunity to give our opinion may have passed but no comment is better than foolish remarks we could regret. Sometimes the mouth can run away without the brain.

Right actions are mindful, when you wash dishes are you washing dishes, or trying to get them clean so you can do something else, then you are not mindful. When you eat savour the foods do not gorge consider all your actions carefully. Except in an emergency, circumstances where alert prompt action is essential. Although fear can sometimes lead to wrong decisions, there is a danger in taking action when under strong emotions such as fear, pride, impatience & especially anger. Anger is like temporary insanity.                                                                                               If the occupation we choose to earn a living is something we enjoy work is not drudgery. That is a good thing to remember when deciding on a profession. Right Livelihood involves more than this, others have to be considered besides ones self. The work we do should promote good and do no harm to any sentient being. Every step on The Eight Fold Noble Path complements the other, Right Effort needs Right Thought, Right Mindfulness, and Right Actions, consider how our actions affect others.  A calm mind is necessary to advance on The Eight Fold Path.

Work at its best.

In the modern world there are so many options, in every aspect of this technological world, where everything is clamouring for attention.        We need to stop and calm down to let our thoughts settle. Meditation is needed to achieve a calm mind. Right Concentration, controlling the thoughts that are stirring our mind. Till you try to sit in meditation and concentrate on one single thing, such as counting the inhalation and exhaling of your breath, you may not realise how your thoughts are racing. Once you have learned how to still your mind and get your thoughts under control. You can use the time you would normally be impatiently waiting for an appointment or any dreary wait, to calm your mind and let the world catch up to you. Also to take a few deep breaths can ease pain, control nerves and trigger calmness in stressful situations. In short. Be mindful and the most important thing is, what we are doing now. Give it our best shot, try to stay on target, give it a go make it our life’s aim to do our best and not stray off the righteous path. It’s not a command it’s a challenge a commitment for life that can benefits all.
