Slow down don’t slow up.

Lately I have been absorbed reading instead of writing. The books I have been reading have made me realise how little I know. And yet I am far more knowledgeable than I used to be, at least I now know how to enjoy life.

Knowing the unsatisfactory changing nature of life. I do not cling to things and am contented rather than happy. My lifelong goal is self improvement, acquiring knowledge rather than possessions.

I gave my copy away I went to the library revise.

I would describe this as contentment rather than happiness. Learning to appreciation the good in my life.

Ignorance is the cause of unhappiness. To enjoy life one must be disciplined in doing what is necessary to stay healthy in both body and mind. The one thing we should not be ignorant of is nothing lasts. Everything has a use by date.

We can prolong the life of things by maintaining them properly, then they will serve us well. To care for things we need the knowledge to know how. Over the years I have learned a few life skills.

I try to pass them on, but you can find better qualified writers than me. You just need to be very selective in sorting out whose opinion to follow. Is it fact or fiction, is it rubbish I am feeding my mind on? Both body and mind need wholesome nourishment to stay healthy.

I am pleased how I am doing, keeping fit and inspiring others. They made me ‘member of the month’ at the Burleigh, World Gym. I was requested to write this comment. I now am fitted out in really smart gym cloths all part of the honour.

Great game for a young bloke to earn a crust. Plenty of exercise climbing up on the steel purlins, riding the crane hook. Man those were the days before the safety regulations took all the buzz out of it.

The problem is if you do a good job they promote you. Most of the fun goes out of it and it can get stressful.

The way around that is go to a gym and get rid of the stress. Get the endorphin circulating, it is better than chocolate. Oh! You see eye candy everywhere in a gym, a treat for every taste, the blokes and the girls. The great people that you become friends with in a gym like World Gym, Burleigh, is another incentive to workout.

I am 83 but when I am mixing in with all these positive, fit people I can forget I am past my use by date. Three score and ten I never put too much faith in ancient writing and doctors are ok in an emergency but do not leave it up to them to keep you fit. You are better of at the gym.

Habitual walking is not as Thich Nhat Hanh, in his beautifully written book “Peace is Every Step.“ describes walking. What he describes is actually walking meditation. If you are an active person you may prefer this rather than sitting.

Some habits are not wise.

Some habits are not wise when you are not so sure-footed.

Mindful walking is a cognitive process you are conscious and aware. If we repeat anything often enough it becomes a habit. This is very useful it enables us to become skilled operators. As long as we do not get too inattentive and become prone to problems.

Habitual actions describe how we fly through life in a fog. We do not actually see where we are going we are traveling on auto pilot. Our thoughts are on some thing in the future or past, not focused on what we are doing.  Meditation teaches us how to stay focused. Those thoughtless actions are the cause of pain and suffering.

The Buddha Siddhartha Gautama said the first step on The Eight Fold Path is Understanding, next is right thinking the next that automatically follows is right actions. Then he discusses right occupation The Buddha is only interested in getting you into a good job. By good he means harmless and beneficial.

You may be more interested in getting a well-paid occupation. I would also advise doing what you enjoy to earn an honest crust. Then making dough is a pleasure. People often say what line of work are you in. They used to say out on the construction site, “What’s your game, mate?” Back then, in the good old days, before tight safety regulations took the virtuosity out of it. I would say, “I am a rigger.” I loved my high position looking down on everyone. I was a young show off and got my thrills riding on the crane hook.

The young extroverts today (I dare not call then show-offs) have to hoon-around to get a buzz. Putting the public in danger and they do not get paid for it. Instead it costs them, for petrol their motorbike or car and on top of that they get fined.

Well I suppose they could say, “It is better than walking.”

The next steps to consider are right effort, right concentration and mindfulness, not to stepping off the path. It is human to be unmindful and inevitable to step off the path. When we take a wrong step it is no good placing blame or fretting. Just pick yourself up and try again. The same as you do in meditation when your mind wanders.  You can falter but never fail to try.

Unnecessary baggage is never right.

 Possessions weigh you down and slow your pace.

This is the greatest problem for the human race.

Giving, sharing, relaxing and letting go.

We should practice, that is one thing I know.

Because of baggage and needless fuss.

Do not grasp and cling to life in this way

Experience life’s joy, make it a holiday.

 It does not matter if you walk or go by plane.

It’s the path you choose that makes it joy or pain.

Kindness, caring, hugs and maybe a kiss,

Is the way to fill your life with mostly bliss.

Music, dance, take a chance on romance. Getting in natures flow is the way to go.

 What ever gets you going. Listen to my words. Be up with the birds. Ready to roll go for a stroll. Jump on your bike or go for a hike.

 The sun rises each day with a great display.  The breeze in the trees caresses the birds and the bees.

Mother Nature loves you, if you love her too.

 Ration T V, it is mostly evil you’ll see.

Technology is ok if used in the right way.

But it can be an addiction, a dreadful affliction.

You will stagnate and stay up too late.

Love is for giving, life is for living.

Especially for you.

The greatest thing you will ever learn is to love and to be loved in return.

With  nature’s gifts, your attitude shifts.

The clouds disappear you are glad you are here.

You don’t need drugs whisky or beer.

All you need is the air you breathe.

Food with wonderful flavour, nature provides for you to savour.

I know there is more you can buy at the store.

That is ok if you don’t get carried away.

There is a difference between wanting and needing.

It could just be your ego you are feeding.

It can be tempting  and hard to resist..

Mindful is consciously aware, so you should take care.

To be mindful of the path you are traveling on.

When you’ve spent your money and your time is gone.

You realise hoarding and greed, for all those things you did not need. Were impermanent and passing pleasure, costing you your time and leisure.

No rush just do it.

Then you will know, this was not the way to go.

In past posts I quoted The Buddha as saying all things are subject to change and I advise going with the flow of nature. We cannot deny the fact that all things change and water flows to the lowest place. Now you see me hiking uphill. So was that a lot of hot air? No I am letting off steam to lower the pressure, slow the heart rate and keep me fit. It is not exactly steam it is sweat, as exercise is not easy but it has its rewards.

Hiking up hill, swimming and bike riding are good cardio vascular exercises any thing that gets you puffing is good for the heart and circulation.  Low impact is best like swimming, cycling and the cross trainer in the gym are perfect examples. Start off at a comfortable pace and duration and gradually increase the resistance, cadence and length of time as your fitness improves. Like Yin and Yang a balance is needed. It has to be hard enough to make you puff but not to the point where you are panting and cannot talk. People with heart and health problems need a doctor’s advice on this.

Hatha yoga, Pilates and tai chi are good for flexibility. Again gradually feel your way it is easy to injure muscles by jerky movements or pushing them beyond their limits. Do not hold your breath, breathing is important. Slowly go as far as you can and hold this position for at least ten deep breaths. Do three times it will be easier on the next stretch. This is how to loosen up.  If you have some disability or injury work around it, the rest of your body can be kept supple while the problem part has time to repair.

Weights and resistance exercises are needed to strengthen bones and build muscle. At my age I want low intensity that is light weights and more repetitions. The older one gets the harder it becomes to build muscle, but muscle condition can be improved and strengthened no matter how old. No matter what age or condition you are in, a sensible exercise program is a health benefit. Assuming you are not athletic take it easy. Pick a weight you can easily lift five times and do that three times. In gym jargon that is five reps x three sets. When you find you can do ten reps x three sets. It is time for a slightly heavier weight. This will improve your strength and build muscle.

There are three types of exercise, stretching for flexibility, cardio vascular for the heart, lungs and general fitness and resistance for strength. Exercise combined with a healthy balanced diet is the way to health. Balance the types of food and balance the amount the calories you burn in exercise against your intake of food. It is a complex study getting fit and one must not get fanatical or obsessed worrying too much. As worry creates stress and has adverse effects in every part of the body.

Live an active life doing things you enjoy. Eat slowly savouring wholesome natural foods. Highly processed food often have too much salt or sugar added, artificial colouring and preservatives. Beneficial parts removed and other parts concentrated. Salt, sugar and fat are like drugs, we become addicted to foods containing them and lose our sense of taste. Commercial enterprises are more interested in making a profit than your health. You have to be responsible for your own health.  Do not leave your health to doctors, medicines and pills, they are a last resource.
